AUTHOR GUIDELINES

Manuscript Submissions
Authors should submit manuscripts including figures to the JCMM manuscript submission website (http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/jcmm).

Please read and apply the loading instructions given at this site, noting that all information entered during the submission process related to the manuscript should also be included, and be identical, to the final submitted version of the manuscript. The corresponding author must complete all the mandatory fields in the submission process, but preliminary data can be stored if additional information needs to be obtained - for example, the e-mail addresses of all the named authors (who will all be informed of the submission process). Should authors encounter difficulties they may contact the Blackwell Publishing support desk in the USA (Tel.: +1 434 817 2040 ext. 167, E-mail:support@scholarone.com).

All manuscripts and correspondence, not previously published, simultaneously submitted, or already accepted for publication elsewhere, are to be submitted to the Editor if you cannot submit online.

PRE-SUBMISSION ENGLISH-LANGUAGE EDITING
Authors for whom English is a second language may choose to have their manuscript professionally edited before submission to improve the English. English-language editing will (a) improve grammar, spelling and punctuation, (b) improve clarity and resolve any ambiguity caused by poor phrasing, and (c) improve word choice and ensure that the tone of the language is appropriate for an academic journal. A list of independent suppliers of editing services can be found at www.blackwellpublishing.com/bauthor/english_language.asp. All services are paid for and arrranged by the author, and use of one of these services does not guarantee acceptance or preference for publication.

COPYRIGHT INFORMATION
Submissions should be accompanied by a completed Exclusive Licence Form. Authors of all manuscripts are required to license copyright in their paper to Blackwell Publishing. Copyright licensing is a condition of publication and papers will not be passed to the publisher for production unless copyright has been licensed.

OnlineOpen is a pay-to-publish service from Wiley-Blackwell that offers authors whose papers are accepted for publication the opportunity to pay up-front for their manuscript to become open access (i.e. free for all to view and download) via the journal website. Each OnlineOpen article will be subject to a one-off fee of $3000 to be met by or on behalf of the Author in advance of publication. Upon online publication, the article (both full-text and PDF versions) will be available to all for viewing and download free of charge. The print version of the article will also be branded as OnlineOpen and will draw attention to the fact that the paper can be downloaded for free via the journal website.

Any authors wishing to send their paper OnlineOpen will be required to complete the combined payment and copyright licence form.

Once complete this form should be sent to the Editorial Office along with the rest of the manuscript materials at the time of acceptance or as soon as possible after that (preferably within 24 hours to avoid any delays in processing). Prior to acceptance there is no requirement to inform an Editorial Office that you intend to publish your paper OnlineOpen if you do not wish to.

The copyright statement for OnlineOpen authors will read:

Ethical considerations
If the scientific project involves human subjects or experimental animals, authors must state in the manuscript that the protocol has been approved by the Ethics Committee of the institution within which the research work was undertaken. Experiments on live vertebrates or higher invertebrates must be demonstrated to be ethically acceptable and in accordance with institutional and national guidelines or regulations for laboratory animals. Any form of registration that may identify a patient must be excluded from the content of the paper. When clinical photographs of patients are submitted, consent by the patient must be obtained prior to submission of the article and is the responsibility of the author. If the manuscripts are reporting medical research involving human subjects, authors must include a statement confirming that informed consent was obtained from all subjects, according to the World Medical Association Declaration of Helsinki.

Publication ethics
Journal of Cellular and Molecular Medicine is a member of the UK Committee on Publication Ethics and subscribes to its recommendations (Committee on Publication Ethics [COPE]: guidelines on good publication practice, www.publicationethics.org.uk). Best Practice Guidelines on Publication Ethics are also available from http://www.blackwellpublishing.com/publicationethics/ (Graf C, Wager E, Bowman A, et al., Int J Clin Pract 2007; 61 [suppl 152]: 126). The Editors reserve the right to reject a paper on ethical grounds. All authors are responsible for adhering to guidelines on good publication practice.

Conflict of interest policy
The authors are responsible for recognizing and disclosing financial and other conflicts of interest related to their study or to the subject of their paper. The authors have to acknowledge in the manuscript all financial support for the research work and other financial or personal connections to the work. Any potential conflict of interest must be dealt with according to the Statement of the International Committee of Medical Journals.

Manuscripts should be typewritten on A4 format (210x297 mm), with double spacing, margins of 25 mm, on one side only, consecutively numbered. Times New Roman font, 12-point size, is required. The text of research manuscripts should be arranged in the following sections:

Title page, Abstract and key words, Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, Acknowledgements, References, Tables, Figure Legends and Figures.
All materials should comply with the Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals, prepared by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (http://www.icmje.org).

As a rule, a research article of about 3500 words, plus figures and tables, should not exceed 10 pages. Section titles should be typed capitalized. Each heading for subdivisions of the text should be clearly identified using different font types (e.g. bold, underlined). Use standard abbreviations. Any non-standard abbreviations (to be avoided if possible) should be explained in the text the first time they are used. Avoid abbreviations in the title. Quantities and units should be expressed in accordance with the recommendations of the International System of Units (Système International d'Unités).

Title page
The first page should carry the following information: the title of the article (concise and informative, not longer than 80-100 characters, including spaces and punctuation), authors' names and institutional affiliations, the name of the department(s) and institution(s) to which the work should be attributed. The author responsible for correspondence will be marked by an asterisk, and their full address, telephone/fax numbers, and e-mail address will be indicated.

Abstract and keywords
An abstract must accompany each paper and should not exceed 250 words. The abstract should follow the title page, and the authors need to be careful that it reflects the content of the article accurately. The abstract must clearly provide the background for the study and should state the study's objectives, methods used, main results, and principal conclusions. It should be easily understood without reference to the text. No other references are allowed. If necessary, include only few important values. Avoid reporting detailed statistics and using abbreviations. Following the abstract, a list of 3-10 keywords is essential for indexing purposes. In addition, please add for Reviews, a list of the main topics.

Units of measurement, symbols and abbreviations
Symbols for physical units should be those of the Système Internationale (SI) Units. Alternative or non-SI units may be used, but these must be defined at their first occurrence in the text.

Chemical and biochemical nomenclature should follow the Recommendations of the IUPAC-IUB Commission on Nomenclature. Enzymes, when first mentioned, should be written in full, followed by the IUB Enzyme Commission number. Approved names may be used and details may be obtained from the latest edition of Enzyme Nomenclature. For the expression of catalytic activity, use the International Federation of Clinical Chemistry methods for the measurement of catalytic concentration of enzymes. The producer should be specified for chemicals. Chemical structure must be specified, if laboratory code numbers are used. For drugs, use international non-proprietary (generic) names.

Acknowledgements
This section, placed after the Discussion, contains one or more statements that specify: contributions that need acknowledgment, but do not justify authorship; acknowledgment of technical help or of financial material support (specify the nature of the support); financial relationships that may pose a conflict of interest.

References
References should be numbered consecutively in the order in which they are first mentioned in the text. Identify references in text, tables, and legends by Arabic numerals in square brackets (e.g. [1], [2-6], etc.).
The reference list is a separate section at the end of the manuscript. Type each reference single-spaced, with one line space between references. All authors cited and only these must be indicated in the list. Use exactly the reference style and format as shown below. Each reference should contain names and initials of all authors. The titles of journals (font style italic) should be abbreviated according to Index Medicus. Inaccurate referencing may delay publication.
N.B. Reference citations must be according to the Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals, as stated by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors.

References in Articles
We recommend the use of a tool such as EndNote or Reference Manager for reference management and formatting.

EndNote reference styles can be searched for here: http://www.endnote.com/support/enstyles.asp

Reference Manager reference styles can be searched for here: http://www.refman.com/support/rmstyles.asp

Footnotes
Avoid footnotes. When essential, they are indicated in the text by symbols, typed at the foot of the appropriate page, e.g. the address of the author for correspondence (*), on the title page, or explanatory notes for tables.

Tables
Include tables in the file for upload. Use the table function of a word processor rather than tab and space. For postal submission type each table, double-spaced on a separate page. Do not submit tables as photographs. Number tables consecutively with arabic numerals and give each a short, descriptive heading. Give each column a short or abbreviated heading. Place explanatory matter in footnotes to the table, not in the heading. Explain in the footnotes all non-standard abbreviations used in the table. Omit internal horizontal and vertical lines. If data from another published or unpublished source are used, obtain permission and acknowledge fully. Tables should be self-explanatory and understandable without reference to the text of the article.

Figure Legends
Each figure should have a legend containing sufficient information to make the figure intelligible without reference to the text. Figure legends should be included in the file for upload. For postal submission, all the legends must be typed double-spaced on a separate page(s). If a figure has been published previously, acknowledge the original source and submit written permission from the copyright holder to reproduce it.

Figures
If submission of digital illustrations is not possible (see section below) then to ensure clear reproduction, it is preferred that illustrations are submitted as 11 x 17cm (5 x 7 inch) glossy prints unmounted and untrimmed. Prepare drawings and graphs with black India ink on white background, using no typewriting or computer print. Letters, numbers and symbols should be clear and even throughout and large enough to be legible when reduced for publication. Do not attempt to hand-letter line drawings and photographs.
If submitting by post, all figures must be submitted in triplicate and have a label pasted on the back indicating the figure number, the top of the figure, and the first author's name. Do not write directly on the back of the photographs or damage them by using paper clips. If photographs of persons are used, either the subjects must not be identifiable or written permission to use the photographs must accompany the manuscript.
The Editor will not return manuscripts. If the author(s) wishes to have the figure(s) from a rejected article returned, a self-addressed, stamped envelope must be provided.

Colour figures. The Journal encourages the publication of colour figures. The first two colour figures will be produced free of charge, and additional colour figures may be free to authors where the Editor and the Publisher are of the view that it is essential. In all other instances, authors will be asked to return a signed copy of the completed Colourwork Agreement Form to the Editorial Office before their manuscript is passed to the Publisher Colourwork Form. The Journal is pleased to allow authors to publish figures in colour free of charge in the online edition.

ON ACCEPTANCE: MANUSCRIPT SUBMISSION
On acceptance, an electronic version of the manuscript must be provided. Accepted manuscripts will be published from the Word file (not PDF) wherever practicable and therefore must be provided in this form. This reduces typesetting errors and speeds up publication. Authors must ensure that all sections of their paper, excluding figures, are presented in a single file, updated to incorporate all revisions. For postal submissions, a disk and hardcopy of the manuscript must be provided. The version on the disk must match the final hard copy. All accepted manuscripts must be accompanied by a signed Exclusive Licence Form or Online Open Form.

Text
Files should be formatted double-spaced with no hyphenation and automatic word-wrap (no hard returns within paragraphs). Please type your text consistently, e.g. take care to distinguish between '1' (one) and 'l' (lower-case L) and '0' (zero) and 'O' (capital O), etc.

Tables
Tables should be created using the table editor function of word processing software. Do not use graphics software to create tables.

Mathematics
In-line equations should be typed as text were possible. Graphics programs and 'equation editors' can also be used, and the output will be used were possible but displayed equations may occasionally be rekeyed by out typesetters.

Figures
On acceptance of a paper, please send us digital versions of your figures if at all possible. EPS and TIFF files are preferable for print reproduction. Please note that your paper will go through production more quickly if the figures do not have to be relabelled or redrawn.
Please ensure that electronic artwork is prepared such that, after reduction to fit across one or two columns or two-thirds width (80mm, 169mm or 110mm respectively) as required, all lettering will be clear and easy to read, i.e. no labels should be too large or too small. Avoid using tints if possible; if they are essential to the understanding of the figure, try to make them coarse. Always enclose hard copies of digitally supplied figures. No artwork for publication should be incorporated into the final accepted text files. Original drawings or photographs should be supplied for reproduction.
Full details of submission of manuscripts and artwork are available at http://www.blackwellpublishing.com/authors/prep_illust.asp.

PROOFS
The corresponding author will receive an email alert containing a link to a web site. A working e-mail address must therefore be provided for the corresponding author. The proof can be downloaded as a PDF (portable document format) file from this site. Acrobat Reader will be required in order to read this file. This software can be downloaded (free of charge) from the following web site:
http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html.
This will enable the file to be opened, read on screen and printed out in order for any corrections to be added. Further instructions will be sent with the proof. Hard copy proofs will be posted if no e-mail address is available. Excessive changes made by the author in the proofs, excluding typesetting errors, will be charged separately.

OFFPRINTS
Ten reprints of each article will be sent to the corresponding author free of charge.
Authors will also be provided with electronic offprints of their paper. Paper offprints may be ordered at prices quoted on the order form, which accompanies proofs, provided that the form is returned with the proofs. The cost is more if the order form arrives too late for the main print run. Offprints are normally dispatched within three weeks of publication of the issue in which the paper appears. Please contact the following if offprints do not arrive: C.O.S. Printers Pte Ltd., 9 Kian Teck Crescent, Singapore 628875; Fax: +65 6265 9074; Email: offprint@cosprinters.com. However, please note that offprints are sent by surface mail, so overseas orders may take up to six weeks to arrive. Electronic offprints are sent to the first author at his or her first email address on the title page of the paper, unless advised otherwise; therefore please ensure that the name, address and email of the receiving author are clearly indicated on the manuscript title page if he or she is not the first author of the paper.

ACCEPTED ARTICLES
Journal of Cellular and Molecular Medicine offers Accepted Articles for all articles. Accepted Articles is a Wiley Interscience service whereby peer reviewed, accepted articles are published online as and when they are ready, prior to their ultimate inclusion in a print or online issue and without having been copy-edited.
