About the journal

International Journal of Sexual Health

As the official journal of the World Association for Sexual Health, the International Journal of Sexual Health promotes sexual health as a state of physical, emotional, mental, and social well-being through a positive approach to sexuality and sexual rights. The journal publishes peer-reviewed scientific papers, editorials, and reviews, using quantitative and qualitative methods, descriptive and critical analysis, instrument development, surveys, and case studies to examine the essential elements of this broad concept. Leading experts from around the world present original work that covers a variety of disciplines, including sexology, biology, medicine, psychology, sociology, anthropology, history, and religion.

Formerly titled the Journal of Psychology & Human Sexuality , the International Journal of Sexual Health is dedicated to the basic understanding that sexual health is not merely the absence of disease, dysfunction, and infirmity, but also the presence of pleasurable and safe sexual enjoyment and satisfaction, free of coercion, discrimination, and violence. The journal examines sexual attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors, public policies and legislative issues, and a variety of sexual health problems, including the assessment and treatment of sexual dysfunctions and disorders, sexual abuse and violence, and sexually transmitted infections.

Abstracted/indexed in: Abstracts in Anthropology, Academic Search Series, British Journal of Pharmacology Abstracts, CAB International, CINAHL Plus, Crossref, Current Contents®/Social and Behavioral Sciences, Educational Research Abstracts, Family Index Database, GenderWatch, Health and Psychosocial Instruments (HaPI), Journal Citation Reports Social Sciences Edition, Psychinfo, Social Science Citation Index (SSCI); and Studies on Women & Gender Abstracts.

Manuscript Submission: IJSH uses an online submission and review system, ScholarOne, through which authors submit manuscripts and track their progress up until acceptance for publication.  Please log onto http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/wijs for information and instructions regarding registration and manuscript submission.  Authors will enter pertinent information into the system and submit the following files: (a) cover letter file (see description below); (b) title page file that includes the authors’ names, affiliations (institutional and departmental), and addresses, email, fax, and phone numbers of the corresponding author, as well as 4-5 key words (3 key words must be consistent with our list of preferred key words; please consult our guidance on keywords here ) and any acknowledgments (when uploading this file, select the “Title Page and Acknowledgments” File Designation from the drop-down menu); (c) main document file (Word or WordPerfect format [pc compatible], including the abstract, all text, references, footnotes, and appendixes); and (d) figures and tables, which should be submitted as separate files.

Abstracts must be in paragraph form to include the following: Objectives, Methods, Results, and Conclusions.

In addition, please submit a separate document clearly outlining if: (a) the author has any financial conflicts of interest (including sources of funding), (b) if you have approval from your Institutional Review Board for a study involving animal or human patients, and (c) if there are any informed consent notifications to state. Make it clear in the Methods Section (if applicable) how informed consent was obtained and clearly indicate that IRB approval was obtained.

Financial conflicts and/or sources of funding should be indicated at the end of the manuscript before the References titled "Acknowledgments".

Please see: http://journalauthors.tandf.co.uk/preparation/copyright.asp#link3 for more details. Please do not submit PDF files. As part of the submission process, authors will also be asked to provide a suggested running head (an abbreviated title) that should not exceed 50 characters, including spaces.

Because an anonymous peer review system is employed, please ensure that manuscripts have been properly blinded; author names and affiliations and acknowledgements should not appear anywhere in the main document file.  Author names and affiliations are entered in a separate section in the online system for submission of manuscripts.

Please send any inquiries regarding journal policy and manuscript preparation/submission to the Editor (Eli Coleman, PhD at ijsh@umphysicians.umn.edu ).

We encourage submission of original articles, reviews, and brief reports.  We will also accept editorials or brief commentaries.

Original articles should be 20–30 pages in length, including references, but exceptions can be made if there is a reasonable justification. These articles should be robust in their findings and based upon a reasonable and generalizable sample size (depending upon quantitative or qualitative methodology). These articles should be innovative and make significant contributions to our existing knowledge in the field. They should be significant enough to appeal to our broad and international readership and consistent with the Journal’s aim and scope.

Review articles can be of the same length as original articles and should comprehensively review a subject matter in line with the Journal’s aim and scope.

Editorials or commentaries should be relatively short, concise and comment on critical issues within our field.

We also encourage the submission of brief reports. Brief reports can report on important and significant and generalizable work that can be precisely explained in a shorter format. They can also include case studies, relatively small samples, or research conducted in various parts of the world that provide interesting data on specific populations but may not have the generalizability to a wider population, or significance in advancing our scientific knowledge of a particular phenomenon or methodology.  They might also be articles with preliminary data that might point to a potential new direction in research which might require a larger study to reach generalizable conclusions.  The preferred length would be 8 to 12 double-spaced pages (2000 -3000 words), including tables, figures, and references.  Abstracts and references must conform to the style used in major articles.

In titles and cover letters, make it clear what type of article you are submitting.

Each manuscript must be accompanied by a statement that it has not been published elsewhere and that it has not been submitted simultaneously for publication elsewhere. Authors are responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyrighted material from other sources and are required to sign an agreement for the transfer of copyright to the publisher . All accepted manuscripts, artwork, and photographs become the property of the publisher.  All parts of the manuscript should be typewritten, double-spaced, with margins of at least one inch on all sides. Number manuscript pages consecutively throughout the paper. Authors should also supply a shortened version of the title suitable for the running head, not exceeding 50 character spaces. Each article should be summarized in an abstract of not more than 100 words. Avoid abbreviations, diagrams, and reference to the text in the abstract.

References . References, citations, and general style of manuscripts should be prepared in accordance with the APA PublicationManual, 6th ed. Cite in the text by author and date (Smith, 1983) and include an alphabetical list at the end of the article. Examples:
Journal: Tsai, M., & Wagner, N. N. (1978). Therapy groups for women sexually molested as children. Archives of Sexual Behaviour, 7(6), 417–427.
Book: Millman, M. (1980).Such a pretty face. New York: W. W. Norton. Contribution to a Book: Hartley, J. T., & Walsh, D. A. (1980). Contemporary issues in adult development of learning. In L. W. Poon (ed.), Ageing in the 1980s (pp. 239–252). Washington, DC: American Psychological Association.

Illustrations . Illustrations submitted (e.g., line drawings, halftones, photos, photomicrographs, etc.) should be clean originals or digital files. Digital files are recommended for highest quality reproduction and should follow these guidelines:
  • 300 dpi or higher
  • Sized to fit on journal page
  • EPS, TIFF, or PSD format only
  • Submitted as separate files, not embedded in text files

Color Reproduction: Color art will be reproduced in the online production at no additional cost to the author. Color illustrations will also be considered for the print publication; however, the author will bear the full cost involved in color art reproduction. Please note that color reprints can only be ordered if the print reproduction costs are paid. Print Rates: $900 for the first page of color; $450 for the next 3 pages of color. A custom quote will be provided for authors with more than 4 pages of color. Art not supplied at a minimum of 300 dpi will not be considered for print.

Tables and Figures . Tables and figures (illustrations) should not be embedded in the text, but should be included as separate sheets or files. A short descriptive title should appear above each table with a clear legend and any footnotes suitably identified below. All units must be included. Figures should be completely labeled, taking into account necessary size reduction. Captions should be typed and double-spaced on a separate sheet.

Proofs. Page proofs are sent to the designated author using Taylor & Francis’ Central Article Tracking System (CATS). They must be carefully checked and returned within 48 hours of receipt.

Reprints and Issues. Authors from whom we receive a valid email address will be given an opportunity to purchase reprints of individual articles or copies of the complete print issue. These authors will also be given complimentary access to their final article on Taylor & Francis Online .

Open Access. Taylor & Francis Open Select provides authors or their research sponsors and funders with the option of paying a publishing fee and thereby making an article fully and permanently available for free online access – open access – immediately on publication to anyone, anywhere, at any time. This option is made available once an article has been accepted in peer review. Full details of our Open Access program  can be found here.
