About the journal

Biological Reviews covers the entire range of the biological sciences, presenting several review articles per issue. Although scholarly and with extensive bibliographies, the articles are aimed at non-specialist biologists as well as researchers in the field. Authors are specifically instructed to be aware of this fact in their writing, and the resulting reviews serve as extensive introductions to particular fields, outlining the state of the art, and drawing attention to gaps in knowledge. Articles are up to 20,000 words long and each contains an abstract, a thorough introduction and statement of conclusions.

Instructions to Authors

Editorial policy

Biological Reviews aims to cover the whole field of biology, and in particular the growth areas in modern biology including the scientific foundations of medicine. Articles range from comprehensive reviews of a broad research field to shorter articles on more specialised topics, and very great flexibility in content and presentation is allowed. Articles are pitched at a level for experts in the particular field of research, but authors are asked to write in a way that is intelligible to the non-expert so that other scientists unfamiliar with the topic can learn something about it. Many articles are extensively illustrated. Publication time of an article after acceptance is currently 3-5 months.

Submission of manuscripts

Manuscripts and enquiries should be addressed to the Editor, Biological Reviews, Cambridge Philosophical Society, Bene't Street, Cambridge CB2 3PY, UK (Tel: +44 (0) 1223 334743; Fax: +44 (0) 1223 334748). Submitting authors should include fax and phone numbers and, if possible, an email address.

Submission of a paper is taken to imply that it has not been previously published and that it is not being considered for publication elsewhere. Upon acceptance of a paper, the author will be asked to transfer copyright to the Cambridge Philosophical Society.

There are no page charges.

Style and content

Articles should be critical assessments of fields of research, of value to specialists in the field and comprehensible to biologists in general. Those presenting a new theory or point of view are preferred. All articles are subject to refereeing. Most published papers are in the range of 5,000 to 20,000 words, but shorter or longer reviews are acceptable. Articles

should be written in English.

Each article should have an Abstract (not more than 500 words), 5-10 Key words, a list of Contents, a general Introduction, and Conclusions (given as numbered statements). Sections and subsections are to be numbered I. (1), (a), etc.

The generic name of a species should be given in full the first time it occurs in a paragraph. The author authority for each species is desirable on its first mention. In general, chemical formulae may not be used as abbreviations in the text. The journal uses S.I. units. Recent issues of the Journal should be consulted for style.

Preparation of manuscripts

Three complete copies of the paper, including illustrations, are required. When a manuscript has been accepted for publication, the author is strongly encouraged to send a copy of the final version on computer disk (either Apple Macintosh or IBM-compatible PC) together with the hard copy typescript, giving details of the wordprocessing software used (preferably Microsoft Word or Word Perfect). The publisher reserves the right to typeset material by conventional means if an author's disk proves unsatisfactory. Manuscripts should be double-spaced throughout and with adequate margins. They should be typed on one side only of A4 or American quarto white paper.

Figures may be line diagrams, drawings or photographs and must have legends which should make the Figures comprehensible without reference to the text. The legends should be typed double-spaced on separate sheets. Figures should be drawn in Indian ink on good quality white paper or produced by computer to comparable quality. A photocopy showing the position of any lettering should accompany each Figure. Lettering will be added by the Press.

Figures copied, with permission, from other sources can be incorporated with their own lettering and the source acknowledged. The positions of Figures and Tables should be indicated.

References

References should be listed in alphabetical order at the end of the text. Names of journals should not be abbreviated, and full titles of papers and first and last page numbers should be given. All references listed must be cited in the text, giving author and date, and if more than one paper is cited for one year the letters a, b, etc. follow the date. For up to three authors all names should be given in the first citation and the first name with et al. subsequently. For more than three authors, et al. is to be used in all citations. Authors should consult a recent issue of the Journal for style.

Proof Reading

The first proof is sent out in page form and as few alterations as possible should be made in it. Manuscripts should be returned to the Editor with corrected proofs. An addendum of not more than 1000 words dealing with recently published work may be sent to the Editor with the first corrected proof.

Offprints

100 offprints of each article will be supplied free to each first named author. Extra offprints may be purchased from the Society if ordered at proof stage.
