About the journal

Cancer Cell publishes reports of novel results in any area of cancer research, from molecular and cellular biology to clinical oncology. The work should be not only of exceptional significance within its field but also of interest to researchers outside the immediate area. In addition, Cancer Cell provides expert analysis and commentary on seminal findings in cancer research, diagnosis and treatment. The goal of Cancer Cell is to promote the exchange of ideas and concepts across the entire cancer community, cultivating new areas of basic research and clinical investigation.

Cancer Cell will consider papers for publication in any aspect of cancer biology and clinical research, including (but not limited to):

Genetics, epigenetics, genomic instability
Cell signaling and communication
Cell cycle, DNA repair
Diagnostics (molecular profiling, pharmacogenomics)
Telomerase and transformation
Apoptosis
Angiogenesis, metastasis
Animal models
Cancer therapy (rational drug design, small molecule therapeutics)
Epidemiology and prevention

Instructions to Authors

GENERAL

Given the diverse interests of members of the cancer community, authors should strive to make the text and figures as clear and as broadly accessible as possible, spelling out relevance and implications for basic, translational, and clinical oncologists. Adherence to this guideline will increase the likelihood that editors and reviewers will deem the manuscript appropriate for Cancer Cell and will decrease the time to publication upon acceptance.

Research Papers

Cancer Cell publishes two categories of research paper: 1) full-length research articles, and 2) concise research reports. This is a forum for publication of primary research and clinical observations that have implications beyond the area of specialty, ideally advancing the field as a whole.

Articles
Research articles contain a maximum total character count of 60,000 (including spaces and figure legends), with no more than 8 figures and tables, occupying at most 8 printed pages. (Additional data may be published online as supplementary information at the editors?discretion.)

Reports

Research reports contain a maximum of 30,000 characters (including spaces and figure legends), with no more than 4 figures and tables, occupying at most 4 printed pages. (Additional data may be published online as supplementary information at the editors?discretion.)

All research papers should include:

Summary: A specific abstract of the experimental results of fewer than 120 words. References should not be cited.

Title: No more than 150 characters (including spaces).

Significance: A concise description of the significance of the work to the cancer community, research scientists and clinicians alike. This section is meant to complement the Summary by providing a summary of the context and relevance of the research. The significance section should be no more than 120 words, and references should not be cited.

Introduction: Without subheadings, the introductory section establishes importance of the present study with reference to previously published research and opinions.

Results: May be separate or integrated with the Discussion in a single section. Explicit citation of each figure panel is necessary.

Discussion: May be separate or integrated with Results in a single section. The discussion should be succinct, presenting the conclusions drawn from the data and new questions raised by the study.

Experimental Procedures: This section should contain sufficient detail so that all procedures can be repeated, in conjunction with cited references.

References: References are cited using the Cell style, i.e. name(s) and year are cited in the text in parentheses, and full references are listed alphabetically in the References list (the same format used in Cell). See style notes below for examples. Note: article titles do need to be included in the full reference. Only articles that are published or in press should be referenced; unpublished data, submitted manuscripts, abstracts, and personal communications (documented by a letter of permission) should be noted only within the text. Footnotes should not be used and will be transferred to the text.

Figures: Each copy of a submitted manuscript must be accompanied by a set of figures of sufficient quality for reviewers to judge the data. Multi-panelled figures should be pre-mounted as a montage ready for scanning. If panels are labeled separately, uppercase letters should be used (e.g., A, B, C, etc.). Magnification should be indicated by a bar scale. Color figures will be included only when in the reviewers' opinions they are essential. Authors will be charged $1000 for the first and $250 for each additional color figure, which partially defrays the cost of separating and printing color figures.

Final Submission for Production: Each figure should consist of a high-quality print ready for scanning and reduction to fit the printed page of the journal. (Note: multipanel figures must be arranged on a single sheet, not placed on separate sheets.) Electronic submission of figures is also encouraged. (Note, however, that high-quality prints are still required because a reference print is needed and because digital files are not always usable for production). Details on delivery of digital figures files:

If you wish to submit digital files of figures, place them on a CD or ZIP disk (CD is preferred) and submit along with the final version of the manuscript. Figure files may also be submitted via our FTP site. FTP information will be provided to accepted authors upon request. Name the figure files numerically with first author's last name; e.g., Smith1.psd, Smith2.psd, etc.

For photographs and structural representations (raster image figures), we prefer to receive figures in Photoshop?or high-resolution TIFF format.

Image formats that we can accept include:

TIFF (.tif) (preferred)
Photoshop?(all versions) (.psd)
EPS (encapsulated postscript) (.eps)
Postscript (.ps)
Adobe Illustrator?(all versions) (.ai)
PICT
Portable Document File (.pdf)

We cannot use the following image files formats for production: PowerPoint, Canvas, Microsoft Word, or Excel formats.
Figure Legends and Tables: Figure legends and tables should be included in the submitted manuscript as separate sections at the end of the manuscript. Each figure legend should have a brief, separate title that describes the entire figure without citing specific panels.

Letters to the Editor
Letters to the Editor should present short, decisive observations of interest based on published data. They may include a supporting figure, but should not be preliminary observations that need a later paper for validation.

Review Material*

Primers
Primers are educational summaries of common approaches used by members of the cancer community. Generally less than 1500 words, they provide clear explanations of how and why an approach is used. These pieces cover topics ranging from definitions of molecular techniques to design of clinical trials, with emphasis placed on the translational significance of the subject. Each Primer submission should include short single-sentence summary of the content. Literature citations are made in the same manner as in other article types. Most Primers are commissioned, but unsolicited proposals will be considered.
Previews
Previews are concise, informative essays that highlight the significance and implications of newly published papers or topics of experimental research. A premium is placed on making the text accessible to researchers in other areas. The length may be up to 1,200 words, with no more than 10 references to published material. Each Preview submission should include short single-sentence summary of the general content. Most Previews are commissioned, but timely unsolicited contributions will be considered.

Reviews
Reviews are designed to distill the latest advances in subjects of exceptional general interest. Not more than 2,500 words and 50 references, most Reviews are commissioned by the editors, but unsolicited proposals will be considered. Each Review submission should include a short summary (fewer than 100 words) of the content.

*Color figures that accompany Primers, Previews, and Reviews are included at no charge to the authors. Each figure should include a title and brief legend.
Submission

All manuscripts should be submitted online at http://cc.edmgr.com. If you cannot submit online, please send complete copies of the manuscript and an electronic file of the text to: Editor, Cancer Cell, Cell Press, 1100 Massachusetts Ave., Cambridge, MA 02138, USA. Authors are invited to list the names of 3-6 potential reviewers whom they believe can provide an expert and impartial critique of the work. The editors will also consider requests to exclude one or two potential referees who might have difficulty rendering an unbiased opinion. Copies of closely related papers in press or submitted elsewhere must accompany the manuscript before it will be considered for publication. Under no circumstances will any paper be considered that contains any data that have been or will be submitted for publication elsewhere (including symposium volumes). Revised manuscripts will be reconsidered only if resubmitted within eight weeks of the date of the original decision. For submissions that are not published, only available figures will be returned to authors.

Style notes:

?Gene symbols should be italicized; protein products are not italicized.

?Non-standard abbreviations should be defined when first used in the text.

Publication Schedule
Papers that do not meet the editors?criteria for publication will be returned promptly after consideration, without peer review. Otherwise, we try to let authors have reviewers' comments within a month. If revisions are a condition of publication, generally only one revised version of the paper will be considered. Because of Cancer Cell's rapid publication schedule, strict limitations are placed on corrections to articles at the proof stage, so manuscripts must be rigorously edited and checked before final submission. Page proofs should be returned within 24?8 hours, preferably by fax/courier. Any substantial additions must be as a Note added in proof. Articles will be published in print within 12 weeks of acceptance, usually much sooner.

Distribution of Material

Publication of a research article in Cancer Cell is taken to imply that the authors are prepared to distribute freely to academic researchers for their own use any materials (e.g., cells, DNA, antibodies) used in the published experiments. In cases of dispute, authors may be required to make primary data available to the editors. Sequence information and structural coordinates should be deposited in the appropriate databases.
