Please submit your manuscript on diskette with three hardcopies and retain a copy for yourself. The manuscript should conform to the journal style described below. The manuscript will be evaluated by at least two referees. Each manuscript will be assigned to a subject editor who is responsible for the review process and correspondence with the author. Final acceptance for publication is acknowledged by the Editor-in-Chief. Upon acceptance of your manuscript, you will receive the form Manuscript Submission to be returned to the editor within five days.

Your manuscript will be destroyed three months after publication. Only appropriately marked originals will be returned. The publisher cannot be held responsible for any damage or loss through the mail.

3 Requirements for manuscripts

3.1 Format

The manuscript comprises a printout of the text and a list of all figures and tables with their captions and titles on a separate piece of paper. In anticipation of the online edition, we ask that you convey the essential information within the first 60 characters of the captions. Each figure, table, and bibliographic entry must have a reference in the text. Any corrections requested by the reviewer should be incorporated into the file.

Please use PC/Windows-compatible data carriers (diskette, etc.) only including those files needed for the current manuscript. Please include a list of the files, noting the file name, the computer program and its version number. Please do not import the figures into the text file. The text should be prepared using standard software (Microsoft Word, Word Perfect) or saved in rtf format; do not use automated or manual hyphenation. Please do not include footnotes.

For further information please consult
http://www.blackwellpublishing.com/authors/journal.asp

3.2 Form

Manuscripts begin with the title of the article, and the name(s) and full address(es) of the author(s). An e-mail address for the corresponding author should also be supplied. The title should be informative but as concise as possible. The article begins with a summary in English, including a translated title if the article is not in English. The summaries should cover the most important aims, results, and conclusions of the investigation. The main text must be double-spaced throughout and should be structured as follows: Introduction, Material and Methods, Results, Discussion, Acknowledgements, German and French translations of the summary (can be provided by the editors), and References. However, some flexibility in the layout of the paper is acceptable if deemed appropriate by the editors. Short communications must not exceed 6 manuscript pages including tables and references. They will be given priority for publication.

3.3 Units, abbreviations and nomenclature

Standard SI units should be used. Concentrations of solutions should be given in mol or in percentages, followed by either w/v or v/v, thus indicating whether the value refers to weight-per-volume or a volume-per-volume proportion. All biological and chemical names, and other technical terms should be given according to the most recent international nomenclature. Authorities should be mentioned once only at the point where the name first appears in the text. It is not necessary to mention authorities in the title or summaries, unless the article is specifically taxonomic. Botanical or zoological names should be typed in italics or underlined.

3.4 Illustrations and tables

The number and size of figures and tables should be limited to an essential minimum. The illustration of a specific point using both tables and figures is not acceptable. For all figures, high-quality originals must be submitted (reproducible artwork). All figures must be marked with the author's name, short title, and figure number. Authors wishing to include a colour illustration will be asked to contribute to the printing costs. Please use the CMYK colour palette (print colours), not RGB (monitor colours).

We would prefer to receive your artwork in electronic form. Please save vector graphics (e.g. line artwork) in Encapsulated Postscript Format (EPS), and bitmap files (e.g. half-tones) in Tagged Image File Format (TIFF). Detailed information on our digital illustration standards is available at
http://www.blackwellpublishing.com/authors/journal.asp.

There is a charge for alterations to figures when carried out by the publisher.

Please note that figures will generally be reduced to fit within the column-width or the print area. This means that numbering and lettering must still be readable when reduced (e.g. maps). In photomicrographs and microscopical drawings, magnification should be shown using a bar of the appropriate length, whose dimension is given in the caption. If a figure is to be cropped, please mark the lines on a photocopy or tracing paper. Printouts should be made with a laser-printer at the highest resolution (> 600 dpi). Colour photos can be reproduced in black and white (with a possible loss of contrast). Line drawings should only be contour drawings without halftones (shades of grey). Please do not use patterns; rough hatching is possible.

All figure captions should give a precise description of the content and should not be repeated within the figure. They should be typed on a separate sheet of paper. In the full-text online edition of the journal figure legends may be truncated in abbreviated links to the full screen version. Therefore the first 100 characters of any legend should inform the reader of key aspects of the figure.

All figures should be numbered on the reverse side. For composite figures involving a number of photographs do not attach the photographs to a sheet of paper, but send a photocopy indicating how the photographs should be displayed. The composition of the figure will be carried out electronically. Graphs with an x and y axis should not be enclosed in frames; only 2-dimensional representations, please. Do not forget the labels and units. Tables should be created using the table function.

3.5 References

Citations should be kept to a minimum. Only works cited in the text may be included in the reference list. Any unpublished work should be cited only in the text as a personal communication or as unpublished data. References must be listed alphabetically, based on the surname of the first author, and standard abbreviations for journals must be employed. In the following examples, please take note of the system of punctuation:

Carmer, S. G.; Walker, W. M., 1982: Baby bear's dilemma: a statistical tale. Agron. J. 74, 122-124.

Korhonen, K.; Piri, T., 1994: The main hosts and distribution of the S and P groups of Heterobasidion annosum in Finnland. In: Proc. 8th Int. Conf. You receive proofs of your article without the original manuscript (if no amendments have been made) and an offprint order form. Proofs should be corrected and returned at once. Please be sure that you can be reached during this time. Please note that only typesetting errors are to be corrected.

Offprints and complimentary copies will be sent to the corresponding or first-named author for distribution, unless otherwise noted on the order form. Additional orders for offprints can be placed at a later date for a higher price.

Books submitted for review are forwarded by the Editor-in-Chief to appropriate specialists for review. The review copy remains the property of the reviewer, but no royalty is paid. At the beginning of each book review, precise bibliographic details must be provided. Please note the system of punctuation in the following example:
