Instructions to Authors
The journal is published twice a year by the Council of the Natal Museum. African Invertebrates covers the taxonomy, systematics, biogeography, biology, ecology, conservation and palaeontology of Afrotropical invertebrates, whether terrestrial, freshwater or marine. All contributions are published in English (British Standard). It is understood that manuscripts submitted to African Invertebrates have not been offered to any other journal for prior or simultaneous publication. The length of manuscripts generally should not exceed 50 printed pages. Exceptions, as in the case of monographic revisions, can be negotiated in advance with the Editor-in-Chief. Authors, particularly those with institutional support, are expected to cover the costs of colour print and contribute toward the printing cost of exceptionally long articles. When preparing manuscripts, authors are encouraged to make use of extensive holdings of the Natal Museum and other South African museums and collections, and to deposit holotypes (paratypes) and voucher specimens in recognised South African institutions.

Editorial procedures:

  • Editor-in-Chief and Associate Editors consider submitted manuscripts and decide if they are suitable for publication in the journal. Only papers considered suitable will be sent out for review.
  • All manuscripts will have a minimum of two external reviewers, i.e. reviewers who are not members of the Editorial Board; this does not preclude members of the Editorial Board from reviewing manuscripts. The choice of reviewers is the responsibility of the Editor-in-Chief and Associate Editors, who should seek assistance from the Editorial Board or Editorial Advisory Board. The peer-review process should be seen as a way to ensure a high academic standard of published papers.
  • The decision to accept or reject a manuscript once the review process has been followed is the responsibility of the Editor-in-Chief and Associate Editors and/or the Editorial Board. No papers may be accepted without going under the above procedure. In case of negative reviews, authors may be given an opportunity to respond before the Editor-in-Chief and Associate Editors and/or the Editorial Board draw a final decision.
  • The Editorial Board and the Editorial Advisory Board members will be expected to comment on the quality of the journal content and production shortly after issues are published, to ensure that there is no drop in standard.
