About the journal
Medical Molecular Morphology is an international forum for researchers in both basic and clinical medicine to present and discuss new research on the structural mechanisms and the processes of health and disease at the molecular level. The structures of molecules, organelles, cells, tissues, and organs determine their normal function. Disease is thus best understood in terms of structural changes in these different levels of biological organization, especially in molecules and molecular interactions as well as the cellular localization of chemical components. Medical Molecular Morphology welcomes articles on basic or clinical research in the fields of cell biology, molecular biology, and medical, veterinary, and dental sciences using techniques for structural research such as electron microscopy, confocal laser scanning microscopy, enzyme histochemistry, immunohistochemistry, radioautography, X-ray microanalysis, and in situ hybridization.
Manuscripts submitted for publication must contain a statement to the effect that all human studies have been reviewed by the appropriate ethics committee and have therefore been performed in accordance with the ethical standards laid down in an appropriate version of the 1964 Declaration of Helsinki. It should also be stated clearly in the text that all persons gave their informed consent prior to their inclusion in the study. Details that might disclose the identity of the subjects under study should be omitted.
Reports of animal experiments must state that the "Principles of laboratory animal care"(NIH publication No. 86-23, revised 1985) were followed.
The Editor-in-Chief reserves the right to reject manuscripts that do not comply with the above-mentioned requirements. The author will be held responsible for false statements or for failure to fulfil the above-mentioned requirements.

Instructions to Authors
Manuscript submission
Manuscripts for publication and all correspondence should be sent to:
The Editorial Office of "Medical Molecular Morphology", c/o Japanese Society for Clinical Molecular Morphology, Kinki Region Invention Center Bldg. 14 YoshidaKawara-machi, Sakyo-ku, Kyoto 606-8305, Japan. Tel.: +81-75-771-1373, Fax: +81-75-771-1510 e-mail: mmm@chijin.co.jp
Prerequisites for publication
A copy of the certification form included in each issue must be submitted with the manuscript. The editorial board decides whether to accept or reject submitted papers in consultation with at least two referees.
Types of articles
"Medical Molecular Morphology" welcomes articles on basic or clinical research in the fields of cell biology, molecular biology, and medical, veterinary, and dental sciences using techniques for structural research such as electron microscopy, confocal laser scanning microscopes, enzyme histochemistry, immunohistochemistry, radioautography, Xray microanalysis, and in situ hybridization.
Articles may be in the form of original papers, reviews, short reports, or letters. The maximum length for each type of article is 10, 15, 5, and 1 printed pages, respectively.
Original papers include reports of cases. Short reports include technical notes and preliminary reports. See the page containing the certification form for details of printing charges.
Manuscript form
Two complete hard copies of manuscripts, including tables and figures, must be supplied; the abstract, text, references, tables, and figure legends must be typed double-space with wide margins on one side of good-quality A4 paper. A complete list of submitted materials must accompany each manuscript. Incomplete or improperly prepared manuscripts will be returned to the authors without review.
A separate title page should be provided. The abstract, text, acknowledgments, references, tables, legends, and figures should begin on separate sheets and follow in that order. Standard abbreviations and units should be used. Abbreviations should be defined at first appearance, and their use in the title and abstract should be avoided.
Generic names of drugs and chemicals should be used.
All manuscripts must be written in English. Authors who are not fluent in English must seek the assistance of a colleague who is a native English speaker and is familiar with the field of the work. Manuscripts that have been extensively modified in the editorial process will be returned to the authors for retyping.
Manuscripts in electronic form
While submitting papers, please send an electronic version of the manuscript including tables, figure legends and figures. Manuscripts, including tables and figure legends should be supplied in MS Word format. Figures, for vector graphics, the preferred format is EPS; for halftones, please use TIFF format. MS Offifice figures are also acceptable. For details, please see http://www.springer.jp/author/journal/guidelines.php (Japanese) or http://www.springer.com/authors/manuscript+guidelines?SGWID=0-40162-12-331200-0(English).
Files should be sent on CD or USB, or by e-mail.
Title page
Titles should be brief, specific, and informative. Include the full names of authors; academic affiliation; address to which proofs are to be sent, including a fax number, telephone number, and e-mail address; and 5–7 key words or phrases for indexing. Key words in the title should be included.
Abstract
A concise description (not more than 200 words) of the purpose, methods, results, and conclusions is required.
Text
The text of experimental articles should be divided into the following sections: introduction, materials and methods, results, discussion, and conclusion.
References
Number references consecutively in the order cited in the text, not alphabetically. The accuracy of reference data is the authors’ responsibility. Personal communications and unpublished data should not be included in the reference list but may be cited in parentheses in the text. If such a citation is from someone other than the authors, a letter should be submitted in which the direct quotation is given with the signature of its author. In the reference list, provide inclusive page numbers for all references and give the names of all authors (the use of “et al.” is unacceptable). Journal titles should be abbreviated according to Index Medicus.
References should be cited using superscript numbers, e.g., Abdelatif et al., 1 Matsuda
and Ichida, 2 and Morson. 3
Tables
Should be cited in the text. Each table should be given a number and a brief informative title and should appear on a separate page. Explain in footnotes all abbreviations used.
Figures
Should be used with discretion and are justified only if they clarify or reduce the text required. Information given in captions should not be repeated in the text. Previously published illustrations usually are not accepted.
Figures should be cited in the text and should be numbered sequentially with arabic numerals. A brief descriptive legend should be provided for each figure; legends are part of the text and should be appended to it on a separate page. The top of the figure, the author’s name, and the figure number should be indicated lightly in soft pencil on the back of each figure. Each of the two manuscript copies should include a copy of each figure; two photographs (not photocopies of photographs) must be supplied.
The figures should match the size of either the column width (8.6cm) or the printing area (17.6 × 23.6cm). Related figures should be grouped into a plate on one page (17.6 × 23.6 cm). If plates are submitted, the figure numbers should appear on the artwork.
In electron micrographs, a bar should be used as a size reference, with the length of the bar indicated in the figure legend. In optical micrographs, a magnification factor given in the legend is acceptable.
Color illustrations will be accepted; however, the author will be expected to make a contribution to the extra cost (¥110000 for the first color page and ¥60000 for each
additional color page).
Line drawings
Should be good-quality glossy prints in the desired final size. The inscriptions should be clearly legible. Computer drawings are acceptable provided their quality is comparable to that of line drawings. Computer-drawn curves and lines must be smooth. Letters (capitals) 2mm high are recommended.
Halftone illustrations
Should be well-contrasted photographic prints (not photocopies), trimmed at right angles and in the desired final size. Inscriptions should be about 3mm high.
If reduction is absolutely necessary, please state the alternative scale desired. The publisher reserves the right to reduce or enlarge illustrations.
Offprints
Offprints of each paper are available in lots of 50. To order these, fill out the form enclosed with the proofs.
