About the journal

State Politics & Policy Quarterly (SPPQ) features studies that develop general hypotheses of political behavior and policymaking and test these hypotheses using the unique methodological advantages of the states. It also includes field review essays and a section entitled The Practical Researcher, which is a service-oriented feature designed to provide a data, methodological, and assessment resource for those conducting research on state politics.

SPPQ is the official journal of the State Politics and Policy section of the American Political Science Association and is published by the University of Illinois Press for the Institute of Legislative Studies at the University of Illinois at Springfield.

Instructions to Authors

Instructions to Contributors: SPPQ publishes high quality academic studies that develop general hypotheses of political behavior and policymaking and test these hypotheses using the unique methodological advantages of the states. The editor seeks manuscripts on all aspects of political behavior and policy in the states, with no restriction on methodological or theoretical approach. Qualitative and quantitative, single-state and multi-state studies will all be considered, but only those manuscripts that meet the most rigorous methodological and theoretical academic standards will be published in SPPQ. Studies that deal with other sub-national units of government in the U.S. and elsewhere will also be considered for publication. All manuscripts submitted for consideration will be double-blind reviewed.

Please send original research and review essay manuscripts to Richard F. Winters, Co-editor, State Politics and Policy Quarterly, 6108 Silsby Hall, Dartmouth College, Hanover, NH 03755; email: sppq@dartmouth.edu. Send four copies of the manuscript, three of which having all identifying references removed, and a computer disk with an electronic version of the entire paper with identifying references removed. Word or WordPerfect formats are preferred. Manuscripts should include an abstract (100-150 words), and all material should be double-spaced. SPPQ follows the APSA's Style Manual for Political Science. Authors should include their email addresses in a cover letter. SPPQ does not consider manuscripts under review elsewhere, or manuscripts of greater than 40 pages including tables, references and text. For works published in SPPQ, all authors must be prepared to provide, upon request, a replication data set for analyses reported therein.

Please send manuscripts for ¡°The Practical Researcher to Donald P. Haider-Markel, Associate Editor, Department of Political Science, 1541 Lilac Lane, University of Kansas, Lawrence, KS 66044; email: prex@ku.edu.
