The Nephrology Nursing Journal is a refereed clinical and scientific resource that provides current information on wide variety of subjects to facilitate the practice of professional nephrology nursing. Its purpose is to disseminate information on the latest advances in research, practice, and education to nephrology nurses to positively influence the quality of care they provide.
The Nephrology Nursing Journal is designed to meet the educational and information needs of nephrology nurses in a variety of roles at all levels of practice. It also serves as a source for nonnephrology nurses. Its content expands the knowledge base for nephrology nurses, stimulates professional growth, guides research-based practice, presents new technological developments, and provides a forum for review of critical issues promoting the advancement of nephrology nursing practice.
History
The Nephrology Nursing Journal, official publication of the American Nephrology Nurses’ Association (ANNA), is now in its 39th year of publication! The Nephrology Nursing Journal has seen many changes through the years and has even had four different titles during its long and distinguished history.
The association’s official publication began in 1974 as The Journal of the American Association of Nephrology Nurses and Technicians, when the organization was known as AANNT. That title was shortened in 1980 the to AANNT Journal, before changing over to the ANNA Journal in 1985 when the organization became known as the American Nephrology Nurses’ Association (ANNA). Finally, the publication became known as the Nephrology Nursing Journal in February 2000 to reflect the journal’s global goal to reach readers within ANNA as well as those outside the organization and the specialty.
The publication has had five different editors throughout its tenure, including current Editor Beth Ulrich, EdD, RN, FACHE, FAAN.

Beth Ulrich, EdD, RN, FACHE, FAAN, brings her editorial and writing expertise in nursing publications to the Nephrology Nursing Journal. Dr. Ulrich has extensive experience as a healthcare executive, educator, author, and researcher. She is a nationally recognized nursing leader who is known for her research on nursing work environments and the experiences of new graduate nurses as they transition into the workforce as well as for her leadership in developing the roles of nephrology nurses and improving the care of nephrology patients. Beth began her nephrology nursing career in 1972 and served ANNA as Secretary and Vice President for the Southeast Region and as President in 1984-85. She was recognized for her contributions to ANNA in 2009 when she was awarded “The Outstanding Contribution to ANNA Award,” the association’s most prestigious award. Her book, Mastering Precepting: A Nurse's Handbook for Success, was named a 2012 AJN Book of the Year.
Karen C. Robbins, MS, RN, CNN, has held a variety of clinically focused positions in nephrology nursing, both in dialysis and transplantation. Positions include Kidney Transplant Coordinator, Nurse Clinician in Transplantation, staff nurse in dialysis, and Nurse Educator in Dialysis and Transplantation. She has experience as a nephrology nurse consultant and legal nurse consultant. Karen has served ANNA as Northeast Vice President, Treasurer, President in 1997-98, and President of the Colonial Chapter of ANNA. She served as a Director for the Nephrology Nursing Certification Board (now NNCC). She was recognized for her contributions to ANNA in 2003 when she was awarded “The Outstanding Contribution to ANNA Award,” the association’s most prestigious award.
Lynda Ball is the Quality Improvement Director, ESRD Network #13, Oklahoma City, OK, a member of ANNA's Red River Chapter, and National ANNA Secretary.

Deborah Brooks is a Research Coordinator and Nurse Practitioner in the Division of Nephrology at the Medical University of South Carolina. She has been a nephrology nurse since 1980 and has been active in ANNA in a number of capacities.

Paula Dutka functions in an advanced practice capacity as a Clinical Nurse Specialist at Winthrop-University Hospital, in Long Island, NY. Her multi-faceted role encompasses three areas of practice, including research, staff education, and management. Paula is a past president of the Long Island Chapter of ANNA, an ANNA item writer, and has served as a manuscript reviewer.
Carol Headley is Nephrology APN at the VA Medical Center in Memphis, TN. She has served as Program Chairperson for the ANNA National Symposium and additional meetings, and is also the Editor of the 2007 ANNA publication, Career Fulfillment in Nephrology Nursing: Your Guide to Professional Development (Second Edition).
Patricia McCarley is Vice President of Clinical Services for Renal Advantage, Inc. Her experience in nephrology spans 25 years. She has held various volunteer positions within ANNA, including National Symposium Program Chairperson.
Holly McFarland is a clinical nurse specialist with 23 years of nephrology nursing experience and has her own renal consulting business. She had held several chapter officer positions and is currently president of the Tar River Chapter in NC. She served 2 years as advisor for the National Management Symposium, was on the ANNA Education Committee for the same period, and has been a member of the Hemodialysis SIG Committee.
Christine Mudge is the Pediatric Nurse Practitioner in hepatology/nephrology and pediatric transplantation at the University of California at San Francisco (UCSF). She also serves as Assistant Clinical Professor at UCSF and has held numerous past positions within ANNA, including Western Region Vice President and National Symposium Advisor. Christine is also a noted past author for nephrology publications such as the American Journal of Kidney Diseases and Mosby's Clinical Nursing Series, and was a co-author on the transplantation chapter in ANNA's Contemporary Nephrology Nursing (1998). She is a frequent presenter on nephrology, transplant, and pediatrics topics at national meetings throughout the United States.
