About the journal

JMEWS (Journal of Middle East Women's Studies) is the official publication of the Association for Middle East Womens Studies and is a benefit of membership. Its purpose is to advance the fields of Middle East women's studies, gender studies, and Middle East studies through contributions across disciplines in the social sciences and humanities. JMEWS, which is published three times a year, publishes research informed by transnational feminist studies, cultural studies, modern historical studies, new forms of ethnography, and the emergent intersections of science and philosophy. JMEWS provides a forum in which area-specific questions can be discussed and debated among authors from the global north and south, through scholarly articles, book and film reviews, and other forms of communication.

Instructions to Authors
Manuscript Preparation and Style
- JMEWS uses a double-blind peer review process. Manuscript submissions should not include the author’s name or other information that identifies the author.
- Articles must be accompanied by a cover sheet with title of the article, the author’s name, institutional affiliation, email address, landmail address, and telephone number. Articles should include an abstract of no more than 100-150 words.
- Articles must be in English, double-spaced, with a 12-point font throughout and a one-inch margin all around, and must be between 7,500 – 10,000 words, including main text, block text, endnotes, and references. Quotations of 50 words or more should be block indented. Endnotes must be numbered consecutively. Works cited must be listed in the reference section, and vice versa. Works not cited should not be included among the references.
- JMEWS conforms to the Chicago Manual of Style. The editors reserve the right to copyedit manuscripts to conform to the journal’s style. Spelling will be edited to conform to American usage.
- Once a manuscript is accepted for publication, we work closely with the author to edit and format the article accordingly. If more substantial editing is required, the manuscript will be returned to the author for approval before publication. Authors must return the manuscript with corrections, if any, to the editorial office within 72 hours of receipt, or approval of the editorial revisions will be assumed. No rewriting is permitted in the proof stage.
Text
- Use a half-inch paragraph indent in the main text and the endnotes. Avoid hyphenation of words at the end of lines. Do not use desktop publishing features (e.g. justification, font colors other than black).
- Citation of works in the main text should follow these examples:
- Bean (1972) states….
- … for a period of time after they were vacated (Bean 1972)…
- … have not been studied in detail (Brew and Huckell 1987; Ravesloot 1992).
- … “bristling side by side” (Spier 1933, 59–60).
References
- JMEWS references conform to the “nested” style found in American Anthropologist: below the author line, the date and title line is indented, with a hanging indent. For examples of references, see further below.
- Ensure that author names and titles are spelled correctly and consistently.
- Titles in non-Roman alphabets (Arabic, Cyrillic, etc.) must be transliterated and translated. Capitalize only the first word, proper names, and place names. Example: Dirasa fi adab al-Rafi‘i (A study of the literary work of al-Rafi‘i).
- The place of publication should appear in its common English form, e.g. Cairo rather than al-Qahira. If the publisher’s name is spelled in a non-Roman alphabet, it should be transliterated. If the publisher uses the Roman alphabet in publicity, that form of the publisher’s name may be used, e.g. Rabat: El Maarif al Jadida.
Foreign Words and Transliteration System>
- Words with accepted English spellings, such as place names or the personal names of prominent figures, should be spelled in accordance with English norms. No word that appears in an unabridged English dictionary shall be treated as a technical term requiring italicization, transliteration, or the marking of ‘ayn or hamza (e.g. ulema, Shia, sharia, and so forth).
- Apart from the above, technical terms, personal names, place names, the titles of books and articles, and the names of political parties and organizations in languages using non-Roman alphabets must be fully transliterated.
- For the transliteration of Arabic, Persian, and Ottoman Turkish, JMEWS follows the system used by the International Journal of Middle East Studies (IJMES), with the following exceptions: JMEWS does not use the dot, the macron, or underlining.
- ‘Ayn is indicated by a single left “smart quote.” Hamza is indicated by a single right “smart quote” (or apostrophe).
- 5.Ta marbutais rendered–a, not–ah, except in Persian, where it should be rendered–ih; the adjectival–ya followed by ta marbutais rendered–iyya (–iyyihin Persian);nisbais rendered–iyya; the letter l in al- is not assimilated to the following consonant.
- Persian is transliterated according to the JMEWS system, not that of the Encyclopaedia Iranica, so that i and u should be used rather than e and o. The Persian izafat is rendered as –i.
- Authors are responsible for the consistency and accuracy of their transliterations.
Dates
JMEWS does not use double dating. Use common era (CE) dates only, unless quoting from an original source, in which case use the date as quoted (hijra, solar, etc.), with the CE equivalent in parentheses.
Tables, Figures, and Artwork
- Tables should be numbered consecutively in Arabic numerals and placed at the end of the article. Tables will not be embedded in the main text.
- Figures must be professionally rendered or computer generated, and submitted as separated files. Details should be large enough to remain legible at 50% reduction. Below-standard artwork will be returned to the author for replacement.
- For all artwork, including photographs, consult the Managing Editor at jmews@yale.edu.
