Maywood, Illinois
Telephone: (708) 327-3438

Purpose
Thegoal of the Journal of Burn Care & Research is to inform members of the burn team of significant advances in burn research, education, delivery of acute care, rehabilitation, and prevention. Authors are invited to submit original articles on any aspect of burn care or rehabilitation for publication. Authors are encouraged to submit manuscripts online through the Journal’s Web site at http://jbcr.edmgr.com.

Policy
Views expressed in the Journal represent the opinions of the author(s) and do not necessarily reflect the official policy of the institution with which the author is affiliated, the American Burn Association, the Editor-in-Chief, or the publisher, Lippincott Williams & Wilkins. All the aforementioned disclaim any responsibility or liability for such material. None of the aforementioned parties guarantees, warrants, or endorses any product or service advertised in this publication, neither do they guarantee any claim made by the manufacturer of such a product or service.

In accordance with the Copyright Act of 1976, all manuscripts must be accompanied by the following statement, signed by all authors: "The undersigned authors transfer all copyright ownership of the manuscript [title of article] to the American Burn Association in the event the work is published. The undersigned authors warrant that the article is original, does not infringe on any copyright or proprietary right of any third party, is not under consideration by another journal, and has not been previously published. The final manuscript has been read, and each author’s contribution has been approved by the appropriate author." Authors will be consulted, when possible, regarding republication of their material.

Accepted manuscripts become the full property of the Journal of Burn Care & Research and may not be published elsewhere without the written consent of the publisher.

Manuscripts must be written in English. Original articles, editorials, historical and current reviews, case reports, and descriptions of clinical care, rehabilitation, and surgical techniques are sought. It is understood that the submitted papers have not been previously published.

Readers are urged to respond to articles and to share ideas about burn care. Editors reserve the right to edit letters without changing meaning. All letters must be signed; no anonymous correspondence will be published.

Manuscript Preparation and Submission
Effective September 1, 2005, all manuscripts must be submitted online through the Journal’s Web site at https:// www.editorialmanager.com/jbcr/. The information on this Web site will guide you through the Editorial Manager system and provide you with detailed submission instructions to complete your online manuscript submission.

Patient Anonymity and Informed Consent: It is the author’s responsibility to ensure that a patient’s anonymity be carefully protected and to verify that any experimental investigation with human subjects reported in the manuscript was performed with informed consent and following all the guidelines for experimental investigation with human subjects required by the institution(s) with which all the authors are affiliated. A signed release is required for any photograph of a recognizable subject and must be submitted with the manuscript.

Copyright/Permissions, Informed Consent, and Human Experimental Work: Authors must submit written permission from the copyright owner (usually the publisher) to use direct quotations, tables, or illustrations. Any permissions fees that might be required by the copyright owner are the responsibility of the authors requesting use of the borrowed material, not the responsibility of Lippincott Williams & Wilkins. A signed release is required for any photograph of a recognizable subject. If experimental work involving human subjects is presented, it should be indicated in the manuscript that informed consent was obtained, and a copy of the consent form should be forwarded with the manuscript. Releases with original signatures must be mailed to the editorial office.

All authors must sign a copy of the Journal’s "Authorship Responsibility, Financial Disclosure, and Copyright Transfer" form, which can be found at the Journal’s Web site, https://www.editorialmanager.com/jbcr/. Send the signed form when submitting the final manuscript online or fax it to the Editorial Office at (708) 327-2852.

Compliance with NIH and Other Research Funding Agency Accessibility Requirements
A number of research funding agencies now require or request authors to submit the post-print (the article after peer review and acceptance but not the final published article) to a repository that is accessible online by all without charge. As a service to our authors, LWW will identify to the National Library of Medicine (NLM) articles that require deposit and will transmit the post-print of an article based on research funded in whole or in part by the National Institutes of Health, Wellcome Trust, Howard Hughes Medical Institute, or other funding agencies to PubMed Central. The revised Copyright Transfer Agreement provides the mechanism.

Permissions: Authors must submit written permission from the copyright owner (usually the publisher) to use direct quotations, tables, or illustrations that have appeared in copyrighted form, along with complete details about the source. Any permissions fees that might be required by the copyright owner are the responsibility of the authors requesting use of the borrowed material, not the responsibility of Lippincott Williams & Wilkins.

Preparation of Manuscript: Manuscripts should have the following parts and those that do not adhere to these instructions will be returned to the corresponding author for technical revision.

Title Page: Include the following on the title page: (a) complete manuscript title; (b) all authors?full names, highest academic degrees, and affiliations; (c) name and address for correspondence, including fax number, telephone number, and E-mail address; (d) address for reprints if different from that of the corresponding author; and (e) sources of support that require acknowledgment.

The title page must also include disclosure of funding received for this work from any of the following organizations: National Institutes of Health (NIH); Wellcome Trust; Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI); and other(s).

Blinded Title Page: Include on this page only the complete manuscript title. No author or institutional information identifying the authors or supporting institution should appear on this page. This title page will be the one sent with the manuscript to the reviewers.

Structured Abstract: This section is limited to 250 words. It must have four parts: (1) Objective; (2) Methods; (3) Results; and (4) Conclusions. It must be factual and concise. Do not use abbreviations and acronyms.

Key Words: List three to five key words or phrases. Abbreviations and acronyms are not permitted.

Text: Organize the manuscript into Journal-specific main headings: title page, blinded title page, abstract, and key words page, introduction, methods, results, discussions, acknowledgments, references, tables, and figure legends. All direct references to the parent institutions or specific individuals involved in the project (except for solicited papers) must be removed from the text of the manuscript. Define abbreviations at first mention in text and in each table and figure. Use generic names, whenever possible. If a brand name is cited, supply the manufacturer’s name and city, state/country. Report all forms of support, including pharmaceutical and industry support, in a footnote. Acknowledge all other forms of assistance, excluding clerical and secretarial, in an Acknowledgments paragraph.

Abbreviations: For a list of standard abbreviations, consult the Council of Biology Editors Style Guide (available from the Council of Science Editors, 9650 Rockville Pike, Bethesda, MD 20814) or other standard sources. Write out the full term for each abbreviation at its first use, unless it is a standard unit of measure.

References: The authors are responsible for the accuracy of the references. List the references (double-spaced) at the end of the manuscript. Cite references in text in the order of appearance. Incorporate unpublished data, such as papers submitted but not yet accepted for publication or personal communications, in parentheses in the text. If there are more than three authors, name only the first three authors and then use et al. Refer to the List of Journals Indexed in Index Medicus for abbreviations of journal names, or access the list at http://www.nlm.nih.gov/tsd/serials/ lji.html.

Figures: Digital art should be created/scanned and saved and submitted as a TIFF (tagged image file format), an EPS (encapsulated postscript) file, or a PPT (Power Point) file. —Electronic photographs—radiographs, CT scans, and so on and scanned images must have a resolution of at least 300 dpi (dots per inch). Line art must have a resolution of at least 1200 dpi. If fonts are used in the artwork, they must be converted to paths or outlines or they must be embedded in the files. Color images must be created/scanned and saved and submitted as CMYK files. If you do not have the capability to create CMYK files, please disregard this step. Indicate in your cover letter that you are unable to produce CMYK files. Cite figures consecutively in the text, and number them in the order in which they are discussed.

Detailed Figure Instructions: For a step-by-step guide for submitting Digital Art, please visit www.lwwonline.com. Click "For Authors" then click "Artwork" in the menu to the right. Visit the "Digital Art Checklist" and "5 Steps for Creating Digital Artwork" for specific guidelines.

Figure Legends: Legends must be submitted for all figures. They should be brief and specific, and they should appear on a separate manuscript page after the references. Use scale markers in the image for electron micrographs, and indicate the type of stain used.

Color Figures: The Journal will consider publishing a limited number of color figures that enhance an article. The Journal’s editors will let the author know whether the Journal will cover the cost of color reproduction if an author chooses to submit color art with a manuscript.

Tables: Create tables using the table creating and editing feature of the word processing software (ie, Microsoft Word). Do not use Excel or comparable spreadsheet programs. Group all tables at the end of the manuscript, or supply them together in a separate file. Cite tables consecutively in the text, and number them in that order. Key each on a separate sheet, and include the table title, appropriate column heads, and explanatory legends (including definitions of any abbreviations used). Do not embed tables within the body of the manuscript. They should be self-explanatory and should supplement, rather than duplicate, the material in the text.

Style: Pattern manuscript style after the American Medical Association Manual of Style (9th edition). Stedman’s Medical Dictionary (27th edition) and Merriam Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary (10th edition) should be used as standard references. Refer to drugs and therapeutic agents by their accepted generic or chemical names, and do not abbreviate them. Use code numbers only when a generic name is not yet available. In that case, supply the chemical name and a figure giving the chemical structure of the drug. Capitalize the trade names of drugs and place them in parentheses after the generic names, only when necessary. To comply with trademark law, include the name and location (city and state in the U.S.; city and country outside the U.S.) of the manufacturer of any drug, supply, or equipment mentioned in the manuscript. Use the metric system to express units of measure and degrees Celsius to express temperatures, and use SI units rather than conventional units.

After Acceptance Page Proofs and Corrections: Corresponding authors will receive electronic page proofs to check the copyedited and typeset article before publication. Portable document format (PDF) files of the typeset pages and supporting documents (eg, reprint order form) will be sent to the corresponding author by E-mail. Complete instructions will be provided with the E-mail for downloading and printing the files and for faxing the corrected pages to the publisher. Those authors without an E-mail address will receive traditional page proofs. It is the author’s responsibility to ensure that there are no errors in the proofs. Changes that have been made to conform to Journal style should be allowed to stand if they do not alter the authors?meaning. Authors may be charged for alterations to the proofs beyond those required to correct errors or to answer queries. Proofs must be checked carefully and corrections faxed within 48 hours of receipt, as requested in the cover letter accompanying the page proofs.

Reprints: Authors will receive a reprint order form and a price list with the page proofs. Reprint requests should be faxed to the publisher with the corrected proofs, if possible. Reprints are normally shipped 6 to 8 weeks after publication of the issue in which the item appears. Contact the Reprint Department, Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 351 W. Camden Street, Baltimore, MD 21201; Fax: (410) 528-4434; E-mail: reprints@lww.com with any questions.

Publisher's Contact: Send corrected page proofs and any other related materials to Catherine L. Mahon, Journal of Burn Care & Research, Telephone: (410) 528-8564; Fax: 443-451-8157; E-mail: CMAHON@LWW.COM; Mailing Address: Journal Editing & Production, Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 351 W. Camden St., Baltimore, MD 21201-2436.

CONSENSUS STATEMENT ON SUBMISSION AND PUBLICATION OF MANUSCRIPTS
This Consensus Statement on Submission and Publication of Manuscripts is an outgrowth of the work done by the Surgical Journal Editors Group.

Duplicate Submission and Publication
In general, if a manuscript has been peer-reviewed and published, any subsequent publication is duplication. Exceptions to this general rule may be as follows: a) Prior publication in meeting program abstract booklets or expanded abstracts such as those published by the Surgical Forum of the American College of Surgeons or Transplantation Proceedings. However, these must be referenced in the final manuscript. b) A manuscript that extends an original database (a good rule might be expansion by 50% or more) or that analyzes the original database in a different way to prove or disprove a different hypothesis. Previous manuscripts reporting the original database must, however, be referenced. c) Manuscripts that have been published originally in non-English language journals, provided that the prior publication is clearly indicated on the English language submission and referenced in the manuscript. In some circumstances, permission to publish may need to be obtained from the non-English language journal.

For example, any submission duplicating material previous published in full in "Proceedings" or book chapters is considered duplicate unless the exceptions in (a) above apply. Similarly, manuscripts dealing with subgroups of data (i.e., patients) that have previously been analyzed, discussed, and published as a larger group are considered duplicate unless (b) above applies.

The Internet raises special concerns. If data have previously appeared on the Internet, submission of that data for publication is considered duplication. If Internet publication follows journal publication, the journal publication should be clearly referenced. Some journals may provide early Internet publication of accepted peer-reviewed papers that are subsequently published in the journal. This does not constitute duplication if both manuscripts are identical and covered by the same single copyright.

Fraudulent Publication
The following activities are examples of fraudulent publication practices: a) Willful and knowing submission of false data for publication. b) Submission of data from sources not the author’s (or authors? own. c) Falsely certifying that the submitted work is original and has not been submitted to, or accepted by, another journal. d) Sponsoring or vouching for a manuscript containing data over which the sponsor has no control or knowledge. e) Allowing one’s name to appear as an author without having contributed significantly to the study. f) Adding an author’s name to a manuscript to which he/she has not contributed, reviewed, or agreed to in its current form. g) Flagrant omission of reference to work of other investigators, which established their priority. h) Falsification of any item on the copyright form. i) Failure to disclose potential conflict of interest with a sponsoring agency. While not intended as an all-inclusive document, these examples and guidelines should alert authors to potential problems that should be avoided when they are considering submission of a manuscript to a peer-reviewed journal.
