About the journal
Description

This journal establishes a dedicated channel for physicists, material scientists, chemists, engineers and computer scientists who are interested in photonic crystals and photonic band gaps. The Journal will help shed light on the latest developments in this growing field of science that will see the emergence of faster telecommunications and ultimately computers that use light instead of electrons to connect components. The Journal features mainly original research work in experiment, theory and applications.
The journal covers the following areas of research: physics, chemistry, engineering optoelectronics and computers science related to applications in photonic crystals and photonic band gaps. Papers suitable for publication in this journal cover topics such as ?Theory of photonic crystals and related micro- and nanophotonic materials•Investigation and characterization of photonic crystal properties including optical nonlinearities, photonic band gap effects, spontaneous emission, etc.?Fabrication of photonic structures and devices using various methods, including lithography, self-assembly, holography, etc.?Subwavelength optics of structured materials ?Metallic and metallo-dielectric photonic structures?Structures for Terahertz optics ?Plasmonics?Metamaterials and left-handed metamaterials•Photonic crystal fibers and "holey" fibers?Micro- and nanophotonic devices such as optical waveguides, switches, lasers, and other components of optical integrated circuits, ?Integration of photonic crystals?Micro-optical-electro-mechanical-systems (MOEMS)?Optical microcavities and photonic "dots"?Novel approaches to micro- and nanophotonics?Critical assessment of new application fields (light sources, lasers, biophotonics, detectors, optical components, atom and molecule confinement)
Instructions to Authors
Guide for Authors
Submission of papers Authors should submit their articles electronically directly to a member of the Board of Editors by using the online submission tool for Photonics and Nanostructures.
Professor T. Baba Yokohama National University 79-5 Tokiwadai Yokohama Hodogayaku 240-8501, Japan
Professor Henri Benisty Laboratoire de Physique de la Matiere Condensee Ecole Polytechnique F-91128 Palaiseau Cedex France
Professor Costas Soukoulis A505 Physics Iowa State University Ames, Iowa 50011 USA
The manuscript and copies of figures should be submitted in duplicate, together with one set of good quality figure material for production of the printed figures.
Manuscript preparation Manuscripts should be written in good English. They should be typed throughout with double line spacing and wide margins on numbered, single column pages. Authors in Japan kindly note that, upon request, Elsevier Japan will provide a list of people who can check and improve the English of an article before submission. Contact our Tokyo office: Elsevier Japan K.K., 1-9-15 Higashi Azabu, Minato-ku, Tokyo 106-0044, Japan; tel.: +81-3-5561-5032; fax: +81-3-5561-5045;jp.info@elsevier.com
The title page(s) should contain the article title, author(s) names and affiliations, the text of related footnotes and the text of the abstract. The author to whom the proofs should be sent must be indicated with her/his full postal address, telephone number, fax number and/or e-mail address. One to four classification codes (PACS-1998) and up to six keywords of the author's choice should be given below the abstract. Tables should be typed on separate sheets at the end of the manuscript. In addition to its serial number, each table should have a sufficiently detailed caption to explain the data displayed in it. Figures should be numbered and their captions listed together at the end of the manuscript.References in the text to other publications should numbered consecutively within square brackets and listed together at the head of the text. Formulae in the manuscript should be clearly written or typed with particular consideration given to characters that maybe misinterpreted. Unusual symbols should be explained in pencil in the margin.
Illustrations The publisher requires a set of good quality line figures and original photographs to produce the printed figures. Line drawings should be original laser printer or plotter output or drawn in black India ink, with careful lettering, large enough to remain legible after reduction for printing. Photographs should be originals, with somewhat more contrast than is required in the printed version. They should be unmounted. The topside of a photograph should be marked if necessary. Electronic Illustrations. For instructions for submitting electronic graphics visit: http://www.elsevier.com/artworkinstructions Colour figures can be printed in colour when they are judged by the Editor to be essential to the presentation. The publisher and the author will each bear part of the extra costs involved. Further information concerning colour illustrations and the cost to the author is available from the publisher.
After acceptance Page proofs are sent out to authors in order to check that no undetected errors have arisen in the typesetting or file conversion process. At the proof stage only printer's errors may be corrected. No changes in, or additions to, the edited manuscript will be accepted. Copyright transfer. In the course of the production process the authors will be asked to transfer the copyright of the article to the publisher. This transfer will ensure the widest possible dissemination of information.
Electronic manuscripts A disk containing the electronic version of the manuscript can be submitted together with the hard copies of the text and figures. It is the responsibility of the authors to ensure that the version on disk exactly matches the hard copies. No deviations from the version accepted for publication are permissible without the prior and explicit approval by the Editor. LaTeX articles and articles prepared with any of the well known word processors, can be handled by the publisher. The Elsevier LaTeX Package (including detailed instructions) can be obtained using anonymous ftp from the Comprehensive TeX Archive Network (CTAN), or from the publisher.
Author benefits No page charges. Publishing in Photonics and Nanostructures is free. Free offprints. The corresponding author will be provided with a PDF file of the article via e-mail. The PDF file is a watermarked version of the published article and includes a cover sheet with the journal cover image and a disclaimer outlining the terms and conditions of use. Discount. Contributors to Elsevier journals are entitled to a 30% discount on all Elsevier books.
