About the journal
Description
The journal is intended to present within a single forum all of the developments in the field of multi-sensor, multi-source information fusion and thereby promote the synergism among the many disciplines that are contributing to its growth. The journal is being groomed as the premier vehicle for disseminating information on all aspects of research and development in the field of information fusion. Articles are expected to emphasize one or more of the three facets: architectures, algorithms, and applications. Papers dealing with fundamental theoretical analyses as well as those demonstrating their application to real-world problems will be welcome. The journal publishes original papers, letters to the Editors and from time to time invited review articles, in all areas related to the information fusion arena including, but not limited to, the following suggested topics:
data, feature, decision, and multilevel fusion
multilook temporal fusion
multi-sensor, multi-source fusion system architectures
adaptive and self-improving fusion system architectures
neurophysiologically-motivated architectures and applications
active, passive, and mixed sensor suites
multisensor and distributed sensor system design
fusion learning in imperfect, imprecise and incomplete environments
intelligent techniques for fusion processing
system design and algorithmic issues
computational resources optimization
special purpose hardware dedicated to fusion applications
mining remotely sensed multi-spectral/hyper-spectral image data bases
applications such as robotics, space, medicine, economics, management information systems
real-world issues, such as computational demands, real-time constraints.

Instructions to Authors
Guide for Authors
Please follow these instructions carefully to ensure that the review and publication of your paper is as swift and efficient as possible. These notes may be copied freely. Information Fusion publishes original papers, letters to the Editor and from time to time invited review articles, in all areas related to information fusion.
Submission of manuscripts
On-line submission
Authors are strongly encouraged to submit their papers electronically by using online manuscript submission at  http://www.elsevier.com/locate/guidepublication. This website permits authors to upload their manuscript and its associated artwork. An electronic (PDF) proof is generated and the reviewing process is carried out using PDF. It is crucial that all graphical and tabular elements be placed within the text, so that the PDF is suitable for reviewing. This will also allow the preferred position of placement to be indicated, however please note that due to journal conventions, it may not be possible to meet all requirements for placement of artwork. Moreover, the PDF file may be edited after acceptance to follow journal standards. Authors and editors send and receive all correspondence by email via the website and no paper correspondence is performed.
The Journal works to preserve anonymity of reviewers by adopting the standard blind-review process. Where feasible, if authors so choose and request, we will facilitate two-way anonymity (double-blind review) as well. For this to be possible, the authors should remove from the manuscript, in their initial submission, their names, affiliations, as well as all other related or identifying information such as acknowledgments, and submit such information as a separate file.
However, if the submitted manuscript is related to earlier published papers (in Journals and/or conference/workshop proceedings) of one or more of the current authors, then these references should definitely be included in the manuscript and cited within the manuscript where necessary to avoid any duplication of the material already presented and/or published elsewhere. Accordingly, in such cases, we will not implement the double-blind review process.
Hard-copy submission
Should you prefer not to use the on-line submission tool, then please carefully read the following instructions. For the initial submission, Authors should submit one electronic copy (PDF Portable Document Format preferred) and four hard copies of their manuscripts, one complete set of original illustrations and three copies to the Editor. The author's name, all related information, and the other identifying information such as acknowledgments should be submitted as a separate file from the manuscript itself to facilitate two-way anonymity between the authors and reviewers.
For the submission of the final version, two hard copies (one original and one copy) - and two soft copies on diskettes or CD containing the electronic version of their manuscript (in WORD processor compatible format - see under section "Preparation of electronic files") are required (express mail preferred). It is important that the electronic file and the accepted printout are identical. The following information is required: e-mail address, telephone number, fax number, computer type used (PC/Mac), Word processing package.

Journal policy
The language of submission is English. Papers are submitted on the understanding that the subject matter has not been previously published and is not being submitted elsewhere. Authors should confirm the following in their submittal letter: "The manuscript or its equivalent has not been previously published and is not currently under such consideration elsewhere." Authors must accept full responsibility for the factual accuracy of the data presented and should obtain any authorization necessary for publication. All papers are sent to three referees who advise the Editor on the matter of acceptance in accordance with the high standards required. Referee names are not disclosed, but their views are forwarded by the Editor to the authors for consideration.
Manuscript preparation
General requirements: Manuscripts must be layed out double-spaced, on one side of the page only, using black type. Pages must be numbered. The manuscript must start with a title page containing the following information: Title, Authors, Affiliations, and the corresponding author's full mailing address, phone and fax numbers and e-mail address. Some flexibility of presentation will be allowed but authors are urged to arrange the subject matter clearly under such headings as: Title, Abstract, Keywords, Introduction, Theoretical analysis, Experimental investigations, Discussion of results, Conclusions, References, Tables, Figures, and other illustrations, and a list of captions for these.
For a rough estimate of the final length of the printed article authors should count 850 words per full two-column page and four illustrations per page.
Title
The title should be brief, specific and rich in informative words; it should not contain any literature references or uncommon abbreviations.
Authors and affiliations
Where possible, supply given names, middle initials and family names for complete identification. Use superscript lower case letters to indicate different addresses, which should be as detailed as possible, and must include the country name. The corresponding author should be indicated with an asterisk, and contact details given. Information relating to other authors (e.g. present addresses) should be placed in numbered footnotes.
Abstract:
Authors must include a short abstract that states briefly the purpose of the research, the principal results and major conclusions. References should not be mentioned in the abstract unless full details are given.
Keywords:
Please supply five to six keywords that best describe your work.
Text:
Text should be subdivided in the simplest possible way consistent with clarity. Headings and subheadings should reflect the relative importance of the sections, and all headings should be numbered. Ensure that all tables, figures and schemes are cited in the text in numerical order. Abbreviations should be used consistently throughout the text, and all non-standard abbreviations should be defined on first usage. The experimental section should be as concise as possible, while containing all the information necessary to guarantee reproducibility.
Manuscript size (only in case of hard-copy submission):
Your hardcopy should be printed in "letter"(8 1/2 x 11 inch) paper size.
References:
In the text references should be indicated by Arabic numerals in square brackets, which run consecutively through the paper; ensure that all references are cited in the text and vice versa. The reference list should contain only literature references; other information (e.g. experimental details) should be placed either within the body of the text, or as a footnote to the text. Each reference should contain only one literature citation. Authors are expected to check the original source reference for accuracy.
No references to unpublished material are allowed. Reference to material accepted for publication may be allowed if at least the name of the journal and year of expected publication are included. No references to classified reports or reports of restricted distribution, internal company reports, etc. are permitted.
In the reference list, periodicals [1], books [2] and edited books [3] should be cited in accordance with the following examples:
1. J. Harley, Y. Huang, H. Bau, J. N. Zemel, Gas flow in microchannels, J. Fluid Mech., 284, (1995), 257-274.
2. B. Massey, Mechanics of Fluids, 6th ed., Van Nostrand, London, UK, 1989.

References to published proceedings or abstracts of conferences should be given, together with the location and date of the meeting, e.g.
4. K. Pong, C. Ho, J. Liu, Y. Tai, Non-linear pressure distribution in uniform microchannels, in: Appl. Microfabrication to Fluid Mechanics, ASME Winter Annu. Meet., Chicago, IL, Nov. 1994, pp. 51-56.
Each reference must be complete, thus the use of ibid., idem., et al., etc. is not permitted.
Footnotes:
Footnotes should appear at the bottom of the appropriate page and be indicated by superscript numbers: 1, 2, 3 etc.
Tables
All tables should be cited in the text, and numbered in order of appearance with Arabic numerals. The caption should appear on the line below the table number, e.g.
Table 1
This is the table caption
All table columns should have a brief explanatory heading and, where appropriate, units of measurement. Vertical lines should not be used. Footnotes to tables should be typed below the table, each on a separate line, and should be referred to by superscript letters.
Artwork
Figures, schemes and equations must be cited in the text and numbered in order of appearance with Arabic numerals; fixed graphics should be placed at a particular position in the text but not specifically referenced. There is no need to specify reductions for figures; however, figures will generally be reduced in size before printing and any lettering should be sufficiently large (minimum height, 3-5 mm) to remain legible. Artwork will not be enlarged. Captions should not be included as part of the graphic; instead all captions should be supplied at the end of the text. All graphics must be labelled with the figure or scheme number, and the corresponding author's name. Where possible, please also supply graphics in electronic format, TIFF (Tagged Image File Format) or EPS (Encapsulated PostScript).
Graphics and photographs should not be embedded in the text of the manuscript. Drawings made in Microsoft Word or WordPerfect, or embedded in the text file, generally have too low a resolution.
Photographs: One set of original photographs should be supplied; please note that photocopies of photographs are not acceptable.
Colour:
Illustrations can be printed in colour when they are judged by the Editor to be essential to the presentation. The Publisher and author will each bear part of the extra costs involved. The charge to be passed on to authors of articles containing colour figures is EUR 636 (approx. USD 625) for the first page containing colour and EUR 458 (approx. USD 450) for each additional page containing colour. Authors will be billed in euro; the dollar price is for guidance only and is based on the exchange rate at the time of the preparation of these instructions. Authors who pay for colour illustrations will receive a total of 100 free Reprints. Colour figures should be supplied in hard copy format, and if possible also in electronic format as JPEG files (minimum 300 dots per inch).
Journal conventions
Please use the International Systems of Units, except where custom or clarity dictate other units;
Leave a blank line between each paragraph and between each entry in the list of bibliographic references.
If authors depart from these recommendations, articles may be returned for correction or corrected in the editorial office. In the latter case, no responsibility for errors can be assumed.
Preparation of electronic files (in case of hard-copy submission only)
Articles prepared using any of the more popular word-processing packages are acceptable but please note the following points:
Submissions should be made on a double-density or high-density 3.5" disk.
The word-processor format, file name(s), and the title and authors of the article must be indicated.
The electronic files must always be accompanied by a hard-copy version of the article and the content of the two must be identical.
The text in the electronic files must be the same as that of the final refereed, revised manuscript.
Files for either IBM PC compatibles or Apple Macintosh are preferred. If you can provide either of these, our preference is for the former.
The article must be saved in the native format of the word processor used, e.g. WordPerfect, Microsoft Word, etc.
Although most popular word processor file formats are acceptable, we cannot guarantee the usability of all formats. If the files you send us prove to be unusable, we will publish your article from the hard copy.
Please do not send ASCII files as relevant data may be lost.
There is no need to spend time formatting your article so that the printout is visually attractive (e.g. by making headings bold or creating a page layout with figures), as most formatting instructions will be removed upon processing.
Tables should preferably be placed in the same electronic file as the text.
Copyright guidelines
All authors must sign the "Transfer of Copyright" agreement before the article can be published. This transfer agreement enables Elsevier to protect the copyrighted material for the authors, but does not relinquish the author's proprietary rights. The copyright transfer covers the exclusive rights to reproduce and distribute the article, including reprints, photographic reproductions, microfilm or any other reproductions of similar nature and translations, and includes the right to adapt the article for use in conjunction with computer systems and programs, including reproduction or publication in machine-readable form and incorporation in retrieval systems. Authors are responsible for obtaining from the copyright holder permission to reproduce any figures for which copyright exists.
Authors are responsible for obtaining appropriate clearance from their organisation and/or government, as applicable, prior to submission of a manuscript. The editor and publisher cannot be held responsible for any further dissemination, which occurs once the review process has commenced.
Proofs
Authors will receive a proof, which they are requested to correct and return as soon as possible, preferably by fax. No new material may be inserted in the text at the time of proof-reading. A Note added in proof must be dated and the author must have requested the Editor's approval.
