Instructions to Authors

INSTRUCTIONS FOR AUTHORS

Address manuscripts to the Editor-in-Chief, Rashid L. Bashshur, Ph.D., Telemedicine Journal and e-Health, Director of Telemedicine, Office of Clinical Affairs, University of Michigan Health System, C201 Medinn Building, 1500 East Medical Drive, Ann Arbor, MI 48109-0825. Telephone: (734) 647-3089, fax (734) 936-9406; email: bashshur@umich.edu. Manuscripts should be submitted in triplicate (the original plus two copies of all figures and tables) and one copy on floppy disk, Word (version 6 or higher) format.

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE AND POLICY

Telemedicine Journal and e-Health is a quarterly peer-reviewed publication encompassing all aspects of clinical telemedical practice; technical advances and enabling technologies; continuing medical education; and the impact of telemedicine on the quality, cost effectiveness, and access to health care. The Journal will include original peer-reviewed manuscripts, review papers, case reports, perspective papers from leaders in the field, editorials, book reviews, and abstracts from the literature. Manuscripts should only contain original material that is not under consideration for publication elsewhere.

PREPARATION OF MANUSCRIPT

Type manuscripts double spaced throughout on regular 81/2 x 11 typewriter paper (not erasable bond). Leave ample margins on the sides, top, and bottom of the page.

The title page should include the authors' names and affiliations, the source of a work or study (if any), and a running title of about 45 characters. Please indicate the name and complete mailing address of the author to whom correspondence should be addressed, with a telephone and fax number. The second page should contain an abstract of not more than 250 words, which should be self-explanatory without reference to the text. Abstract should contain separate sections as follows: objective, materials and methods, results, and conclusion. Abstracts for perspective papers should not have these separate sections. Papers should follow this format: abstract, introduction, materials and methods, results, discussion, acknowledgments, references. Number pages consecutively. At the end of the paper, give the name and address of the individual to whom reprint requests should be directed.

Please adhere to the following style to avoid delays in publication.

TABLES AND ILLUSTRATIONS

Type each table and its title on a separate sheet of paper. Use Arabic numerals to number tables. Remember, each table must stand alone (i.e. contain all necessary information in the caption; the table itself must be understood independently of the text). Details of experimental conditions should be included in the table footnotes. Information that appears in the text should not be repeated in tables, and tables should not contain data that can be given in the text in one or two sentences.

Original pen drawings and charts (drawn and lettered in India ink), glossy photostats of drawings or graphs, and original glossy photographs for all photographic or radiographic illustrations should be supplied with the original manuscript. (Photocopies cannot be used for reproduction.) All illustrations should be identified with the figure number and the author's name on a gummed label affixed to the back of the print. The top of the illustration should be indicated. A list of figure legends should be supplied at the end of the manuscript, double spaced. Magnifications should be included when appropriate. Illustrations will not be returned unless requested. Color illustrations: Authors will be charged for the cost of color separations and printing at the rate of $275 per piece of color art plus $1,200 per page of color. The publisher will provide the author with a more precise cost estimate when the figures are received.

REFERENCES

Reference citations are not permitted in the abstract of a paper. References should be presented in the following style: Journal paper: Murphy RL, Bird KT. Telediagnosis: a new community health resource. Observations on the feasibility of telediagnosis based on 1000 patient transactions. Am J Public Health 1974;64:113-119 Book: Conrath DW, Dunn EV, Higgins CA. Evaluating telecommunications technology in medicine. Dedham, MA: Artech House, 1983:20 24 Chapter in a Book: Park B. Communications aspects of telemedicine. In: Bashshur RL, Armstrong PA, Youssef Zl, eds. Telemedicine: explorations in the use of telecommunications in health care. Springfield, IL: Charles C. Thomas, 1975:54-88. If it is necessary to cite an abstract, this should be so designated. Authors are responsible for the accuracy of the reference and are reminded that inaccurate references are highly frustrating to the reader, the cited author, and indexing services. Abbreviations of journal titles should follow Index Medicus.

NOMENCLATURE

Follow the Uniform Guidelines for manuscripts submitted to biomedical journals (Ann Intern Med 1988; 108:258-265). papers will be edited to conform to the individual style of Telemedicine Journal and e-Health.

PERMISSIONS

The author must obtain permission to reproduce figures, tables, and text from previously published material, even if that is the author's own work. Written permission must be obtained from the original copyright holder (generally the publisher, not the author or editor) of the journal or book concerned. An appropriate credit line should be included in the figure legend or table footnote, and full publication information should be included in the reference list. Written permission must be obtained from the author of any unpublished material cited from other institutions and should accompany the manuscript.
