PHILOSOPHICAL MAGAZINE
January 2003 sees the first issue of Philosophical Magazine under a new integrated structure - the division into Philosophical Magazine A (structure, defects and mechanical properties) and Philosophical Magazine B (statistical mechanics, electronic, optical and magnetic properties) is no longer appropriate for a subject which continues to evolve and expand. Rather than developing new parts for the journal, the new integrated structure (re-establishing the all-embracing title first adopted in 1798) can cope better with the complexity of forefront research that is increasingly difficult to classify into distinct areas. |

Philosophical Magazine publishes contributed articles and critical reviews in the field of condensed matter describing original results, theories and concepts relating to the structure and properties of crystalline materials, ceramics, polymers, glasses, amorphous films, composites and soft matter. Papers emphasizing experimental, theoretical and modelling studies on solids, especially those that interpret their behaviour on an atomic or microscopic scale, are particularly appropriate. We envisage growing coverage of phase transitions, nanotechnology, novel material types, and materials for electronic and related devices. Further evolution is expected to see the development of such topics as soft condensed matter and in particular the interface between hard and soft matter.
Abstracting and Indexing:
Philosophical Magazine is abstracted and indexed in INSPEC; ISI Current Contents:Physical, Chemical & Earth Sciences; Engineering Information Inc; Chemical Abstracts Service; EBSCO Publishing; Cambridge Scientific Abstracts; CSIRO; New Jour; Astrophysics Data System and SciBase - the current impact factors are 1.409 (Part A) and 1.413 (Part B).
Readership:
Physicists, materials scientists, and physical chemists within universities and research institutes.
Instructions to Authors
1. Introduction
It is essential that authors prepare their manuscripts according to established specifications. Failure to do so may result in manuscripts being delayed and the effectiveness of the search capabilities offered by electronic delivery being compromised. Contributors should therefore check the manuscript for compliance with these instructions before submitting it for publication.
2. Submitting a Paper to Philosophical Magazine
Papers for consideration should be submitted via the journal's online site.
New authors will be requested to open an account on the site before submitting their manuscript. A helpdesk and an online user guides are accessible from this site.
3. General Guidelines
Philosophical Magazine considers all manuscripts on the strict condition they have not been published previously, nor are they under consideration for publication or in press elsewhere. Contributions to Philosophical Magazine must report original research and will be subjected to review by referees.
There are a limited number of colour pages within the annual page allowance. Authors should restrict their use of colour to situations where it is necessary on scientific, and not merely cosmetic, grounds. In other circumstances, authors may pay for publish colour illustrations, but they should consult the publisher regarding cost before submission.
Writing your paper
- For all manuscripts non-discriminatory language is mandatory. Sexist or racist terms should not be used.
- Authors should include a word count with their manuscript.
- All authors of a paper should include their full names, affiliations, postal addresses, telephone and fax numbers and email addresses on the cover page of manuscripts.
- Abstracts of around 50-250 words are required for all submitted papers and should precede the text of a paper - see Notes on Style
- Manuscripts should be compiled in the following order: title page; abstract; keywords; main text; acknowledgments; appendixes (as appropriate); references; table(s) with caption(s); figure caption(s) (as a list).; figures.
- Section headings should be concise and numbered sequentially, using a decimal system for subsections.
- Authors must adhere to SI units. Units are not italicised.
- When using a word which is or is asserted to be a proprietary term or trade mark authors must use the symbol ?or TM or alternatively a footnote can be inserted using the wording below:
This article includes a word that is or is asserted to be a proprietary term or trade mark. Its inclusion does not imply it has acquired for legal purposes a non-proprietary or general significance, nor is any other judgement implied concerning its legal status.
4. Copyright
It is a condition of publication that authors vest or license copyright in their articles, including abstracts, in Taylor & Francis Ltd. This enables us to ensure full copyright protection and to disseminate the article, and the Journal, to the widest possible readership in print and electronic formats as appropriate. Authors may, of course, use the material elsewhere after publication providing that prior permission is obtained from Taylor & Francis Ltd. Authors are themselves responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyright material from other sources.
For details on copyright permission click here. Copies of the permission letters should be sent with the manuscript to the Editors.
5. Notes on Style

In many cases this facility will be available up to two weeks prior to publication. Alternatively, corresponding authors will receive the traditional 50 offprints. A copy of the Journal will be sent by post to all corresponding authors after publication. Additional copies of a single issue of the Journal can be purchased at the author's preferential rate of ?5.00/$25.00 per copy, pro-rata if double or triple issues.

8. Page Charges
There are no page charges to individuals or institutions.
