About the journal

The International Journal of Art & Design Education provides an international forum for the dissemination of ideas, practical developments, and research findings in art and design education. The Journal (published under the auspices of the National Society for Education in Art and Design) is a primary source for independently refereed articles about art and design education at all levels.
The journal reflects and welcomes a wide range of theoretical and practical approaches especially those that debate the social and cultural values which inform art and design education, offer illustrated case studies, analyse and exemplify specific art, craft and design practices in all sectors of education, and that critically engage with the past, present and future of art and design education.

Instructions to Authors
Method for submission of material All material should be sent to:
Dr Dennis Atkinson Chief Editor Department of Educational Studies Goldsmiths College University of London Lewisham Way New Cross London SE14 6NW UK
Please submit material by one of the following methods. These are listed in their preferred order:
1. A disk-ready copy (preferably Macintosh) with separate picture files (TIFF) on a Zip disk or CD-Rom plus two hard copies.
2. A floppy disk of text (Macintosh or PC) with two hard copies, plus separate illustrations as hard copy and on disk (TIFF) preferably.
3. Two complete hard copies, i.e. manuscript (or more properly) typescript plus illustrations also as hard copy.
The text, abstract and style The text should be between 2000 and 5000 words normally but preferably c. 3500. An abstract of 100 to 250 words must accompany each article. The text style for submission should be typed on one side of the paper, preferably in Times 12 point, double spaced with ample margins, and clearly show the title of the contribution, the name(s) of the author(s) and a full contact address for correspondence and offprints. All pages must be numbered. Footnotes to the text should be avoided. Typescripts (and/or disks) will not normally be returned to contributors unless sufficient international postal coupons or stamps have been sent.
Refereeing Contributors should note that because the Journal is refereed, there is a delay between the acknowledgement of the receipt, and a decision to accept, reject, or specify amendments. All submissions are read by the editors, refereed by at least one member of the Editorial Board, and/or an Overseas Consultant or an outside expert. Their views are considered by the Editorial Board, or when circumstances demand, by a delegated minority that meets more frequently. The principal editor is empowered to circumvent this procedure in the case of contributions that are particularly topical, meet the Editorial Board's general criteria, and seem likely to sustain diminished effectiveness if publication is delayed.
Tables and captions to illustrations Tables must be typed out on separate sheets and not included as part of the text. They should be numbered in Roman numerals. Captions to illustrations (Figures) should be gathered together, typed out on a separate sheet, and should be numbered in Arabic numerals. The preferred position of tables and figures should be indicated in the script. Illustrations may be slides, colour or black and white photographs of good contrast and definition. Two copies of each example should be submitted. Original works, excepting photographs, should not be submitted.
Biographical notes Each contributor should include an outline of c. 100 words including their present post and location, education and previous positions, research areas, recent publications, consultancy or honours, etc, and a contact address.
References References should be kept to a practical minimum and should be indicated in the text by square bracketed Arabic numerals. The references should be numbered in sequential order as they first appear in the text and should be listed in full at the end of the paper. Please see the following:

Proofing Initially the responsibility of the authors but the final responsibility of the editors.
Exclusive Licence Form Authors will be required to sign an Exclusive Licence Form (ELF) for all papers accepted for publication. Signature of the ELF is a condition of publication and papers will not be passed to the publisher for production unless a signed form has been received. Please note that signature of the Exclusive Licence Form does not affect ownership of copyright in the material. (Government employees need to complete the Author Warranty sections, although copyright in such cases does not need to be assigned). After submission authors will retain the right to publish their paper in various medium/circumstances (please see the form for further details). To assist authors an appropriate form will be supplied by the editorial office. Alternatively, authors may like to download a copy of the form here
