About the journal

The Scottish Geographical Journal is the learned publication of the Royal Scottish Geographical Society and is a continuation of the Scottish Geographical Magazine, first published in 1885. The Journal was relaunched in its present format in 1999. The Journal is international in outlook and publishes scholarly articles of original research from any branch of geography and on any part of the world, while at the same time maintaining a distinctive interest in and concern with issues relating to Scotland.

“The Scottish Geographical Journal mixes physical and human geography in a way that no other international journal does. It deploys a long heritage of geography in Scotland to address the most pressing issues of today. Already a leading journal, the SGJ is poised to be among the absolute best in a changing field.”

Neil Smith, City University of New York, USA

Scottish Landform Examples
This popular series has been running since 1991 and is intended to present classic landforms of the Scottish environment at a level suitable for advanced school students, teachers and undergraduate university students. It aims to make available succinct summary accounts of both familiar and more obscure landforms to those interested in the physical geography of Scotland, especially teachers and researchers. New areas of research or new enquiries about familiar landforms may also be aired. Subjects can be drawn from any area of geomorphology, cover any time or spatial scale from microtopography to landscape and may be monogenetic or polygenetic. Contributions should follow the Notes for Contributors and should normally include one or more maps or diagrams and a ground or air photograph. The text length should be around 2500 words including references and access information.

Contributions to the series are sought with enquiries directed to Dr D.J.A. Evans, Department of Geography, University of Durham, Durham, DH1 3LE. Email:
d.j.a.evans@durham.ac.uk

TYPESCRIPTS should be double spaced with wide margins. Papers should not normally exceed 6000 words or their equivalent including figures. An abstract of not more than 200 words, up to six key words and an abbreviated running title should also be supplied. Since papers are submitted anonymously to referees, authors should prepare and upload two versions of their manuscript. One should be a complete text, while in the second all document information identifying the author should be removed from files to allow them to be sent anonymously to referees. When uploading files authors will then be able to define the non-anonymous version as "File not for review".

HEADINGS of not more than three styles should be used, with heading status confirmed by pencilled labelling in the margin.

A PRIMARY HEADING (Capitals, left justified, separate line)

B Secondary Heading (Capitals at first word and proper names only, separate line)

C Tertiary Heading (Capitals at first word and proper names only, text following on same line)

ILLUSTRATIONS should take the form of good quality diagrams and/or photographs. Electronic submission of diagrams should be in EPS (.eps). Adobe illustrator (.ai) or Corel Draw (.cdr) formats and photographs in TIFF (.tif) or JEPG (.jpg) format. Line drawings should be no more than two to three times the final print size which has a maximum width of 14 cm. Lettering should allow for reduction and dot or line shading should be used. Photographs must be submitted on glossy paper and prints with sharp detail and moderate contrast should be used. One finished set of illustrations is sufficient if two additional rough copies are provided in paper submission. All illustrations should be referred to as ‘Figures' and numbered consecutively.

TABLES should be double spaced on a separate page and numbered consecutively in Arabic numerals. Preferred positions in the text should be indicated in the typescript. Self-explanatory captions should be given above the table.

MEASUREMENTS, abbreviations, numbers and words of foreign origin should be treated according to the normal conventions for scientific journals. A detailed style sheet, available on request from the Editor, is sent to authors when a paper is accepted for publication.

REFERENCES should adhere to the Harvard system, with authors' names and dates quoted in the text in chronological order e.g. (Pacione, 1983; Carter and Jones, 1989) and also listed alphabetically at the end of the paper. The list, under an Aheading ‘REFERENCES', should provide full bibliographical details in the following order: name(s) and initials; date; full title; journal (in full); pagination; place of publication and publisher (for a book). The normal convention of italicisation of journal names and book titles should be adopted.
