Instructions to Authors
Guide for Authors

Author Information

Note to authors submitting manuscripts to JPRAS: Failure to follow our instructions to authors on preparing manuscripts will adversely affect time to publication and may influence the decision to accept or reject the manuscript. It is strongly advised that you follow very carefully the instructions that follow and that you use the checklist at the end of the instructions and submit this check list with your manuscript. The same list can be found on the web at www.bjps.com.

The Journal of Plastic, Reconstructive & Aesthetic Surgery is the official Journal of the British Association of Plastic Surgeons. Its object is to publish original articles about developments in all areas related to plastic and reconstructive surgery and to provide a forum for correspondence and discussion. Significant papers on any aspect of plastic surgery are invited for publication. These include operative procedures with an emphasis on outcome, technical innovations, clinical or laboratory research, case reports and letters to the Editor. Review articles are welcome, but write to the Editor with details of the proposed article before submitting it.

Original contributions are welcomed from any country. The authors do not have to be members of the British Association of Plastic Surgeons but the prose used in manuscripts must conform to acceptable English usage. The text must be clear, logical and concise. In assessing a manuscript for publication the Editor will also consider its originality, educational value and validity.

The results of human and/or animal studies will only be accepted for publication if it is made clear that investigations were carried out to a high ethical standard. Formal and documented ethical approval from an appropriately constituted research ethics committee should be obtained for all studies involving people, medical records, and anonymised human tissues. All such studies should conform to the World Medical Association Declaration of Helsinki (June 1964) and subsequent amendments (www.wma.net/e/policy/b3.htm) and typescripts should include a statement that the research protocol was approved by the local Ethical Committee or equivalent. Animal experiments require full compliance with local, national, ethical, and regulatory principles, and local licensing arrangements and the journal will not accept papers for publication if doubts exist over the standards of care and humanity shown to experimental animals. For this reason a clear statement of the care principles used should be included in the text. Guidelines on publication ethics adhered to by this journal are to be found at the Committee on Publication Ethics website at www.publicationethics.org.uk.

The Editor reserves the right to make editorial and literary changes. Recommendations regarding major rearrangements or corrections may be offered to help authors re-write their communications in a way that is acceptable to the Journal. Rejected papers will not be returned to the authors except on request.

Submission of Manuscripts
Manuscripts may be submitted either electronically or through the post. Electronic submission using Elsevier's Editorial System (EES) (see below) is strongly encouraged, and may result in a quicker route to publication. In either case the text, tables and illustrations should be prepared in accordance with the instructions given under 'Preparation of Manuscripts' below.

Electronic Submission
All text, including references, author details, figure legends and tables should be prepared in a single file. Illustrations may be incorporated into this file or supplied as separate files. A minimum resolution of 300 d.p.i. is required if the digital illustrations are to be used for printing. Photographs scanned at lower resolution may rarely be submitted for use in the peer-review process, provided that the original photographs are mailed to the Journal Office for use in the production process. To submit the paper, go to External link http://ees.elsevier.com/jpras , and follow the instructions provided on screen.

Submission through the mail
The author should submit three copies of the manuscript together with three sets of illustrations and should retain one complete copy. The Journal is not responsible for losses in the mail. All manuscripts must be sent to:

Care of Annette Fowler
JPRAS Editorial Office
Health Sciences
Elsevier Ltd
The Boulevard
Kidlington, Oxford
OX5 1GB
UK

Manuscripts submitted by mail will be made available for on-line peer-review, so it is essential that the manuscript is accompanied by a disk containing the full text and any tables and preferably any illustrations at a publication resolution (see above). Label the disk clearly with the title of the article. If illustrations are not available in digital format, the hard copies will be scanned at low resolution when the paper is received by the Journal Office. Authors should state in their submission letter whether they wish to receive future correspondence by post or e-mail, recognizing that e-mail speeds the process of communication and therefore publication considerably.

All illustrations should be clearly marked by a label pasted on the back or by a soft pencil with the abbreviated paper title, figure number and the top of the figure indicated by an arrow. Do not use ink or paper clips on photographs.

Preparation of Manuscripts
Failure to submit papers in accordance with these Instructions will result in the return of the manuscript for correction before it is sent out for review. All copy must be typed double spaced, including text, bibliographies, figure legends and tables. All pages should be numbered in the top left corner.
The Journal operates a double-blind peer-review system. For this reason author details should not be used as a footnote or running head on each page of the typescript or as a means of labeling illustrations.
Papers should be set out as follows: title page, summary, keywords, text, acknowledgements, references, author details, captions to illustrations, tables.

Title Page
The title page should give the following: (1) title of the article, (2) initials and name of each author, (3) name and address of the department or institution to which the work should be attributed, (4) the name, address, telephone, fax and e-mail details of the author responsible for editorial correspondence and (5) details of any meeting at which the work was presented wholly or in part.

Summary
This should consist of not more than 350 words. The Journal does not demand structured abstracts, but the summary should briefly describe the background and purposes of the study, the subjects studied and the methods used, the main findings (including specific data and statistical analysis) and the conclusions. Four to six keywords should be provided at the end of the summary.

Text
Headings should be appropriate to the nature of the paper. Research papers should usually be split into sections under the headings: Introduction, Materials/Patients and Methods, Results and Discussion. Other headings may be appropriate depending on the nature of the paper, and the proper use of headings enhances clarity and readability. Normally only two categories of headings should be used, which should be clearly distinguished. Use generic names of drugs, suture materials and instruments whenever possible. Give the trade name in brackets after the generic or approved name, and spell it with a capital letter.
Avoid abbreviations in the title and summary and explain abbreviations when they first occur in the text.
Use SI units throughout. Spell out the numbers one to ten except when used for units of measurement (mass, time, length); for numbers over ten use numerals except when starting a sentence. Do not give percentages if the total number in the sample is less than fifty. Round percentages greater than ten to the nearest whole number.
Numerical data should be analysed by appropriate statistical methods. When evaluating a manuscript, the Editor and statistical referees will consider the design of the study, the presentation of the data, the analysis of the data and the interpretation of the results. The use of standard deviation and standard error should be clearly distinguished. The statistical tests used should be stated clearly in the 'Methods' section of the paper. Statistical significance should not be confused with clinical significance. In particular, 'negative' findings should be interpreted through the use of confidence intervals. Authors should beware of placing undue emphasis on secondary analyses, especially when they are suggested by an inspection of the data.

Tables
These should be double spaced, and contain only horizontal rules. Format tables with tabs rather than spaces, or prepare them as tables in Microsoft Word. Do not submit tables as photographs. A short descriptive title should appear above each table and any footnotes, suitably identified, below. Care must be taken to ensure that all units are included. Ensure that each table is cited in the text.

Illustrations
Legends are required for illustrations and should be included as part of the typescript rather than attached to the illustrations. All illustrations should be referred to as figures and should be numbered in a single sequence.
Line illustrations should present a crisp image on an even white background 127 x 173 mm (5 x 7 in), or no larger than 203 x 254 mm (8 x 10 in).

Photographic Illustrations and Radiographs
The Journal is published in full colour at no charge to authors, so colour photographs should be submitted wherever possible. Photographs must be in sharp focus with good contrast and should not be altered or retouched in any way. 'Before' and 'after' photographs of patients should be standardised in terms of size, position and lighting. Provide scale bars on photomicrographs rather than stating the magnification in the legend.

Patient Confidentiality
Where illustrations must include individuals of whatever age who are recognizable or whose identity may be deduced from the context, written consent must be obtained for publication. All identifying features not considered relevant to the text will be obscured.

Permission for Reproduction
Written permission to reproduce borrowed material such as illustrations and tables must be obtained from the original copyright holders and submitted with the typescript. Borrowed material should be acknowledged in the legends in this style: 'Reproduced with the permission of ... (publishers/journal) from (reference)'.

References
The accuracy of references is the responsibility of the authors. References are checked as far as possible during the review process. This is an onerous task for volunteer reviewers and to facilitate this authors must submit two photocopies of the first page of each reference cited with the manuscript. In the case of electronic submission please submit a separate file containing the references as downloaded from electronic source (e.g. Medline, PubMed etc) and including the abstract fields and identifier fields unaltered so that the accuracy of the reference and its relevance may be confirmed. Failure to do this will debar the manuscript from review or publication. Limit citations to those that are essential to the study. It is not necessary or appropriate to quote each and every historical reference unless there is a specific point to be made. References derived from computer literature searches should not be cited unless they have been read and contribute specifically to the discussion. References should be cited in the text in numerical order, not alphabetically, and indicated in the text by arabic superscripts, e.g. 1,2 or 1-4 as written. The reference list should be in numerical order in double spacing. Include authors' names and initials. If there are more than six authors list only the first three and add et al. Journal titles should be abbreviated using Index Medicus abbreviations. Set out references as in the following examples (Vancouver):
Stranc MF, Sowa MG, Abdulrauf B, Mantsch HH. Assessment of tissue viability using near-infrared spectroscopy. Br J Plast Surg 1998; 51: 210-217.
Lister GD. Skin flaps. In Green DP, ed. Operative Hand Surgery. 3rd ed. New York: Churchill Livingstone, 1993: 1741-1823.
Mathes SJ, Nahai F. Reconstructive Surgery: principles, anatomy, and technique. New York: Churchill Livingstone, 1997.

Page Proofs
Page proofs are sent to the author for checking. The proofs, with any minor corrections, must be returned to the Issue Manager at Elsevier within 48 hours of receipt.

Offprints
Twenty-five free offprints are supplied to the author to whom offprint requests are made. An offprint order form will be sent to the author with page proofs.

Acknowledgements
Place these at the end of the main text and before the references. You may acknowledge technical help in carrying out a study but not in preparation of a manuscript. Give details of any funding or other support for the study, and declare any commercial interest the authors may have in products used in the study.

Short Reports and Letters to the Editor
Submission Articles intended for publication in the Short Reports and Correspondence section should be submitted as for any other article, and again electronic submission is more likely to result in rapid publication, provided the conditions above are satisfied.

Although the Journal does not impose rigid restrictions on the length of Short Reports or the number of tables and illustrations, articles intended for publication in this section should be restricted and the text presented as briefly as possible. As a guide, articles should be approximately 800 words in length and not exceed 1200 words, eight references and two tables or illustrations. Succinct articles are more likely to be accepted for publication.
Short reports should be structured as follows: Title, Text, Author Details (including academic degrees, posts held, and the full postal address for each author), References, Tables and Figures. References, tables and figures should be prepared as described above for full papers.
If the article is a 'reply' to a published article, then the article being replied to should be included in the reference list.

Copyright and redundant publication
Contributions are accepted on the understanding that they have not been submitted simultaneously to another Journal and have not been published elsewhere. Dual publication or redundant publication is unethical. Redundant publication occurs when two or more papers, without full cross reference, share the same hypothesis, data, discussion points, or conclusions. For more details on what is and is not acceptable please refer to COPE on www.publicationethics.org.uk
Contributions will be the property of the British Association of Plastic Surgeons and the copyright on each paper published must be assigned to the Association by all of the authors. A copyright form can be obtained from the journal web site, www.bjps.com or from the Journal Office, and should be submitted with the manuscript or as soon as possible thereafter.
