Instructions to Authors
Guide for Authors
Manuscripts. Contemporary Clinical Trials accepts for consideration manuscripts containing original material if neither the article nor any part of its essential substance, tables, or figures has been or will be published or is currently submitted elsewhere before appearing in Contemporary Clinical Trials. This restriction does not apply to abstracts or press reports published in connection with scientific meetings.
Other Communications. Contemporary Clinical Trials invites Short Communications (manuscripts of 1500 or fewer words, excepting references, tables and figures) and Letters to the Editor (500 or fewer words, 12 or fewer references) for possible publication.
Guidelines for Submission. All articles should be submitted electronically using the Elsevier Editorial System (EES). EES is a web-based system with full online submission, review and status update capabilities. EES allows you to upload files directly from your computer. You may access EES at http://www.elsevier.com/journals. If you are using EES for the first time, you must register before you submit a paper. To do so, please click on "Submit Paper," then "Not Yet Registered," to begin the registration process.
For each submission, submit (by FAX) a cover letter signed by all authors and identify the person (with a complete address, telephone number, fax number and e-mail address) responsible for correspondence. State in the letter that all authors have seen and approved the final manuscript. Credit for authorship requires substantial contributions to: (a) conception and design, or analysis and interpretation of data; and (b) the drafting of the article or critical revision for important intellectual content.
Send this FAX to Beth Koch, Managing Editor, 211 East Chicago Avenue, Suite 1450, Chicago, IL 60611, USA. Tel: (312) 475-3633, Fax: (312)475 2692, E-mail: bkoch@iristrials.com.
Conflict of Interest. Authors of research articles should disclose in the cover letter of the submission any financial arrangement they may have with a company whose product figures prominently in the submitted manuscript or with a company making a competing product. Such information will be held in confidence while the paper is under review and will not influence the editorial decision. If the article is accepted for publication, the editors will discuss with the authors the manner in which such information is to be communicated to the reader.
Title Page. The title page should include the following information: the title of the paper; the name of each author, including first name; the institutional affiliation (including city, state and country) of each author; the name and contact information (phone, fax, address, email) of the person to whom reprint requests should be addressed; and any grant support that requires acknowledgment.
Abstract and Key Words. On a separate page, provide an abstract of 300 or fewer words. Following the abstract, provide three to ten key words or short phrases.
References. Number references consecutively using Arabic numerals in brackets, e.g., [1, 2], as they are cited in the text. For references first cited in tables or figure legends, number so they will be in sequence with references cited in the text. For references with fewer than six authors, list all authors. For references with six or more authors, list the first three authors followed by "et al." Articles in Special Issues: Please ensure that the words 'this issue' are added (in the list and text) to any references to other articles in this Special Issue.
Abbreviate journal names using abbreviations from the Index Medicus. Examples: [1] DuMouchel W. Bayesian meta-analysis. In: Berry D, ed. Statistical Methodology in Pharmaceutical Sciences. New York: Marcel Dekker, 1990. [2] Ingelfinger JA, Mosteller F, Thibodeau LA, Ware JH. Biostatistics in Clinical Medicine. 3rd ed. New York: McGraw-Hill, 1993. [3] Snowdon C, Elbourne D, Garcia J. Zelen randomization: attitudes of parents participating in a neonatal clinical trial. Control Clin Trials 1999;20:149-171. The reference list can include articles that are "in press." However, verification that the article has been accepted for publication must be obtained. The reference list cannot include personal communications, unpublished data, or manuscripts either "in preparation" or "submitted for publication." If essential, such material may be incorporated as appropriate in the text (see "Permissions").
Tables. All tables must be cited in the text. Double-space tables. Number tables using Arabic numerals sequentially in order of appearance, and place on separate, portrait-oriented pages. Put explanatory notes and other details relating to the body of a table in footnotes identified by superscript, lowercase letters.
Illustrations and Figures. All illustrations and figures must be cited in the text. Number illustrations and figures using Arabic numerals sequentially in order of appearance. Figures should be professionally designed. Glossy 5" X 7" photographs are requested. (Computer-generated figures produced by a 300 dpi laser printer are also acceptable.) Symbols, lettering, and numbering must be clear and large enough to remain legible after the figure has been reduced. On the back of each figure and illustration, write lightly in pencil the figure or illustration number, the name of the first author, and an arrow indicating the top. Do not mount illustrations or figures on cardboard. Include titles, figure or illustration numbers, and legends on a separate sheet. The titles, figure or illustration numbers, and legends should not appear on the figures and illustrations.
Acknowledgments. Prepare acknowledgments on a separate page. Obtain permission from all individuals named.
Abbreviations. Except for units of measurement, abbreviations are discouraged. Consult Scientific Style and Format: The CBE Manual for Authors, Editors, and Publishers (6th ed. New York: Cambridge University Press, 1994) for lists of standard abbreviations. Define abbreviations and acronyms the first time they are used.
Drug Names. Generic names should generally be used. When proprietary brands are used in research, include the brand name in parentheses to refer to drugs.
Permissions. Materials taken from other sources must be accompanied by a written statement from both author and publisher giving permission to Contemporary Clinical Trials for reproduction. For unpublished data and personal communications, obtain permission in writing from at least one author.
Review. The editorial staff reviews all manuscripts. Two outside referees review all manuscripts accepted for peer review. The editorial staff encourages authors to suggest names of possible reviewers, but reserves the right of final selection.
Proofs. If your paper is accepted for publication, proofs will be sent to the corresponding author. Read, correct, and return proofs within 48 hours of receipt. Limit corrections to printer's errors. Other corrections are subject to a charge.
Other information: Publication schedule. Regular issues of Contemporary Clinical Trials are published six times per year. Reprints. Use the order form and price list accompanying proofs to order reprints.
