About the journal

Critical Studies in Education

Critical Studies in Education is one of the few international journals solely devoted to a critical sociology of education. Two interests frame the journal’s critical approach to research: (1) who benefits (and who doesn’t) from current social arrangements in education and, (2) from the standpoint of the least advantaged, what can be done about inequitable arrangements. Informed by this approach, articles published in the journal draw on post-structural, feminist, postcolonial and other critical orientations to critique education systems and to identify alternatives for education policy, practice and research.

The journal welcomes submissions of the highest quality and importance, which make original theoretical and/or empirical contributions, and are aimed at moving the field forward. Submissions may be focused on education policy and/or practice (including pedagogy) across formal education contexts (e.g. schooling, vocational and further education, higher education) as well as informal settings (e.g. television, communities, the internet). Submissions typically focus on power relations associated with gender, class (/poverty), ethnicity and the reproduction of disadvantage.

Critical Studies in Education is abstracted & indexed in:
A P A I S: Australian Public Affairs Information Service (Online Edition), Australian Education Index (Online), Cabell's , Database of Research on International Education, EBSCOhost, Education Research Index, ERIC , Periodicals Index Online and Swets Information Services.

Instructions to Authors

The Journal only accepts for review manuscripts of between 6,000 and 9,000 words.

All submissions should be made online at the Critical Studies in Education ScholarOne Manuscripts site . New users should first create an account. Once a user is logged onto the site submissions should be made via the Author Centre. Online user guides and access to a helpdesk are available on this website.

Authors should prepare and upload an anonymised version of their manuscript in Word. The document should include the manuscript title, the word count of the manuscript (including references and any endnotes), an abstract (200 words), and the manuscript text (of between 6,000 and 9,000 words), including references. Pages should be numbered and text should be double-spaced.

Manuscripts submitted should be original, not under review by any other publication and not published elsewhere.

In writing your paper you are encouraged to peruse articles in the area you are addressing, which have been previously published in the journal and, where you feel appropriate, to reference them. This will enhance context, coherence and continuity for our readers.

Please note that Critical Studies in Education uses CrossCheck™ software to screen papers for unoriginal material. By submitting your paper to Critical Studies in Education  you are agreeing to any necessary originality checks your paper may have to undergo during the peer review and production processes.

Refereeing

Critical Studies in Education is a double-blind peer-reviewed journal. All submissions undergo rigorous peer review, involving initial editor screening and then review by at least two anonymous referees. Please note that the refereeing process normally takes 4 to 6 weeks, although unavoidable delays sometimes may be experienced. To allow for anonymous refereeing, do not include any text in your submission (including in its headers, footers, endnotes and references) that would indicate the manuscript’s authorship. For example, if referencing your own previously published work and the text indicates that it is your work, replace your name with AAA (or similar). This can be reversed after the refereeing process is completed.

Journal style

Submitted manuscripts should conform with the Journal’s critical approach and with the style of published manuscripts, which avoids the separation of findings and discussion. Authors should be aware that they are addressing an international audience. They should avoid the use of terms that might be meaningful only to a local or national audience, or should provide a clear explanation where this is unavoidable.

Sponsorship

Sponsorship of research reported (e.g. by national research councils, government departments and agencies) should be declared (at least in an endnote).

Tables and Figures

Tables and figures must each be provided in a separate file and not included as part of the text. The approximate position of tables and figures should be indicated in the manuscript.

Figures should be supplied in finished form, suitable for reproduction and as near to the finished size as possible. Avoid the use of colour and tints; figures will normally be reproduced in black and white. Subtle variations in grey tones should also be avoided. Strong contrasts such as black/white and cross-hatched patterns give a better printed result.

Images should be supplied in TIFF, PostScript, EPS or JPEG at a minimum resolution of 300 dpi.
