About the journal
Metabolomics

Metabolomics publishes current research in the areas of: the development of various technology platforms for metabolomics, metabolite target analysis, metabolic profiling and metabolic fingerprinting; improvements in data preparation, storage, curation and analyses; comparative integrated studies with transcriptomics and proteomics including within a systems biology context; and the application of metabolomics within man, animals, plants and microbes. Metabolomics is a broad-based journal that is indispensable to those whose work has implications of near-term practical benefit.

Features of Metabolomics include:

-Wide-ranging and rigorously peer-reviewed research papers and reviews

-A Metabolomics comment section for responses from readers on articles published, conference announcements and reports, funding initiatives and other metabolomics topics

-Occasional special issues focusing on subjects of particular interest

Metabolomics  is the official journal of the Metabolomics Society (http://www.metabolomicssociety.org/).

Instructions to Authors

General

Metabolomics will publish a substantial share of the most significant current research in the areas of:
  • the development of various technology platforms for metabolomics, metabolite target analysis, metabolic profiling, and metabolic fingerprinting
  • improvements in data storage, curation and analyses
  • comparative integrated studies with transcriptomics and proteomics including within a systems biology context
  • and the application of metabolomics within man, animals, plants and microbes
Metabolomics will be a broad-based journal that is indispensable to those whose work has implications of near-term practical benefit.
Review articles, original articles, short communications, letters to the Editor and book reviews will be considered for publication. Please contact the Publisher for full details.

Online Manuscript Submission

Springer offers authors, editors and reviewers of Metabolomics the use of our fully web-enabled online manuscript submission and review system. To keep the review time as short as possible, we request authors to submit manuscripts online to the journal’s editorial office. Our online manuscript submission and review system offers authors the option to track the progress of the review process of manuscripts in real time.
The online manuscript submission and review system for Metabolomics offers easy and straightforward log-in and submission procedures.
This system supports a wide range of submission file formats:
for manuscripts - Word, WordPerfect, RTF, TXT, and LaTex;
for figures - TIFF, GIF, JPEG, EPS, PPT, and Postscript.
PDF is not an acceptable format.
NOTE: In case you encounter any difficulties while submitting your manuscript online, please get in touch with the responsible Editorial Assistant by clicking on "CONTACT US" from the tool bar.
Authors are requested to download the Consent to Publish and Transfer of Copyright form from the journal’s website. Please send a completed and duly signed form either by mail or fax to the Editorial Office of Metabolomics. Authors should still follow the regular instructions for authors when preparing their manuscripts (see below).

Style of Manuscripts

Manuscripts should be typed with double spacing on standard size paper. Spelling should conform to Webster’s International Dictionary and System International (SI) units should be used throughout. Abbreviations should be kept to a minimum and be defined at first mention. Generic names should be used for drugs (brand names may be inserted in parentheses).
The title page should include
  • a concise and descriptive title for the paper
  • the full name(s) of the author(s)
  • the institutional affiliation of each author
  • the name and address of the corresponding author (including e-mail address, telephone and fax numbers)
  • an abbreviated title
  • and any acknowledgment of financial or material support
This should be followed by the abstract page, summarizing in bold font 12, no more than 250 words the reason for the study, the major finding (with specific data if possible), and the principal conclusions, and providing 3-6 key words for indexing purposes.
Emphasis of headings should follow these font styles: Introduction, font 14 bold; subheading, font 12 bold, and sub-heading, font 12 italics. The text of the report should then proceed as follows:
Introduction
  • Describe the background of the investigation, citing only essential references, and state the aim(s) of the study.
Materials and Methods
  • Give sufficient detail for future repetition. Describe new methods in detail; providing references and brief descriptions for previously published methods. Research on human subjects should indicate that ethical approval was obtained.
Results and Discussion
  • Present data in a single form. Emphasis should be on clear and precise presentation of results and their significance in relation to the aim of the investigation. Review the results of the study in the light of previously published work.
Concluding Remarks
  • Give a brief conclusion of less than 200 words.
Acknowledgments
  • Detail contributions, including technical help or other assistance, requiring acknowledgment but not justifying authorship in less than 50 words.
References
References should appear alphabetically. The reference list must be double spaced and should include:
  • names and initials of all authors when there are six or fewer (when there are more than six authors, list the only first three followed by et al.)
  • full title of the article
  • journal title abbreviated according to Index Medicus
  • year
  • volume number
  • and page span
For reference cited from books, the chapter title should be
followed by
  • the names and initials of the editors
  • the book title
  • edition
  • place of publication
  • publisher
  • year
  • and page span
An Endnote style filter (Metabolomics.ens) is available.
References are to appear in Harvard style in text:
  • Jones (2003) or (Jones, 2003)
  • Jones and Smith (2004) or (Jones and Smith, 2004)
  • Jones et al. (2004), Jones and colleagues (2004) or (Jones et al., 2004)
  • Multiple ones separated by a ’;’

Only accepted papers should be referenced; all other material should be referred to in the text as ’in preparation,’ ’personal communication,’ or ’unpublished observations’ and should not be included in the reference list (see also Permissions). Authors are responsible for the accuracy of their references.

Style for Illustration

All tables and illustrations must be numbered and referred to in the text, with appropriate locations indicated in the text margin. Tables should be typed with double spacing with a descriptive title and, if appropriate, units of numerical measurements included in the column heading. All lettering should be large enough to permit legible reduction. Axes should be labeled clearly; any other lettering should be kept to a minimum. Magnifications should be shown with scale bars. Color art can be used without charge for the electronic edition of the journal but will appear in the printed version of the journal at the author's expense. The cost of color art in the print journal is $1150 per article.
