The Journal of the Energy Institute provides peer reviewed coverage of original high quality research on energy engineering and technology. The coverage is broad and the main areas of interest include: - Combustion engineering and associated technologies; process heating; power generation; engines and propulsion; emissions and environmental pollution control; clean coal technologies; carbon abatement technologies - Petroleum engineering, including storage and transport - Alternative energy sources; biomass utilisation and biomass conversion technologies; energy from waste, incineration and recycling - Energy conversion, energy recovery and energy efficiency; space heating, fuel cells, heat pumps and cooling systems - Energy storage and transmission - Instrumentation, sensors and control - Fire (combustion aspects only), safety and hazards.

The Journal of the Energy Institute provides peer reviewed coverage of original high quality research on energy engineering and technology. The coverage is broad and the main areas of interest include:
l Combustion engineering and associated technologies, process heating, power generation,
engines and propulsion. Emissions and environmental pollution control. Clean coal technologies.
Carbon abatement technologies
l Petroleum engineering including storage and transport
l Alternative energy sources. Biomass utilisation and biomass conversion technologies.
Energy from waste, incineration and recycling
l Energy conversion, energy recovery and energy efficiency. Space heating, fuel cells, heat
pumps and cooling systems
l Energy storage and transmission
l Instrumentation, sensors and control

TYPES OF CONTRIBUTION
l papers reporting research and practice, typically 3000 to 4000 words in length plus figures
and tables
l short communications, providing a rapid publication route for preliminary announcements
of current work, or short accounts of new techniques, typically 1000-1500 words in length with,
at most, four figures and/or tables
l critical assessments/reviews, dealing with their subject in broad perspective, examining
the current position critically; these are typically 4000-5000 words in length plus figures
and tables, and very well referenced
SUBMISSION PROCEDURE
Manuscripts are considered on the understanding that they present original work that has not been previously published in the same or similar form. Authors are responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce any material for which they do not hold copyright. Authors must transfer copyright to the Energy Institute but are permitted to post a version of the published paper on their personal website provided copyright is acknowledged; the correct citation in the published journal is given; and a link is provided to the journal's homepage.
Submissions should be sent as email attachments to: the Editor at fueaw@leeds.ac.uk and manuscripts should be supplied in Word or PDF format. Hard copy submissions will also be accepted and in that case send two copies of the manuscripts (double spaced, on one side of the paper) to: Professor Alan Williams, Editor JEI, Energy and Resources Research Institute, SPEME, Houldsworth Building University of Leeds, Leeds, LS2 9JT, UK.
The submitted manuscript must contain:
l a title page giving full contact details, including email addresses, for all authors. Pages should
be numbered consecutively with the title page as page 1
l an abstract of no more than 150 words, giving a concise summary of the aims, content,
and conclusions of the paper
l up to six keywords to be used for indexing purposes
l text: section and subsection headings should be clearly differentiated, using a structured
numbering system if necessary
l appendices (if any)
l acknowledgements (if any)
l references (see below)
l tables and list of figure captions. Each figure should have a caption that is intelligible
without reference to the text.
l use of SI units is mandatory. Journal style is to use the form ms-1, Wm-1K-1
FOLLOWING ACCEPTANCE FOR PUBLICATION
On acceptance, authors must supply an electronic version of the final text in Word or a compatible word processor format, to the specification below. This can be emailed to the Editor at the address above. Failure to conform to these requirements may delay publication. Authors are also encouraged to provide electronic versions of figures (see below).
In preparing the electronic version, there is no need to format the article, but please include italic or bold type where necessary. Use hard returns only at the end of paragraphs; switch auto-hyphenation off; and do not justify text. Consistency in spacing, punctuation, and spelling is essential. Tables should be produced in Word Table mode, not using a tab between columns or the space bar.
The full form of any abbreviation should be given in the text when the term is first used. A list of symbols should be provided if helpful to the reader.
Figures should be cited in a single sequence throughout the text as 'Fig.1', 'Fig.2', ¡
Equations and tables should also be numbered in sequence and referred to in the text as, for example, 'equation (1)' and 'Table 1' respectively.
Reference and notes should be numbered serially in a single sequence. Citations in the text should be as superscripts outside any punctuation marks, thus.1,2, 4-6 References cited for the first time in a table or figure caption should be numbered as if they appeared in the text where the table or figure is first mentioned. References should be set out in a numbered list.
Journal abbreviations in references follow the ISO system, e.g.
P. T. Williams and S. Besler: Renewable Energy, 1996, 7, 233-250.
If the abbreviation is not known, the journal title should be given in full.
Book references should give full bibliographic details, e.g.
J. V. Wood: in 'Future developments of materials', (ed. J. A. Charles et al.), 2nd edn, Vol.1, 235-239; 1992, London, The Institute of Materials.
Conference references must include the date, location, and organiser or publisher of the meeting, e.g.
T. Abbas, P. Costen, M. A. Hassan and F. C. Lockwood: Proc. 1st Int. Conf. on 'Combustion technologies for a clean environment', Vilamoura, Portugal, September 1991, Paper 5.1.
ILLUSTRATIONS
All illustrations must be suitable for reproduction in black and white. Coloured lines, contour maps, etc. often do not reproduce adequately and suitable labelling should be used to ensure clarity. Colour reproduction of figures is possible if authors are prepared to contribute to the additional costs.
Authors are strongly encouraged to submit electronic versions of figures to the specification given below. Each figure must be supplied as a separate file, and hard copies or a PDF file of all figures should also be provided to confirm identity.
Halftones (photographs) should be supplied as greyscale tiff or jpeg files and must have a resolution of at least 120 pixels cm-1 at final size. Figures embedded in Word documents are not suitable for reproduction.
Line drawings or diagrams with shaded or toned areas should be submitted as tiff or eps files of at least 480 pixels cm-1 resolution at final size.
Colour figures, where the author has agreed to contribute towards the additional cost of reproduction, should be provided as CMYK tiff or jpeg files.
Where electronic versions are not available, high quality prints should be provided of any photographs. Line drawings should be provided as high quality printouts, large enough to allow reduction to 80 mm (single column width) or 168 mm (page width) for printing.
Authors must ensure that the labelling on figures will be legible when reduced to final size.
