Aims & scope
Annals of Clinical Microbiology and Antimicrobials considers manuscripts on all aspects of clinical microbiology, infectious diseases and antimicrobials.
Submitted manuscripts can report on: any aspect of diagnosis of infectious diseases; biological aspects of infectious diseases; case management and antimicrobial treatment; antibiotic development and antimicrobial resistance.
The average time from submission to a first decision is 35 days.
Annals of Clinical Microbiology and Antimicrobials is an open access, peer-reviewed journal focusing on information concerning clinical microbiology, infectious diseases and antimicrobials. The management of infectious disease is dependent on correct diagnosis and appropriate antimicrobial treatment, and with this in mind, the journal aims to improve the communication between basic and clinical science in the field of clinical microbiology and antimicrobial treatment.
Annals of Clinical Microbiology and Antimicrobials is an international journal with a broad scope, incorporating microbiology and antimicrobials in almost all branches of medicine. Furthermore, the journal has no restrictions on space or access; this ensures that the journal can reach the widest possible audience.

All articles published by Annals of Clinical Microbiology and Antimicrobials are made freely and permanently accessible online immediately upon publication, without subscription charges or registration barriers. Further information about open access can be found here.
Authors of articles published in Annals of Clinical Microbiology and Antimicrobials are the copyright holders of their articles and have granted to any third party, in advance and in perpetuity, the right to use, reproduce or disseminate the article, according to the BioMed Central copyright and license agreement.

Article-processing charges
Open access publishing is not without costs. Annals of Clinical Microbiology and Antimicrobials therefore levies an article-processing charge of £1115/$1825/€1340 for each article accepted for publication. We routinely waive charges for authors from low-income countries. Generally, if the submitting author's institution is a Member the cost of the article-processing charge is covered by the membership, and no further charge is payable. In the case of authors whose institutions are Supporter Members, however, a discounted article-processing charge is payable by the author. For further details, see our article-processing charge page. A limited number of waivers for article-processing charges are also available at the editors' discretion, and authors wishing to apply for these waivers should contact the editors.

Publication and peer review process
Criteria for publication
Annals of Clinical Microbiology and Antimicrobialsconsiders the following types of articles:
- Research - original reports of basic or clinical research concerning all aspects of infectious diseases, clinical microbiology, antimicrobial treatment and antimicrobial resistance. Research may be basic or clinical.
- Case reports - reports of clinical cases that can be educational, describe a diagnostic or therapeutic dilemma, suggest an association, or present an important adverse reaction. Reports may suggest the need for a change in practice or thinking in terms of diagnosis or prognosis, but not in terms of preventative or therapeutic intervention, which require stronger evidence.
- Reviews - comprehensive, authoritative, summaries of recent insights in specific research areas within the scope of Annals of Clinical Microbiology and Antimicrobials. They can be submitted either upon specific invitation or editorial acceptance of an author's proposal. To submit a proposal, authors should send a tentative title and abstract to the Editorial Office and justify their expertise in the target area, and also both the scientific relevance and the lack of recent reviews on the topic.

Peer-review policies
Annals of Clinical Microbiology and Antimicrobials uses online peer review to speed up the publication process. The time taken to reach a final decision depends on whether reviewers request revisions, and how quickly authors are able to respond.
Once an article is accepted, it is published in Annals of Clinical Microbiology and Antimicrobials immediately as a provisional PDF file. The articlewill subsequently be published in both fully browseable web form, and as a formatted PDF. The article will then be available through Annals of Clinical Microbiology and Antimicrobials, BioMed Central and PubMed Central, and will also be included in PubMed.
The ultimate responsibility for any decision lies with the Editor-in-Chief, to whom any appeals against rejection should be addressed.

All articles submitted for publication in supplements are subject to peer review. Published supplements are fully searchable and freely accessible online and can also be produced in print. All full length articles (proceedings, reviews or research articles) are indexed by PubMed. PubMed displays the title of the supplement only in the case of meeting abstract collections.
