About the journal

International Journal of Stem Cells (Int J Stem Cells), a peer-reviewed open access journal, principally aims to provide a forum for investigators in the field of stem cell biology to present their research findings and share their visions and opinions. Int J Stem Cells covers all aspects of stem cell biology including basic, clinical and translational research on genetics, biochemistry, and physiology of various types of stem cells including embryonic, adult and induced stem cells. Reports on epigenetics, genomics, proteomics, metabolomics of stem cells are welcome as well. Int J Stem Cells also publishes review articles, technical reports and treatise on ethical issues.
Articles published in International Journal of Stem Cells are indexed and abstracted in PubMed, PMC, SCOPUS, CAS, and three Clarivate Analytics Databases, Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE), Biological Abstract® and Biosis Previews®.
This journal was supported by the Korean Federation of Science and Technology Societies(KOFST) Grant funded by the Korean Government.
Instructions to Authors
- The Review Process
- All manuscripts submitted to International Journal of Stem Cells are initially evaluated by our editorial team based on the interest and importance of the subject and content, the use of proper scientific methods, the clarity of presentation (including the use of proper English) and the relevance to readers.
- If an article is considered suitable for a peer review, it will be sent out for review by more than 2 experts in the field under the supervision of a member of editorial board.
- The peer-review is carried out in single-blind processes.
- Revised manuscripts may be subject to further peer review if necessary.
- Copyright Transfer and Agreement Form
- The corresponding author must read and sign the statements on Copyright Transfer and Agreement Form.
- The Form is available online (www.ijstemcell.com) and should be faxed to the Editorial Office (Fax: +82 (0)504 050 5377).
- Research and Publication Ethics
This statement aims to provide guidelines regarding the responsibilities of authors who aim to publish in International Journal of Stem Cells (Int J Stem Cells). This statement covers all types of publications including review article, original article, case report, letter to editor, etc. submitted to Int J Stem Cells.
- Research Ethics
All manuscripts should be prepared in strict observation of the research and publication ethics guidelines recommended by the Council of Science Editors (http://www.councilscienceeditors.org/), International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE, http://www.icmje.org/), the World Association of Medical Editors (WAME, http://www.wame.org/), and the Korean Association of Medical Journal Editors (KAMJE, https://www.kamje.or.kr/en/main_en).
- Informed consent and Institutional Review Board approval
The studies on human and animals should indicate that procedures were in accordance with institutional guidelines (i.e. Institutional Review Board and Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee) and be mentioned in the text section of the manuscripts.
- Originality and duplicate publication
All submitted manuscripts should be original and should not be in consideration by other scientific journals for publication. Any part of the accepted manuscript should not be duplicated in any other scientific journal without the permission of the Editorial Board although the figures and tables can be used freely if the original source is verified according to Creative Commons license. It is mandatory for all authors to resolve any copyright issues when citing a figure or data from other journals.
- Procedures with regards to handling research and publication misconducts
When the editorial board has been informed of suspected cases of research and publication misconduct such as a redundant (duplicate) publication, plagiarism, fabricated data, changes in authorship, undisclosed conflicts of interest, ethical problems with the submitted manuscript, appropriation of authors ideas or data by reviewers, complaints against editors, and other issues, the resolving process will follow procedures provided by the Committee on Publication Ethics (http://www.ijstemcell.com/file/Flowchart.pptx). The decision on the cases under consideration is made by the Editorial Board of Int J Stem Cells after a full investigation.
- Format of Manuscripts
- Manuscripts should be original not previously published nor submitted to other journals and must be written in English.

- Preparation for Submission
- Manuscripts should be created in
Microsoft Word format.
- Times New Roman is highly recommended font.
- Use at least 2.5 cm (or 1 inch) margins of all sides and at least 12-pitch type.
- All sections of manuscripts must be double-spaced.
- Number the pages consecutively in the middle portion of the bottom.
- Title page, abstract, text, acknowledgements, potential conflict of interest, references, tables, figures and figure legends should typed on a separate page and follow in that order.
- Do not embed figures in the text.
- Title Page
- Indicate the article type: Original article, Review Article, Technical Report, Brief Report, Letter to the Editor.
- Name(s) of author(s)
- Name(s) of institution(s) of each author
- Correspondence information for Corresponding Author: Name, address, telephone and fax numbers, and e-mail address
- Key words or Phrases
- 1) Four to six key words or phrases, using terms from the most recent Medical Subject Headings of Index Medicus (http://nlm.nih.gov/tsd/serials/lji.html).
- 2) If suitable MeSH terms are not available for recently introduced terms, present terms may be used.
- Abstract
- Abstract is required for Original Article, Review Article, Technical Report, and Brief Report.
- Be concise: No more than 250 words.
- Do not cite references in the abstract.
- Defined acronym or abbreviation on first usage in parentheses.
- Subheadings
- 1) Use following subheadings in Original Articles: Background and Objectives, Methods (Subjects) and Results, and Conclusions.
- 2) Subheadings are not mandatory in Review Articles, Brief Reports, Technical Reports, and Letter to the Editor.
- Text
- Text should be no more than 6,000 words excluding title page, abstract, acknowledgements, potential conflict of interest, references, tables, figures, and legends.
- Typical main headings can be used, such as Introduction, Materials (Subjects) and Methods, Results, and Discussion.
- All references, tables, and figures should be numbered in the order in which they are cited in the text.
- Acronyms, abbreviations, and symbols must be defined on first usage.
- Introduction should include the background and the aims of study.
- Materials (Subjects) and Methods should be described in detail and also include statistical methods.
- Results should be described in proper order with tables and figures.
- Discussion should include the interpretation and the conclusions of study.
- Acknowledgments
- Acknowledgments should specify all sources of funding, institutional or corporate, for the research discussed in the study.
- Acknowledgments include collaborators, technical help, secretarial assistance.
- Potential Conflict of Interest
- Potential Conflict of Interest must be disclosed.
- If there are no potential conflict of interest, please add the following statement: "The authors have no conflicting financial interest."
- References
- Accuracy of reference data is the author's responsibility. Verify all entries against original sources, especially journal titles, inclusive page numbers, publication dates, accents, diacritical marks, and spelling in languages other than English.
- Cite reference selectively: No more than 40
- All authors must be listed: Do not use 'et al.'
- Cite the references using bracketed numbers in the order of appearance in text (example: [1], [2,3], [4-6]).
- Abbreviations of journal names should conform to those in the Index Medicus and on MEDLINE.
- Personal communications, unpublished observations, and submitted manuscripts must be cited in the text as "([name(s)], unpublished data, 200X)."
- Abstracts may be cited only if they are the sole source and must be identified in the references as "Abstract."
- "In press" citations must have been accepted for publication and the name of journal or book publisher included.
- We recommend use of National Library of Medicine (NLM) reference style.

- Tables
- Tables must be titled, numbered, and cited in the text.
- Each table must be typed on a separate sheet and double-spaced.
- Table number should be Arabic, followed by a period and a brief informative title.
- Abbreviation within the table should be explained in a footnote.
- Footnotes: Use superscript lowercase letters within a table (i.e.: a, b, c ---)
- Do not use vertical lines in tables. Use only horizontal lines above and below the column headings and at the bottom of the table only.
- Tables should be created in Microsoft Word table function. Do not place Excel table in a Word document.
- Figures
- Figures must be cited in numerical order in the text (using the Arabic numbers).
- Both black and white figures or color illustrations are acceptable.
- Multi-part/panel figures must be prepared and arranged as a single image file.
- The combined total number of figures and tables should not exceed 8.
- Figures must be uploaded as separate image files.
- For initiation submission, figures can be supplied as any image file formats or pdf file.
- The final versions of figures for publication should be supplied as image file formats including tiff, jpg, or psd files with more than 600 dpi resolution. If saving tiff files, please ensure that the compression option is selected to avoid very large file sizes.
- Color images can be supplied in either RGB or CMYK mode.
- Figures including graphs and illustrations that do not meet these standards and consequently are not reproduced well will delay the publication. We will not publish the article until the problems are satisfactorily resolved.
- Figure legends
- Figure legends must be typed on a separate sheet and double-spaced.
- Figure legends contain a brief title and explanation of the figures.
- The magnification and stain methods used for photomicrographs should be stated.
- Any abbreviations or symbols used in the figures must be defined in the figure legends.
- Style
- Use American-English spelling and minimize the use of nonstandard abbreviations.
- For biochemical abbreviations, use those currently recommended by The Journal of Biological Chemistry in its instructions to authors.
- Italicize genes and loci, and use approved names listed in the appropriate nomenclature database.
- Avoid using multiple names for genes and proteins: Alternative names should be given on first mention only.
- For the special materials and equipments, give the manufacturer's name. Capitalize trade names and indicate registered trademarks. Give the formal, chemical name of a compound as established by the international convention after the first use of trivial name. Thereafter, the trivial name may be used.
- Abbreviate units of measure only when used with numbers. Specify estimates of variance (e.g., SD, SE) and give references for statistical methods.
- Preparation for Review Article
- Review Articles are generally invited by the editorial board.
- Review Article should be no more than 6000 words excluding title page, abstract, acknowledgements, potential conflict of interest, references, tables, figures, and legends.
- A total 6 figures and/or tables are allowed in Review Article.
- Cite reference selectively: No more than 40
- Preparation for Brief Reports and Technical Reports
- Brief Reports and Technical Reports cannot exceed 2000 words excluding title page, abstract, acknowledgements, potential conflict of interest, references, tables, figures, and legends.
- A total 4 figures and/or tables are allowed in Brief Reports and Technical Report
- Cite reference selectively: No more than 20
- Results and Discussion can be combined into one section.
- Preparation for Letters to the Editor
- Letters to the Editor is welcomed to cover the topic in published articles, or it may deal with new issues in stem cell research field.
- Letters should be no more than 600 words.
- A total 2 figures and/or tables are allowed in Letters to the editor.
- Cite reference selectively: No more than 20
- Publication Fee
No publication fees for manuscripts submitted in 2018. For those submitted after January 1st, 2019, US$400 will be charged for publication.
