About the journal
Geostandards Newsletter was founded in 1977 by Dr. Kuppusami Govindaraju (affectionally known as "Raj"), at the Centre de Recherches Petrographiques et Geochimiques in Nancy, France, who acted as editor for twenty years.
Raj set the stage for the Journal in his first editorial:
"During the past few years, the need for a journal devoted entirely to problems of Geochemical Reference Samples (GRS) became increasingly evident, as leading Geochemical Journals began to restrict or even to discontinue the publication of papers dealing with geostandards. The need for such a journal seems to have been so keenly felt that our first attempt, early in 1976, to contract with several specialists in the field of GRS for the purpose of starting a journal for geostandards met with immediate success. Within a matter of three months it became possible to constitute an international board of editors and to define with their help, the 'scope and aims' of the Journal: Geostandards Newsletter."
Upon Raj's retirement in 1996, the responsibility for editing the Journal was assumed by Philip Potts (Open University, UK) and Mireille Polv (Universit Paul Sabatier, Toulouse, France) as joint Editors-in-Chief. Successfully relaunched with an entirely new format and an expanded scope in 1997 with Volume 21, when it acquired the sub-title 'The Journal of Geostandards and Geoanalysis', Geostandards Newsletter was published in two issues until 2001, when three issues per year were introduced.
In 2004, the Journal was retitled 'Geostandards and Geoanalytical Research', to emphasise its status as a primary scientific research journal.
'Geostandards and Geoanalytical Research' continues as the official journal of the International Association of Geoanalysts (IAG), which adopted the relaunched Geostandards Newsletter as its official publication in 1997.
