Instructions to Authors

INSTRUCTIONS TO AUTHORS. PREPARATION OF MANUSCRIPTS

Clinical Laboratory ( Abbreviation: Clin Lab)

Only manuscripts in English are accepted. Manuscripts, including figures, tables and figure legends, should be submitted in triplicate, one original and two copies. The text should be typed double-spaced, on one side of the paper, with a margin of 3 cm. The pages should be numbered consecutively beginning with the title page. Use a separate sheet of paper for each of the following sections: title page, summary and key words, text, acknowledgements, references, individual tables and figure legends, in that order.

Disks

We advise authors to submit the final version of the text on disk (only 3.5") in addition to the revised manuscript. Preferably use an IBM type of PC, MS DOS and "Word".

Title page

This should contain (1) the title of the article; (2) the first name, middle initial and last name of each author; (3) the academic affiliations of the authors; (4) the name(s) and adress(es) of author(s) responsible for correspondence and /or reprints; (5) the source of support and the form of grants or equipment. Present addresses of authors, if different, should be provided in a footnote.

Summary and key words

The second page should carry a summary of not more than 12 lines (no abbreviations to be used in the summary) and be followed by 3 to 6 indexing terms (key words). Your summary appears in English and German. Translation of the summary into German can be done by the Editorial Office.

Abbreviations

Use only standard abbreviations. The international system of units (SI) should be followed. Concentrations of solutes of known molecular weight should normally be stated in mol/l or recognized submultiples thereof (mmol/l, etc.). Other solutes should be expressed in g/l, mg/l, etc. Enzyme activities should be reported in U/l.

Text

The text should usually be divided into sections with the headings: Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion and Acknowledgements.
References should be numbered consecutively, with Arabic numerals in brackets, as they appear in the text, figures and tables.

Reference example

List all authors when six or less; when seven or more, list only first three and add et al.

Park BK, Ohnhaus EE. Urinary 6?hydroxycortisol: a simple, non-invasive index of enzyme induction in man. Clin Lab 1983; 29: 53-8

Books should be quoted as follows: Bohr H. On calcium metabolism during immobilization. In: Kuhlencordt F, Kruse H-P (eds) Calcium metabolism, bone and metabolic bone disease. Berlin Heidelberg New York: Springer, 1975: 39-42

Key references only should be given, and exhaustive lists will not be accepted. Few original communications justify more than 30 references. Reviews may contain more references.

Tables

Type each table on a separate sheet. Tables should be numbered consecutively with Arabic numerals. A short descriptive heading should be given above each table and footnotes and/or explanations below. Please prepare your tables in "Word" or by the "grid" system. Do not use the Tab key for tables.

Illustrations

Submit three complete sets of figures (1 original set with photographs, 13 cm x 18 cm black and white; two sets of copies). Illustrations in color will be published only if the author pays for the extra cost involved. lf possible, use cdr. or tif. files for storage of figures on Disks.

For more detailed information on manuscripts see:

International Committee of Medical Journal Editors. Uniform requirements for manuscripts submitted to biomedical journals. Brit Med J 1991; 302:338-41.

Proofs

To ensure fastest possible publication, proofs are sent to authors by air mail and must be corrected and returned as soon as possible. lf this is not done, the paper will be passed for publication with house corrections only.

Proof-reading must be limited to the correction of typographical errors. Any other changes involve time-consuming and expensive work and must be charged to the authors.

Reprints

Three copies of the Journal will be supplied free of charge. Reprints can be ordered at quoted prices. The order form, which is sent along with the proofs, must be completed and returned with the corrected proofs.

The manuscripts are sent to 2 reviewers and published as soon as possible after acceptance.

"Letters to the Editor" or "Short technical notes" are manuscripts up to 3 type-written pages of 60 lines each.

Manuscripts should be sent to: Prof. Dr. H. Schmidt-Gayk, Im Breitspiel 15, D-69126 Heidelberg, Germany
