About the journal

In December this year, the Bulletin of the Mexican Geological Society celebrates its 110th anniversary. This celebration comes accompanied with the acceptance of the journal into the Science Citation Index, please stay tuned to our activities.

The Boletín de la Sociedad Geológica Mexicana is a completely free-access electronic journal published semi-annually that publishes papers and technical notes with its main objective to contribute to an understanding of the geology of Mexico, of its neighbor areas, and of geologically similar areas anywhere on Earth’s crust. Geology has no boundaries so we may publish papers on any area of knowledge that is interesting to our readers.

We also favor the publication of papers on relatively unfamiliar subjects and objectives in mainstream journals, e.g., papers devoted to new methodologies or their improvement, and areas of knowledge that in the past had relatively little attention paid them in Mexican journals, such as urban geology, water management, environmental geology, and ore deposits, among others. Mexico is a land of volcanos, earthquakes, vast resources in minerals and petroleum, and a shortage of water. Consequently, these topics should certainly be of major interest to our readers, our Society, and society in general. Furthermore, the Boletín has been published since 1904; that makes it one of the oldest scientific journals currently active in Mexico and, most notably, its entire contents, from the first issue on, are available online.

Instructions to Authors

Instructions for Authors

We intend to publish original long research papers, called “artículos”, and short notes, called “notas técnicas”, book reviews, and general monographic reviews.

The Boletín de la Sociedad Geológica Mexicana publishes only electronic articles as a semi-annual free-access electronic journal, although our Society or Editorial Commitee may choose to publish any issue of the journal in a conventional paper format.

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS

1. Any manuscript can be submitted to any member of the Editorial Commitee via email as a file that includes text, tables and figures. PDF files are preferred, but MS Word files or similar formats are also accepted.

2. The manuscripts must be accompanied by a letter of submission confirming that it is an original contribution. This letter must also indicate whether or not the manuscript was rejected previously by another journal or publication; if so, an explanation for the rejection would be particularly helpful.

3. Manuscripts are accepted in Spanish or English. All pages, including the cover page, must be numbered and in addition to its page number, each figure(s) must have its own figure number visibly displayed.

4. All manuscripts are peer-reviewed by at least two referees. Acceptance or rejection of any manuscript will be an editorial decision based on the reviews that will include consideration of the basic importance, the originality and relevance of the contribution, as well as its conformance with the protocols of scientific publication

5. Manuscripts thus reviewed will be returned to the corresponding author who, in turn, will agree to contest the recommendations of the reviewers. Once corrected, the manuscript will be returned to the editor together with a letter explaining the changes made and, in the event of a disagreement with the reviewers, discussing the reasons for it. The editor may consider it necessary to repeat the review process, make further recommendations or to make the final decision for acceptance or rejection.

6. A manuscript will be accepted formally when the author submits the final version with text, table and figure files either in their original format or in the format that the editor requests

7. When the document is ready for publication, a proof will be sent to the author for a final check and typing corrections by e-mail.

8. Figures in color are accepted in the electronic edition of the Boletín. However, the Society or the Editorial Commitee may choose to publish any volume conventionally. If so, figures in color will be charged for. The authors must bear in mind that in such cases regarding this point they must either pay for each page in color or provide the figures in black and white / grayscale. Their paper will not be published conventionally until they make a decision regarding this point.

9. Any manuscript that is not in accordance with these rules will not be accepted. Revisions to arrive at this stage are encouraged. 10. Any reviewed manuscript that is not returned to the editor within the period of time he or she indicates may be rejected.

MANUSCRIPT FORMAT

If possible, the submitted manuscript will be organized as follows: Title; Author(s); Abstract in the language in which the manuscript is written (Spanish or English), and key words; Abstract in the other languange of the Boletín, and key words; Introduction; Description of the study area or technique, methodology, studied material; Results, Discussion and Conclusions; Acknowledg(e)ments; References; Tables; Figure captions; Figures.

Title

The title of the manuscript must be as brief, specific, and informative as possible. The initial letter of words that are not connectives will be capitalized. The complete names of fossils should be italicised. An additional short running title for page headers must be provided.

Authors

Please provide surname(s) and family name(s) for all authors, followed by their institution, city and zip code. Also provide the email address of the corresponding author.

Abstract

The abstract must be less than 500 words long in English and Spanish. The abstract presents a general overview of the research, refers to the methodology used, and highlights the most relevant results and conclusions. It must not contain abbreviations or bibliographic references.

Key words

The inclusion of 4 to 6 key words in both working languages below the respective abstracts is mandatory.

Text

The following requirements must be met when preparing a manuscript:

1. The author(s) must have a good command of the language of their choice, and no manuscript is accepted unless it is in strict compliance with the syntactical and grammatical rules of both languages. It is highly recommended that the manuscript be revised by a native speaker of the other language when it is not the mother tongue of the author(s).

2. The headings of the different sections of the manuscript must conform with the following categories:

1. First Level (No indentation, capital and small letters, bold)

1.1 Second level (No indentation, capital and small letters, plain text)

1.1.1 Third level (No indentation, capital and small letters, italics)

Fourth level. (0.8 cm left indentation, capital and small letters, italics, following text with no following space).

Although to facilitate reading excessive undercategorization is to be avoided in the event that additional subcategories are required, titles numbered 1), 2), 3), etc. can be used, and also an even lower category under a), b), c), etc. Such titles will be positioned at the beginning of each paragraph, and an 0.8 cm indent will be used.

3. The location by geographic coordinates and the identification of the sample on which chemical analyses, radiometric or paleontologic datations have been made must be provided.

4. Citations:

a. The authors must check that all cited references are presented correctly in the text and in the References.

b. In the text, only the family name(s) of the author(s) are used, as they appear in in the original work, with no first names or initials. They are set between parentheses and the name is separated by a comma from the year of publication, e.g., (Aguillón-Robles, 1994). If the name of the author is part of a sentence only the year will be written between parentheses, e.g., According to Aguillón-Robles (1994). More than one citation of the same authors in any one site will be separated by commas, and those with different author(s) by a semi-colon, e.g., (Persson, 1960a, 1960b; Molner and Sykes, 1969). In papers with more than two authors the citation will have the family name(s) of the first author followed by “et al.” in italics, e.g., (Carmichael et al., 1974). Citations in any one site in the text are in chronologic order and use letters a, b, c, etc. to distinguish citations from the same author(s) in any single year of publication

c) Personal communications should not be cited unless in the form of written communications.

Bibliographic references

In listing bibliographic references, the authors must:

1. Sort them in alphabetical order;

2. If more than one work by the same first author is presented:

a. list first the works with only one author in chronological order,

b. then list the works by the same first author and a co-author in alphabetical order considering the second author, and in chronological order,

c. if both authors co-authored more than one work, list the works of the same first author with more than one co-author in chronological order:

3. do not use abbreviations.

Tables

1. The tables with any one file must be on discrete sheets, and numbered in order.

2. The dimensions of the table must not exceed the printable size of the Boletín (17 x 24 cm) unless it is absolutely necessary to do so. Tables larger than that size which can be displayed in segments must be so separated before presentation. Although the Boletín is an electronic journal, some readers may prefer to print your article rather than use a PDF on the monitor, so all tables should fit the printing sizes of conventional printers.

3. The number and title of the table will be placed above it. The titles of the columns must be short with measuring units in parentheses.

4. Any additional explanation regarding a table (abbreviations, references, etc.) is included in footnotes below it.

5. References to tables in the text will be placed as Table X or (Table X).

Figure captions

Every figure must have a corresponding numbered figure caption that contains a short description. Such description is expected to be concise and to contain an explanation of all the symbols and abbreviations used in the figure. The figure captions will be presented consecutively in a separate sheet after the text in the electronic file.

Figures

1. All the figures (maps, graphs, drawings, and photographs) will be consecutively numbered, and included in the manuscript file in separate sheets with their numbering visible. When the manuscript is accepted for publication, the figures must be delivered as separate files in their original formats unless otherwise requested by the editor.

2. The figures must be clear and readable when fitted into the printing size of the Boletín (17 x 24 cm). Letter sizes and line thicknesses must stand an eventual size reduction of the figure. Use graphic scales instead of magnification factors, and include international measuring units. Patterns must have a distinct contrast between them and visible enough when applying size reduction into the printing size of the Boletín. Although the Boletín is an electronic journal, please consider that some readers may prefer to print your article rather than using a PDF, and thus all figures should fit the printing sizes of conventional printers.

3. The maps must have an indication pointing to the North, at least two longitude and latitude data, and graphic scale. Geographic locations and place names referred in the text must be present in the maps.

4. The photographs must be clear, have good contrast, and display the object of interest at a visible size.

5. The figures will be referred in the text as Figure X or (Figure X).

6. As the Boletín is only edited electronically, unlimited color figures are acceptable. However, it is important to note that some issues of the Boletín may be printed conventionally in paper upon request from the Sociedad Geológica Mexicana or decision from the Editorial Commitee. In such case, the authors will be requested to cover a $1,500.00 fee (Mexican Pesos) for each page that is printed in color, or provide black-and-white / grayscale figures instead.
