About the journal

Mass Communication and Society' mission is to publish articles from a wide variety of perspectives and approaches that advance mass communication theory, especially at the societal or macrosocial level. It draws heavily from many other disciplines, including sociology, psychology, anthropology, philosophy, law, and history. Methodologically, journal articles employ qualitative and quantitative methods, survey research, ethnography, laboratory experiments, historical methods, and legal analysis.

Instructions to Authors
Mass Communication & Society (MC&S) publishes original research and scholarship on mass communication processes and effects with the goal of contributing to a theoretical base of knowledge. The journal is open to all theoretical and methodological approaches.
Submissions: Submitted papers should be no longer than 30 pages including tables and figures. Only original manuscripts that are not under review for any other publication in whole or in part should be submitted to Mass Communication and Society. Submissions are accepted through the Scholar One electronic submissions system. Follow the log in and registration process at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/mcas. Illustrations: Illustrations submitted (line drawings, halftones, photos, photomicrographs, etc.) should be clean originals or digital files. Digital files are recommended for highest quality reproduction and should follow these guidelines:
300 dpi or higher
Sized to fit on journal page
EPS, TIFF, or PSD format only
Submitted as separate files, not embedded in text files
Color illustrations will be considered for publication; however, the author will be required to bear the full cost involved in color art reproduction. Color art can be purchased for online only conversion and reproduction or for print + online reproduction. Color reprints can only be ordered if printþonline reproduction costs are paid. Rates for color art reproduction are: Online Only Reproduction: $225 for the first page of color; $100 per page for the next three pages of color.
A maximum charge of $525 applies. Print + Online Reproduction: $900 for the first page of color; $450 per page for the next three pages of color. A custom quote will be provided for articles with more than four pages of color. Good-quality color prints should be provided in their final size. The publisher has the right to refuse publication of color prints deemed unacceptable.
Tables and Figures: Tables and figures (illustrations) should not be embedded in the text, but should be included as separate sheets or files. A short descriptive title should appear above each table with a clear legend and any footnotes suitably identified below. All units must be included. Figures should be completely labeled, taking into account necessary size reduction. Captions should be typed, double-spaced, on a separate sheet. All original figures should be clearly marked in pencil on the reverse side with the number, author's name, and top edge indicated.
Manuscript Preparation: Manuscripts should be prepared according to the guidelines of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (5th ed.). Double space all material, including title page, abstract, text, quotations, acknowledgments, references, appendices, tables, figure captions, and footnotes. Footnotes should be kept to a minimum. No title page is needed since identification and contact information are entered separately in the system. Do not include author name, institution, or other identifying information anywhere in the document you upload. The first page should include the manuscript title, an abstract of 100 to 150 words, and a list of key words for use in indexing. All figures must be camera ready.
Book Reviews: MCS regularly publishes reviews of books pertaining to mass communication processes, social impacts and media effects. Book reviews should be submitted to Mass Communication & Society through the Scholar One electronic submission system. Go to http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/mcas and follow the log in and registration process. Then follow the procedures for uploading the book review to the system. Reviewers receive one copy of the issue in which the review appears. Additional printed copies are not available. Peer Review: Submitted articles undergo masked peer review. The normal review period is 3 months. Authors should take care that the manuscript contains no clues as to identity.
Permissions: Authors are responsible for the content of theirwork and for obtaining permission fromcopyright owners to use a lengthy quotation (500words ormore) or to reprint or adapt a table or figure published elsewhere.Authors shouldwrite to original author(s) and publisher of such material to request nonexclusive world rights in all languages for use in the article and in future editions. Provide copies of all permissions and credit lines obtained.
Proofs and Reprints: Page proofs are sent to the designated author using Taylor & Francis' Central Article Tracking System (CATS). They must be carefully checked and returned within 48 hours of receipt. Reprints of individual articles are available for order at the time authors review page proofs.
