Instructions to Authors

Manuscript Submission

Contrast Media & Molecular Imaging [CMMI} operates an online submission and peer review system that allows authors to submit articles online and track their progress via a web interface. Please read the remainder of these instructions to authors and then click http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/cmmi to navigate to the Contrast Media & Molecular Imaging online submission site. IMPORTANT: Please check whether you already have an account in the system before trying to create a new one. If you have reviewed or authored for the journal in the past year it is likely that you will have had an account created.

All papers must be submitted via the online system.

File Types

Preferred formats for the text and tables of your manuscript are .doc, .rtf., .ppt, .xls. We are able to use files produced by most word processing packages, but prefer them in Word or WordPerfect format. LaTex files may be submitted provided that an .eps or .pdf file is provided in addition to the source files. Figures may be provided in .tiff or .eps format.

Please note: This journal does not accept Microsoft Word 2007 documents at this time. Please use Word's "Save As" option to save your document as a .doc file type. If you try to upload a Word 2007 document in Manuscript Central you will be prompted to save .docx files as.doc files.

Initial Submission

NON-LATEX USERS: Upload your manuscript files. At this stage, further source files do not need to be uploaded. LATEX USERS: For reviewing purposes you should upload a single .pdf that you have generated from your source files. You must use the File Designation “Main Document?from the dropdown box.

Revision Submission

NON-LATEX USERS: Editable source files must be uploaded at this stage. Tables must be on separate pages after the reference list, and not be incorporated into the main text. Figures should be uploaded as separate figure files. LATEX USERS: When submitting your revision you must still upload a single .pdf that you have generated from your now revised source files. You must use the File Designation “Main Document?from the dropdown box. In addition you must upload your TeX source files. For all your source files you must use the File Designation “Supplemental Material not for review? Previous versions of uploaded documents must be deleted.

If your manuscript is accepted for publication we will use the files you upload to typeset your article within a totally digital workflow.

Copyright and Permissions

Authors must sign, scan and upload to the online system:

  • a Copyright Transfer Agreement with original signature(s) ?without this we are unable to accept the submission; and
  • permission grants ?if the manuscript contains extracts, including illustrations, from other copyright works (including material from on-line or intranet sources) it is the author’s responsibility to obtain written permission from the owners of the publishing rights to reproduce such extracts using the Wiley Permission Request Form.

The Copyright Transfer Form and Permissions Form should be uploaded as “Supplementary files not for review?with the online submission of your article.

If you do not have access to a scanner, further instructions will be given to you after acceptance of the manuscript.

To enable the publisher to disseminate the author’s work to the fullest extent, the author must sign a Copyright Transfer Agreement, transferring copyright in the article from the author to the publisher, and submit the original signed agreement with the article presented for publication. A copy of the agreement to be used (which may be photocopied) can be found in the first issue of the year on the Wiley Interscience website and through links in the online submission system. Copies may also be obtained from the journal editors or publisher.

Submission of a manuscript will be held to imply that it contains original unpublished work and is not being submitted for publication elsewhere at the same time. Submitted material will not be returned to the author, unless specifically requested.

Manuscript Style

The language of the journal is English. Non-English speaking authors who do not have a good command of English are advised to seek assistance from someone who has. Authors in Japan please note: Wiley-Japan can provide authors in Japan with a list of recommended services to check and improve the English in the papers before submission. Please contact Masayo Kobayashi in the Wiley-Japan office by fax (+81 (0) 33556 9763) or e-mail (editorial@wiley.co.jp) for more information, stating which Wiley journal you wish to submit to.

12-point type in one of the standard fonts: Times, Helvetica, or Courier is preferred. All submissions, including book reviews, must have a title, be double-line spaced and have a margin of 3cm all round. Tables must be on separate pages after the reference list, and not be incorporated into the main text. Figures should be uploaded as separate figure files.

Include on the title page the full title of the paper, a short title of up to 50 characters and the names and affiliations of all authors. Give the full address, including e-mail, telephone and fax, of the author who is to check the proofs. Give the name(s) of any sponsor(s) of the research contained in the paper, along with grant number(s). Authors of Review Articles should also include CVs and photos for all contributors.

Supply the following material for the Graphical Abstract on a separate page: the full title, the names of the authors (with the corresponding author indicated by an asterisk), a short abstract of not more than 80 words or 3 sentances of text summarising the key findings presented in the paper, and one figure. Summarising text and figure should fit into a box no more than 60 mm high and 105 mm long.

Categories of Contributions

Review Articles

Review articles deal with topics of current interest in all relevant areas of contrast media development and molecular imaging. Rather than an assemblage of detailed information with a complete literature survey, a critically selected treatment of the material is desired; unsolved problems and possible developments should also be discussed. Although review articles are generally written upon invitation of the editor, unsolicited manuscripts are also welcome provided they are in keeping with the character of the journal.

Reviews should be divided into numbered sections. Cross-references in the text should also use these section numbers. The review starts with a lead-in (ca. 1000 characters, no references). This text should not be a mere summary but rather should arouse the readers' interest. The first section of the review article itself, the Introduction, should primarily introduce the non-specialist to the subject in as clear a way as possible. A review should conclude with a section entitled Summary and Outlook, in which the achievements of and new challenges for the subject are presented succinctly. In addition, biographical sketches (maximum length 600 characters) and portrait-quality black-and-white photographs of the correspondence authors should be submitted with your revised manuscript.

A Review manuscript should consist of a maximum of 50 double-spaced pages of text, footnotes, literature citations, tables, and legends, plus formulas, schemes, and figures in a number appropriate to the text and topic. If a longer article is planned, the agreement of the editor should be sought as early as possible.

Personal Reviews

The Authors concentrate on progress made with their own research group. Otherwise the same principles apply as outlined above.

Full Papers

Full Papers must either be of current general interest or of great significance to a more specialised readership. They are peer-reviewed and report details of studies that have not been published previously, except in the form of a preliminary communication (reprint requested). Manuscripts should be between 15 and 20 pages in length (double spaced), and be divided into sections in the following order: introduction, results, discussion, conclusions, experimental, references. A short abstract and a maximum of eight keywords should be given at the top of the manuscript.

Communications

Communications are unsolicited, peer-reviewed short reports of outstanding novel findings which also have important and general implications for specialists working in other fields. The first paragraph should summarise the reasons for undertaking the work and the main conclusions which can be drawn. The final paragraph should summarise the major conclusions of the paper. An experimental section appropriate to the length of the manuscript should be included before the reference section, however, the submission of Supporting Information is encouraged when wishing to present a large>quantity of experimental data or information regarding synthetic procedures. Manuscripts should be no longer than 6 - 8 double-spaced pages of text (ca. 12000 characters); formulas and figures may also be added. The essential findings presented in a Communication or significant parts of them may not already have appeared in print or in electronic online systems (for example, in reviews, proceedings, or preprints).

Highlights

Highlights describe very important new results of original research, in general given by a third person, with a view to instruct and to highlight their significance. The results should be presented clearly, but as succinctly as possible, without the comprehensive details required for an original article. Highlights should be not more than 6 - 8 double-spaced pages of text and include only essential formulas andfigures as well as a minimal number of references.

Commentaries and Correspondence

Commentaries reflect on developments of contrast media and molecular imaging in general, Correspondence comment on publications in Contrast Media & Molecular Imaging. Both type of papers are welcome if they contribute to the scientific discussion. The authors of the publications the Correspondence refer to will have the opportunity to reply.

Reviews of Books and Websites

Reviews of books and websites are written on invitation. Nevertheless, suggestions for books and websites to be reviewed and for reviewers are welcome. Publishers should send brochures or (better) books directly to the Editors-in-Chief. An informative book review should provide answers to the following questions: Has the area of research covered in the book been the focus of recent research efforts, or does the book provide a fresh look at an already established area? Does the book have other merits, or is it unnecessary? Are the different aspects of the book's topic appropriately weighted What benefits does the book offer to different types of readers? Similar aspects hold for reviews of websites.

Reference style

References should be cited in the text by number within square brackets and listed at the end of the paper in the order in which they appear in the text. All references must be complete and accurate. If necessary, cite unpublished or personal work in the text, but do not include it in the reference list. Where possible the DOI for the reference should be included at the end of the reference. Online citations should include date of access. References should be listed in the following style:

  • Saeed N. Magnetic resonance image segmentation using pattern recognition, and applied to image registration and quantitation. NMR Biomed. 1998; 11: 157-167.
  • Gillies RJ, Alger JR, den Hollander JA, Shulman, RG. Intracellular pH measured by NMR: methods and results. In Intracellular pH: Its Measurement, Regulation and Utilisation in Cellular Functions, Nuccitelli R, Deamer DW (eds). Alan R Liss: New York, 1982; 79-104.

Illustrations

Upload each figure as a separate file in either .tiff or .eps format, with the figure number and the top of the figure indicated. Compound figures e.g. 1a, b, c should be uploaded as one figure. Tints are not acceptable. Lettering must be of a reasonable size that would still be clearly legible upon reduction, and consistent within each figure and set of figures. Where a key to symbols is required, please include this in the artwork itself, not in the figure legend. All illustrations must be supplied at the correct resolution:

  • Black and white and colour photos ?300 dpi
  • Graphs, drawings etc ?800 dpi preferred; 600 dpi minimum
  • Combinations of photos and drawings (black and white and colour) ?500 dpi

When considered necessary by the Editors, two colour illustrations per article will be printed free of charge. The cost of additional colour illustrations printed in the journal will be charged to the author, with the exception of reviews, where all costs for colour illustrations will be waived. If colour illustrations are supplied electronically in one of the formats specified earlier, they may be used in the PDF of the article at no cost to the author, even if this illustration was printed in black and white in the journal. The PDF will appear on the Wiley Interscience site.

Guidelines for Chemical Structures.

Chemical structures should be prepared in either 77 mm (one column) or 159 mm (two columns). However, the one-column format should be used whenever possible as this allows greater flexibility in the layout of the manuscript. Chemical structures should be supplied at the same size as the intended printed version, so that no enlargement or reduction is required. For drawings prepared with ChemDraw please use the “ACS Document?setting. Authors using different structural drawing programs should choose settings consistent with those above. Compound numbers should be bold, but not atom labels or captions.

Post Acceptance

Further Information. For accepted manuscripts the publisher will supply proofs to the submitting author prior to publication. This stage is to be used only to correct errors that may have been introduced during the production process. Prompt return of the corrected proofs, preferably within two days of receipt, will minimise the risk of the paper being held over to a later issue. Twenty-five complimentary offprints will be provided to the author who checked the proofs, unless otherwise indicated. Further offprints and copies of the journal may be ordered. There is no page charge to authors.
