Instructions to Authors

Authors submitting a paper do so on the understanding that the work has not been published before, is not being considered for publication elsewhere and has been read and approved by all authors. When the manuscript has been accepted for publication the corresponding author will receive a Copyright Assignment form from the Editorial Office to be returned signed on behalf of all co-authors.

You can also download the Copyright Assignment Form here

The work shall not be published elsewhere in any language without the written consent of the publisher. The articles published in this journal are protected by copyright, which covers translation rights and the exclusive right to reproduce and distribute all of the articles printed in the journal. No material published in the journal may be stored on microfilm or videocassettes or in electronic databases and the like or reproduced photographically without the prior written permission of the publisher.

Manuscripts - The manuscripts should be submitted in correct English. Provide a computer disk containing an exact copy of the manuscript, with tables and figures in a separate file (TIFF, EPS or JPEG). 3 printed, double-spaced copies including figures and tables must accompany the disk. Label the disk clearly with the journal name, author and title, file content, computer system (DOS, Windows or Macintosh), word processor (Word, WordPerfect etc.) and version used. Do not convert your manuscript to ASCII format. Include only the files corresponding to the manuscript.

As the Journal follows the Vancouver system for biomedical manuscripts, the author is referred to the publication of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors: Uniform requirements for manuscripts submitted to biomedical journals. Ann Int Med 1997;126:36-47.

Title page - The title page should contain the following information in the order given: 1) Full title of manuscript. 2) Authors' full names. 3) Authors' institutional affiliations including city and country. 4) A running title, not exceeding 60 letters and spaces. 5) The name and address of the author responsible for correspondence about the manuscript.

Abstract page - A separate abstract page should contain the following: 1) Authors' surnames and initials. 2) Title of manuscript. 3) Title of Journal, abbreviated as in reference list. 4) The word Abstract followed by a summary of the complete manuscript. 5) Key words according to Index Medicus. 6) Name and address of the author to whom requests for offprints should be sent.

References - Number references consecutively in the order in which they are first mentioned in the text. Identify references in texts, tables, and legends by Arabic numerals (in parentheses). Use the style of the examples below, which are based on the format used by the US National Library of Medicine in Index Medicus. For abbreviations of journals, consult the "List of the Journals Indexed" printed annually in the January issue of Index Medicus.

Try to avoid using abstracts of articles as references. "Unpublished observations", "personal communications", and unaccepted papers may not be used as references, although references to written, not verbal, communications may be inserted (in parentheses) in the text. Examples of correct forms of references are given below.

Journals
Standard journal article - list all authors when six or fewer; when seven or more, list first six authors and add et al.

Examples:
Andreasen JO, Hjørting-Hansen E. Replantation of teeth. I. Radiographic and clinical study of 100 human teeth. Acta Odontol Scand 1966;24:263-86.

Corporate author
American Association of Endodontists. Recommended guidelines for treatment of the avulsed tooth. J Endod 1983;9:571.

Books and other monographs

Examples:
Personal author(s)
Grossman LI. Endodontic practice. 10th ed. Philadelphia: Lea & Febiger; 1981. p. 176-9.

Chapter in book
Sanders B, Brady FA, Johnson R. Injuries. In: Sanders B, editor. Pediatric oral and maxillofacial surgery. St. Louis: Mosby; 1979. p. 330-400.

Illustrations - All graphs, drawings and photographs are considered figures and should be numbered in sequence with Arabic numerals and abbreviated Fig(s). Each figure should have a legend and all legends should be typed together on a separate sheet and numbered correspondingly. Text on the figures should be in capitals. Figures should be planned to fit the proportions of the printed page. The inclusion of color illustrations is at the discretion of the editor. The author may pay for the cost of additional color illustrations. The publisher will quote current rates. Original color transparencies as well as two sets of color prints should be submitted.

Tables - These should only be used to clarify important points. Tables must, as far as possible, be self-explanatory. The tables should be numbered consecutively with Arabic numerals. Each table should be typed on a separate sheet, with due regard for the proportions of the printed page.

Abbreviations, symbols and nomenclature - Consult the following sources for additional abbreviations: 1) CBE Style Manual Committee. Scientific style and format: the CBE manual for authors, editors, and publishers. 6th ed. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press; 1994; and 2) O'Connor M, Woodford FP. Writing scientific papers in English: an ELSE-Ciba Foundation guide for authors. Amsterdam: Elsevier-Excerpta Medica; 1975.

Case reports and short communications of 1-2 pages are accepted for quick publication. These papers need not follow the usual division into Material and methods, etc., but should have an abstract.

Meetings - Advance information about and reports from international meetings are welcome.

Author material archive policy - Please note that unless specifically requested, Blackwell Publishing will dispose of all hardcopy or electronic material submitted two months after publication. If you require the return of any material submitted, please inform the editorial office or production editor as soon as possible if you have not yet done so.

Offprints - Offprints can be obtained by using the offprint order form accompanying the proofs.

Extra issues - Larger papers or monographs may be published as additional issues (numbered as the ordinary issues), the full cost being paid by the author. Further information may be obtained from the editor.
