Manuscript preparation

1. General guidelines

Papers are accepted only in American/British English. Manuscripts could be submitted as research articles, reports, and reviews.

Research Articles (up to 4500 words, including references, notes and captions, or up to 5 printed pages) are expected to present a major advance. Research Articles include an abstract, an introduction, up to six figures or tables, sections with brief subheadings, and about 40 references. More detailed description of Materials and Methods could be included in supporting online material to provide information needed to support the paper's conclusions.

Reports (up to 2500 words including references, notes and captions or up to 3 printed pages) present important research results of significance. Reports should include an abstract, an introductory paragraph, up to four figures and/or tables, and about 30 references. Detailed description of Materials and Methods could be included in supporting online material to provide information needed to support the paper's conclusions. More detailed description of Materials and Methods could be included in supporting online material to provide information needed to support the paper's conclusions.

Reviews (up to 3500 words including references, notes and captions) describe novel developments of interdisciplinary significance and highlight future directions. They include an abstract, an introduction that outlines the main theme, brief subheadings, and an outline of important unresolved questions. A maximum of 40 references is suggested. Most Reviews are solicited by the editors, but unsolicited submissions may also be considered.

Manuscripts should be compiled in the following order: title page; abstract; keywords; main text; acknowledgments; appendixes (as appropriate); references; table(s) with caption(s) (on individual pages); figure caption(s) (as a list).

A short title (50 characters or less) should be used as a running title
Authors choose one of the following 6 sections: Bioinformatics and Systems Biology, Developmental Biology, Ecology and Population Biology, Evolution and Systematic Biology, Medicinal and Cellular Biology, and Neurobiology and Physiology. However, the Editors are responsible for assigning the paper to an appropriate section.
- Abstracts of 250 words are required for all manuscripts. Because 'Animal Cells and Systems' is an interdisciplinary journal, the abstract is to be written in a manner which makes it intelligible to biologists in all fields. Authors should avoid non-standard abbreviations, unfamiliar terms and symbols. References should not be cited in the Abstract.
- Each manuscript should have 3-5 key words.

Section headings should be concise and numbered sequentially, using a decimal system for subsections.

- Descriptions of species should be accompanied by significant information on biogeography, ecology, phylogenetics, or other biological concerns. Papers describing new text should be under the responsibility of three authors at most.

- All the authors of a paper should include their full names, affiliations, postal addresses, telephone and fax numbers and email addresses on the cover page of the manuscript. One author should be identified as the Corresponding Author.

- For all manuscripts non-discriminatory language is mandatory. Sexist or racist terms should not be used.

- Authors must adhere to SI units. Units are not italicised.
When using a word which is or is asserted to be a proprietary term or trade mark, authors must use the symbol ® or TM.

2. Style guidelines

Description of the Journal's article style

Description of the Journal's reference style
PLEASE NOTE: If there are several items with the same first author, alone or with co-authors, present items by a single author before items with co-authors, regardless of title. In such a grouping, give the multi-author publications in chronological not alphabetical order by the second author's surname, regardless of the number of authors.

If you have any questions about references or formatting your article, please contact authorqueries@tandf.co.uk (please mention the journal title in your email).

3. Taxonomy

When using scientific names of genus and species for the first time in taxonomic papers, names should be written in full with author(s) and date. Thereafter, the genus can be indicated by its initial letter except at the start of a sentence, but the author and date can be omitted. If a reference is placed immediately after a scientific name, make clear in some way that the reference is not the author of the scientific name: eg, sensu Kim, 1991, or (see Kim, 1991). Telegraphic style is recommended for taxonomic descriptions. When a new species-group taxon is established, its type material should be clearly described. Public museum or herbarium for depositing the type material must be stated.

4. Figures

We welcome figures sent electronically, but care and attention to these guidelines are essential as importing graphics packages can often be problematic.

Figures must be saved individually and separate to text. Please do not embed figures in the paper file.

Avoid the use of colour and tints for purely aesthetic reasons.

Figures should be produced as near to the finished size as possible.

All figures must be numbered in the order in which they appear in the paper (e.g. figure 1, figure 2). In multi-part figures, each part should be labelled (e.g. figure 1(a), figure 1(b)).

Figure captions must be saved separately, as part of the file containing the complete text of the paper, and numbered correspondingly.

The filename for the graphic should be descriptive of the graphic, e.g. Figure1, Figure2a.

Files should be saved as one of the following formats: TIFF (tagged image file format), PostScript or EPS (encapsulated PostScript), and should contain all the necessary font information and the source file of the application (e.g. CorelDraw/Mac, CorelDraw/PC).

Please note that it is in the author’s interest to provide the highest quality figure format possible. Please do not hesitate to contact our Production Department if you have any queries.

5. Colour

There are a limited number of colour pages within the annual page allowance. Authors should restrict their use of colour to situations where it is necessary on scientific, and not merely cosmetic, grounds. Authors of accepted papers who propose publishing figures in colour in the print version should consult Taylor & Francis at proof stage to agree on an appropriate number of colour pages. If the colour page budget is exceeded, authors will be given the option to provide a financial contribution to additional colour reproduction costs. Figures that appear in black-and-white in the print edition of the Journal will appear in colour in the online edition, assuming colour originals are supplied.

6. Reproduction of copyright material

As an author, you are required to secure permission if you want to reproduce any figure, table, or extract from the text of another source. This applies to direct reproduction as well as "derivative reproduction" (where you have created a new figure or table which derives substantially from a copyrighted source). For further information and FAQs, please see http://journalauthors.tandf.co.uk/preparation/permission.asp .  Authors are themselves responsible for the payment of any permission fees required by the copyright owner. Copies of permission letters should be sent with the manuscript upon submission to the Editor(s).

7. Supplementary online material

Authors are welcome to submit animations, movie files, sound files or any additional information for online publication.

Information about supplementary online material

8. Review / Mini-review

Authors wishing to contribute a manuscript to this category should contact the Editor-in-Chief. Reviews should describe current status of a specific research field with a balanced view. No page limit is applied for review manuscripts. Mini-reviews should not contain an exhaustive review of an area, but rather a focused, brief treatment of a contemporary development or issue in a single area. The length of the mini-review should not exceed 6 printed pages.

9. Abbreviations

Abbreviations of measurement units, quantity units, chemical names, and other technical terms in the body of the paper should be used after they are defined clearly in the place they first appear in the text. However, abbreviations that would be recognized by scientists outside the author's field may be used without definition, such as P (probability), SD (standard deviation), SE (standard error), DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid), RNA (ribonucleic acid), ATP (adenosine triphosphate), UV (ultraviolet), and Eco RI (Escherichia coli RY 13).

10. Ethical standards

Authors should describe how any ethical considerations were approached and addressed. Papers describing experiments which demonstrate a lack of concern for current ethical and welfare standards will not be accepted for publication. The decision of the Editorial Board in this respect will be final.

Manuscript submission

All submissions should be made online at the Animal Cells and Systems   ScholarOne Manuscripts site.

Authors should prepare and upload two versions of their manuscript. One should be a complete text, while in the second all document information identifying the author should be removed from files to allow them to be sent anonymously to referees. When uploading files authors will then be able to define the non-anonymous version as “File not for review”.

Revision of Manuscript

If a manuscript is returned to the corresponding author for revision, the reviewed manuscript must be resubmitted within three months of the author's receipt of the Editor-in-Chief's letter. Revised manuscript returned after three months will be regarded as a new submission.

Copyright and authors' rights

It is a condition of publication that authors assign copyright or license the publication rights in their articles, including abstracts, to the Korean Society for Integrative Biology. This enables us to ensure full copyright protection and to disseminate the article, and of course the Journal, to the widest possible readership in print and electronic formats as appropriate. Authors retain many rights under the Taylor & Francis rights policies, which can be found at http://journalauthors.tandf.co.uk/preparation/copyright.asp . Authors are themselves responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyright material from other sources.

Exceptions are made for certain Governments' employees whose policies require that copyright cannot be transferred to other parties. We ask that a signed statement to this effect is submitted when returning proofs for accepted papers.

Reprints

Corresponding authors can receive 50 free reprints and a complimentary copy of the issue containing their article. Free online access to the article through our website, Taylor and Francis Online will be provided to all authors assuming we receive all email addresses. Complimentary reprints are available through Rightslink® and additional reprints can be ordered through Rightslink® when proofs are received. If you have any queries, please contact our reprints department at reprints@tandf.co.uk .
