About the Journal

The Journal of Nursing Research (JNR) is comprised of original articles that come from a variety of national and international institutions and reflect trends and issues of contemporary nursing practice in Taiwan. All articles are published in English so that JNR can better serve the whole nursing profession and introduce nursing in Taiwan to people around the world. Topics cover not only the field of nursing but also related fields such as psychology, education, management and statistics.

The Journal of Nursing Research accepts manuscript submissions through a submission service on another website.

The Journal of Nursing Research has specific instructions and guidelines for submitting articles. Those instructions and guidelines are readily available on the submission service site. Please read and review them carefully. Articles that are not submitted in accordance with our instructions and guidelines are more likely to be rejected.

I. Editorial Policy
    The Editor of The Journal of Nursing Research (JNR) welcomes manuscripts on topics that are relevant and of interest to current nursing research in the realms of nursing practice, theory and philosophy. Manuscripts will be considered for publication on the understanding that they are original, meta-analysis research, review articles, or brief reports that have not been published previously and are not under consideration elsewhere. Authors must give a letter of consent stating exclusive submission to The Journal of Nursing Research.

    If the reported research involves the collection or use of physiological specimens within Taiwan, please ensure that all such activities comply with Taiwan Department of Health guidelines. To protect human rights, all research conducted on human subjects must be approved by either an Institutional Review Board (IRB) or Community Review Board (CRB).

    Duplicated or piecemeal publication is not allowed in accordance with the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA), 6th edition, 2009. If authors have previously published an article or have a manuscript that has been accepted for publication that is related or similar to the current submission, it is strongly recommended that the authors cite the article/manuscript in the current submission.

II. General Guidelines
    Manuscript submissions will be accepted only via the website: http://www.editorialmanager.com/jnr/.

Format of Manuscript:
All manuscripts should be formatted double-spaced with one-inch margins for A4 paper. Preferred font is Times New Roman, 12 pt. All pages should be numbered consecutively, starting at the beginning of the article immediately after the abstract page.

III. Manuscript Structure

Title Page: Chinese speaking authors should provide manuscript titles and author information in English and Chinese (in English only for other authors). Author information should include: author name(s), credentials, institution(s) and country(ies), as well as correspondence name; address; telephone, cell phone and fax number and two (2) e-mail addresses. List title as "Topic/question: design/type of paper" and include population or care setting studied.

Abstract: Chinese-speaking authors should provide abstracts in both English and Chinese. English abstract should be around 300 words in length and not more than 400 words. The Chinese abstract should be 300–400 Chinese characters. Abstracts should be divided into paragraphs with the following headings: Background (背景), Purpose (目的), Methods (方法), Results (結果), and Conclusions / Implications for Practice (結論/實務應用). English and Chinese abstract content should be substantively the same. Up to five key words should be provided.

Headings: The manuscript should be organized under headings such as Introduction, Methods, Results and Discussion.

Tables and Figures: Upload each table and figure to Editorial Manager as its own distinct file. Image files may be saved as TIFF, PDF, Word doc, PPT, or EPS file and should be created at a resolution adequate (or slightly more than adequate) to provide a clear print copy in the journal. Diagrams, drawings, graphs, and other line art must be in vector format or saved at a resolution >1200 dpi. Images created using MS Office should be converted to a high-resolution PDF (You may submit the original MS Office document(s) if you are unfamiliar with how to create PDF files). Photographs, radiographs and other halftone images must be saved at resolutions >300 dpi. Photographs and radiographs with text must be saved as postscript documents at resolutions >600 dpi. Remember to number figures (i.e., Figure 1, Figure 2, etc.) in the order in which they are discussed. Upload figures in proper sequence to the Editorial Manager website, and number figures consecutively in the Description box during upload. Acknowledgments: Acknowledgments should be brief and limited to key contributors.

References and Style: Articles referred to in the manuscript should be fully cited, with references to articles dated within the last five years preferred. References, photographs, tables and all other details of style must conform to the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA), 6th edition, 2009, which includes "DOI" at the end of each reference. No more than three references should be used to support a single idea. The APA format system uses names and years in the text. Literature sources are arranged in alphabetical order in the reference list by the surname of the first author. If a cited reference is in Chinese, the addendum "(Original work published in Chinese)" should be placed at the end of the reference.

IV. Types of Submissions

Original Research: Original research is a manuscript that presents novel nursing-relevant studies not yet addressed in previous reports. Original research should be no more than 20 pages (double-spaced), including the abstract and tables / figures. Tables and figures should be kept to fewer than 5. References should not exceed 30 citations for original articles and 50 citations for meta-analysis articles.

Review Articles: Review articles clearly define a problem, evaluate previous published materials, and suggest further steps for problem solving. Divide the text into headings such as Introduction, Aim, Methods, Results, and Discussion. Review articles should be no more than 20 pages (double-spaced), including the abstract and tables / figures. Tables and figures should be kept to fewer than 5. References should not exceed 50 citations.

Brief Reports: Brief reports feature limited, critical studies; cutting edge ideas; well-done pilot studies; or studies with limited samples but important results. It should include a succinct abstract (up to 200 words); a body divided into the following sections: Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion, Summary/ Implications for Practice; and no more than 15 references. Brief reports may be up to a maximum 1,500 words in length (a maximum of 2 tables and/or figures in total), not including the abstract.

V. Review
    During the double-blind peer review process, the author may amend the manuscript no more than twice. Revised manuscripts should be resubmitted within two months. If a revised manuscript is not received by the editor of the JNR within the two-month period, the author will be considered as having abandoned his / her submission. After completion of peer review, the author may make no further substantive amendments to the manuscript. After a manuscript is accepted, it will be checked for proper spelling and grammar by JNR’s consultant. The cost of such shall be borne by the JNR up to a maximum NT$2,400 per article. Any excess shall be payable by the author. The author may apply for a certificate of publication from the JNR after the manuscript is accepted and approved for publication by the chief editor. After a manuscript is accepted for publication, no further amendments may be made by any author.

VI. Copyright
    Upon submission of the manuscript, all authors should sign the copyright transfer sheet to confirm that the manuscript has been exclusively submitted to the JNR (please download from website: http://edmgr.ovid.com/jnr/accounts/copyrightTransfer.pdf). Copyright is ceded in full to the Taiwan Nurses Association with effect from the date of manuscript submission. The TWNA may use the work in any lawful way in accordance with the provisions of the ROC Copyright Act. However, authors retain the right of non-commercial use for the publishing of their cumulative works, for teaching purposes, and for online self-archiving.

VII. Proofs
    It is the author’s responsibility to check the accuracy of material appearing in proofs. Each proof should be returned within three days. Amendments made during proofreading should not substantively change the original content of the article.
    One current issue and PDF file will be supplied free to the correspondence author for each paper published. Published articles are in principle limited to 10 journal pages. Additional pages will be charged to authors at NT$800 per page. Accepted manuscripts become the property of The Journal of Nursing Research and may be reproduced in other publications in whole or in part only with the permission of the JNR. As declined manuscripts are not returned, authors should be sure to keep copies for their files.
