The Comptes rendus Chimie publishes original research (notes, short papers) and journals (short review papers, historic chronicles) in all areas of chemistry (organic, inorganic, bio-organic, bio-inorganic, organo-metallic, physical, solid state, etc.). Notes (preliminary communications) should state the latest results and are usually followed by a longer publication. Short papers are a concise account of developments in a narrow area. They should include an experimental section. Short review papers are abridged descriptions of the most recent advances in the field. Historic chronicles are intended to highlight turning points in the history of chemistry.
Please follow these instructions carefully so that your manuscript may be handled expeditiously. They are liable to modifications. As a consequence, we request that authors always consult the last issue available, or the publishers web site (http://www.elsevier.fr).

Submission and reviewing of manuscripts
The manuscripts (in quadruplicate) must be submitted to:
Marie-Christine Brissot, Academie des sciences, 23, quai de Conti, 75006 Paris, France; fax: (+33) (0)1 44 41 43 84 ;
mc.brissot@academie-sciences.fr

Preparation of manuscripts

  • Language and length
Contributions can be either bilingual (English-French) or submitted in French. If written in French, a contribution must have an abstract in French and one in English of no more of 100 words each. Contributions in English should include an abridged French version (of no more than a printed page) instead of the French abstract. In the case of an article written in English, the ?Academie des sciences? could, if necessary, at the request of the author, provide the translation in French of the abstract and abridged version. This translation would be submitted to the author for approval before publication.
Short papers should not exceed 8 printed pages, review papers and historic chronicles should be limited to 12 printed pages, notes should be limited to 6 printed pages. However, contributions may exceed these limits with the permission of the Editors.
A printed page is equivalent to 6 000 characters in total, including letters, symbols and spaces; a quarter-page figure is equivalent to 1 500 characters.
Notes should not exceed 6 printed pages.
  • Presentation and section of the manuscript
It must be typed, double spaced, on one side of the paper only, and each page must be numbered. Each copy will be accompanied by figures and tables.
Manuscripts should be divided into the following sequence of sections: 1) the title, in French and in English (short, but explicit); 2) the name of each of the authors, including full first name (the name of the author to which correspondence and proofs will be sent must be followed by an asterisk); 3) the addresses of each of the authors (full postal addresses, including phone and fax numbers, and, if any, e-mail addresses); 4) the abstracts (in English and French) and/or the abridged French version, followed by keywords (maximum 7, in both English and French); 5) the text of the article (section headings should be numbered following the international numbering system, i.e. 1.; 1.1.; 1.1.1.; footnotes are not permitted); 6) the reference number of the deposited supplementary material, if any, and, if desired, acknowledgements (maximum 3 lines); 7) references, figure (and, if any, scheme) captions, figures (and schemes), tables. The abstract (100 to 150 words) and keywords must be written in French and in English.
  • References
References must be numbered and listed sequentially as they appear in the text (all autotext, field, bookmark, caption, cross-reference, etc. options must be avoided since they cannot be exploited). All entries in the reference list must correspond to references in the text and vice versa. References must be cited in the text by their number between square brackets. The titles of journals should be abbreviated according to the international rules (please refer to the Liste d?abreviations de mots des titres de publications en serie (conforming to ISO 4, Centre international de l?ISSN, Paris) or to the Physical Abstracts, available from http :www.issn.org ; words for which no abbreviation is given should be written in full.). Bold and italic characters should not be used in the reference list, except when made necessary by the context (for example, when imposed by nomenclature rules). Multiple references under the same number are not permitted.

Examples are given below of the layout to be used in the reference list.
Article (all authors must be mentioned):
[1] P. Le Floch, L. Ricard, F. Mathey, A. Jutand, C. Amatore, Inorg. Chem. 34 (1995) 11.
Book:
[2] J. Tsuji, Perspectives in Organopalladium Chemistry for the XXIst Century, Elsevier Science, Lausanne, 1999, p. 99.
Chapter in a book:
[3] P.W. Jolly, G. Wilke, in: B. Cornil, W.A. Herrman (Eds.), Applied Homogenous Catalysis with Organic Compounds 2, Wiley-VCH, 1996, p. 1024.

A list of all the other possibilities (journal supplements, proceedings of a congress, accepted articles, edited books, translations, theses, patents, standards, etc.) is available on request from the Editorial Board.

  • Figures
All illustrations should be labelled as figures (and/or schemes) and numbered using Arabic numerals. Every figure must be cited in the text. There cannot be illustrations labelled as 'figures' and illustrations labelled as 'schemes' in the same article. A set of original documents or photographs should be provided for reproduction of the figures. Whenever possible, figures should be submitted in their desired final size, i.e. 80 mm wide. Double column figures if they cannot be avoided should not exceed 175 mm in width. No original document should in any case exceed A4 size (21 X 29.7 cm). Photographs and half-tones should contain good contrasts. See section belowe concerning the documents supplied in electronic format. There is no special charge for inclusion of colour plates in 2001. In reaction diagrams it is preferable to indicate the main reagents and the experimental conditions above the arrow in preference to in a note under the equation.
Figures and structural formulae which are not on a single line will not be redrawn; they can be inserted in the text but should be provided on separate sheets at the end of the manuscript. They should be of high enough quality to allow direct reproduction. The figures should be on white paper and units and symbols should be consistent between the figures and with the text. Characters should be large enough to remain legible after a possible reduction of 70 %. The typeface Helvetica should preferably be used for text in the figures. If possible, it is recommended that ChemDraw? is used (see tables I and II below for the settings); this style is used by the journals Synthesis and Synlett.
  • Tables
They should be together at the end of the manuscript, even if they appear within the text. They should be numbered using Roman numbers and should be in numerical order in the text. There should not be vertical lines in the tables. A caption is required for each table.
  • Conventions and abbreviations
Abbreviations should be defined in brackets after their first mention in the text. Internationally accepted units and nomenclature must be used (ISO 31 and ISO 1000). Standard units of measurements and chemical symbols of elements may be used without definition in the manuscript.
  • Formulae and equations
Mathematical or chemical equations and formulae must be clearly set out; in particular, exponents and indices should be carefully placed. Less common symbols should either be indicated in the margin of the manuscript or in a list. If necessary, special instructions or explanations for the printer should be clearly set out on a separate sheet attached to the manuscript. Moreover, no sentence should begin with a mathematical formula. Each numbered formula must be cited in the text by its number.
  • Crystallographic data and supplementary material
Manuscripts which are concerned with the determination of crystallographic structures using X-rays should be accompanied by supplementary material (see corresponding section). These manuscripts should include a list of the lengths of the main bonds and their angles. Ortep figures (except for stereochemical diagrams) are also required. The data regarding the verification of the stereochemical structure of organic molecules will not be published, but can be included in the supplementary material.
This material should be provided in duplicate. It should comprise: all the calculated atomic co-ordinates, all the anisotropic thermal parameters, all the bond-lengths and angles, structure factors for all the reflections, a stereoscopic view of the molecular packing. These data should be sent by the authors directly to the Cambridge Crystallographic Data Centre (CCDC) in Cambridge, UK, for structures with at least one carbon atom, and to the Fachinformationzentrum (FIZ) in Karlsruhe, Germany, for other structures. Supplementary material can be submitted either by e-mail or in hard copy form to the CCDC or on disk to the Fiz.

For further information contact:
- the Cambridge Crystallographic Data Centre, 12 Union Road, Cambridge CB2 1EZ, UK, or fileserv@ccdc.cam.ac.uk enclosing the message ?send me a check list?. Data can be deposited at deposit@ccdc.cam.ac.uk;
- the Fachinformationzentrum Karlsruhe, Abt. PROKA, 76344 Eggen-stein-Leopoldshafen, Germany, or crysdata@fiz-karlsruhe.de, www.fiz-karlsruhe.de/fiz/products/icsdcsde.html.

The authors should include the following passage at the end of their article:
'The supplementary material has been sent to the Cambridge Crystallographic Data Centre, 12 Union Road, Cambridge CB2 1EZ, UK / Fachinformationzentrum Karlsruhe, Abt. PROKA, 76344 Eggenstein-Leopoldshafen, Germany, as supplementary material No. SUP... (... pages) and can be obtained by contacting the CCDC / FIZ (quoting the article details and the corresponding SUP number).'

The standard paragraph describing the supplementary material must be added at the end of the article.

  • Electronic documents
All articles must be supplied on disk or Zip (Macintosh or PC formatted see the document Instructions for the preparation of electronic files, sent to authors by the Service des Comptes rendus and available on the publishers web site at the following address: www.elsevier.fr). The following information should be mentioned on the disk: name of the file, operating system (ex: MS DOS, Apple, Unix), word processor and version number (ex: Word 5.1). Texts will have been preferably edited in Word. Tables must be saved in a separate file, in Word or Excel formats exclusively. Figures should be saved in TIFF (minimum 400 dpi resolution), EPS, ChemDraw (see above) or Adobe Illustrator formats. EPS format is therefore not suitable for text-containing files. Figures in Word format cannot be used. It is important to check that the files on the disk correspond to the final version. Only zip disks will be returned.

Proof reading
Proofs should be checked immediately and carefully (only corrections of typographical errors can be made on the proofs) and returned within 48 hours by express (special delivery) mail or by fax to Editions Scientifiques et Médicales Elsevier (ESME), 23, rue Linois, 75724 Paris cedex 15, France. If there is no reply within 8 days, the article will be published with just the publishers corrections. Authors corrections, i.e. any substantial changes to the text and figure made by the author on the proofs, other than typesetting errors or corrections required by the Editor-in-Chief of the Comptes rendus, are not permitted.

Reprints
Authors will receive 25 reprints of their article free of charge. Additional copies can be obtained at the authors expense. Reprint order forms are sent out with the proofs and must be returned with them if additional reprints are required.

Return of original figures
Authors wishing to have their original figures returned should request this when returning their corrected proofs.
