About the journal
Mathematical Geosciences (formerly Mathematical Geology) publishes original, high-quality, interdisciplinary papers in geomathematics focusing on quantitative methods and studies of the Earth, its natural resources and the environment. This international publication is the official journal of the IAMG. Mathematical Geosciences is an essential reference for researchers and practitioners of geomathematics who develop and apply quantitative models to earth science and geo-engineering problems.
Renaming the journal as of January 1, 2008 aims to better reflect the content of the journal and meets the growing multi-disciplinary interests and diversity of our readers and contributors.

Instructions to Authors
Manuscript Submission
Papers are accepted for publication in the journal that are concerned with the application and use of mathematics, statistics, and computers in the earth sciences.
Manuscripts should be in English and submitted in triplicate to the Editor−in−Chief:
W. E. Sharp
Department of Geosciences
University of South Carolina, 29208
e−mail: editor@math.geol.sc.edu
Submission is a representation that the manuscript has not been published previously and is not currently under consideration for publication elsewhere. A statement transferring copyright from the authors (or their employers, if they hold the copyright) to the International Association for Mathematical Geology will be required before the manuscript can be accepted for publication. The Editor−in−Chief will supply the necessary forms for this transfer. Such a written transfer of copyright, which previously was assumed to be implicit in the act of submitting a manuscript, is necessary under the U.S. Copyright Law in order for the publisher to carry through the dissemination of research results and reviews as widely and effectively as possible.
Type double−spaced on one side of the paper only, and submit the original and two copies (including copies of all illustrations and figures).
Contributions, General
After a manuscript has been accepted for publication and after all revisions have been incorporated, manuscripts should be submitted to the Editor’s Office as hard copy accompanied by electronic files on disk. Label the disk with identifying information – software, journal name, and first author’s last name. The disk must be the one from which the accompanying manuscript (finalized version) was printed out. The Editor’s Office cannot accept a disk without its accompanying, matching hard−copy manuscript.
All news items, letters to the editor, announcements, etc., to be placed in the journal should be submitted to the Editor−in−Chief.
Other association business should be addressed to the Secretary General

Houston, Texas
77252−2189 USA.
More extensive Instructions to Contributions can be found in Math. Geology, v. 18, no. 8, p. 869–882.
Manuscript Style, General
All papers should be in English. Papers should be no longer than 5000 words; papers of less than 1500 words may be considered as Short Notes.
Title Page
A title page is to be provided and should include the title of the article, author’s name (no degrees), author’s affiliation, and suggested running head. The affiliation should comprise the department, institution (usually university or company), city, and state (or nation) and should be typed as a footnote to the author’s name. The suggested running head should be less than 80 characters (including spaces) and should comprise the article title or an abbreviated version thereof. For office purposes, the title page should include the complete mailing addresses, telephone number, fax number, and e−mail address of the one author designated to review proofs.
Abstract
An informative abstract is to be provided, preferably no longer than 300 words; Short Notes do not require an abstract.
Key Words
A list of 3–6 key words is to be provided directly below the abstract. Key words should express the precise content of the manuscript, as they are used for indexing purposes; key words should not duplicate words in the title.
Illustrations
Illustrations are to be numbered consecutively. Captions for illustrations should be typed on a separate sheet of paper. Photographs should be glossy prints showing good contrast. Either original drawings or good−quality photographic prints are acceptable. All symbols are to be explained; maps must have a scale. Weights and measures should be expressed in the metric system. All illustrations are to be identified on the back with the author’s name and number of the illustration.
Tables
Tables should be numbered consecutively and referred to by number in the text. Each table should be typed on a separate sheet of paper.
References
List references alphabetically at the end of the paper and refer to them in the text by name and year in parentheses. Where four or more authors are involved, only the first author’s name is given in the text, followed by the phrase "and others." References must be complete, including the names of all authors, title of paper, volume and issue number of journal or bulletin, and page range or total pages.
Page Charges
The journal makes no page charges. Reprints are available to authors, and order forms with the current price schedule are sent with proofs.
Springer Open Choice
Springer Open Choice. In addition to the normal publication process (whereby an article is submitted to the journal and access to that article is granted to customers who have purchased a subscription), Springer now provides an alternative publishing option: Springer Open Choice. A Springer Open Choice article receives all the benefits of a regular subscription−based article, but in addition is made available publicly through Springers online platform SpringerLink. To publish via Springer Open Choice, upon acceptance please visit the link below to complete the relevant order form and provide the required payment information. Payment must be received in full before publication or articles will publish as regular subscription−model articles. We regret that Springer Open Choice cannot be ordered for published articles.
