About the journal

 Cover

Published six times per year, the Scandinavian Journal of Public Health is an international forum for Nordic as well as international public health research and policy. The journal rises to the challenge of bringing theory and method closer to public health efforts. It reflects the healthy multidisciplinarity that has become characteristic of public health globally in recent years. The journal echoes today's challenges within public health as we face new and re-emerging diseases, changes in demography and the responses of health services to changing patterns of disease.

The Scandinavian Journal of Public Health has a vision to:

foster and disseminate valid results from public health endeavors

contribute to the conceptual and methodological developments of public health in terms of its:

efficacy,

cost effectiveness,

social, ethical and political implications

influence the current health research imbalance and give more priority to global health issues

Instructions to Authors

Note to Authors: please make sure your contact address information is clearly visible on the outside of all packages you are sending to Editors.***

PREPARING FOR SUBMISSION
Submitted manuscripts should be arranged according to "The Uniform requirements for manuscripts submitted to biomedical journals" published in Ann Intern Med 1997; 126: 36-47, or JAMA 1997; 277: 927-34. The full document is available at
www.icmje.org

When submitting a paper, the author should always make a full statement to the editor about all submissions and previous reports that might be regarded as redundant or duplicate publication of the same or very similar work.

Conflict of interest and funding: Authors are responsible for recognising and disclosing financial and other conflicts of interest that might bias their work. They should acknowledge in the manuscript all financial support for the work and other financial or personal connections to the work.

Statistics: A full description of the statistical methods used should be provided in the methods section. In statistical evaluation it is desirable to quote 95% confidence intervals.

Ethical considerations: All research on human subjects must have been approved by the appropriate ethics committee and must conform to the principles embodied in the Declaration of Helsinki (http://www.wma.net) as well as to the International Ethical Guidelines for Biomedical Research Involving Human subjects and the International Guidelines for ethical review for epidemiological studies (http://www.cioms.ch). An appropriate statement about ethical considerations, if applicable, should be included in the methods section of the paper.

SUBMISSION
The manuscript should be accompanied by a covering letter from the author responsible for relevant correspondence, containing a statement that the manuscript has been seen and approved by all authors.

Decisions on publication of full length original contributions are based on the assessment of at least two external reviewers. Authors are invited to suggest two suitable reviewers for their manuscript.

The journal publishes original articles, review articles, short communications and letters to the Editor.

One printed page takes about 800 words. Manuscripts exceeding six printed pages (including abstract, tables, figures and references) are rarely accepted. In such cases the authors should agree to pay a page charge of USD 100 per page.

Original articles and review articles of more than 3000 words are not encouraged and the absolute word limit is 4000 words. The word limit does not include text in the abstract, headings, references, figures and tables.

Short communications should not exceed 1200 words

Letters to the Editor should not exceed 800 words.

Manuscripts should be submitted in four complete sets-the original and three duplicates.

Electronic Manuscripts
The editors encourage submissions on diskette to facilitate rapid accessibility to the readers. The electronic files and the printouts must be identical. The diskette should be labelled with your name and the name of the computer platform and version of the word processing system you have used. Taylor & Francis can receive files from any word processing system; however, styled Microsoft Word files are preferred.

Please keep illustrations as separate files, e.g. EPS or TIFF. A simple guideline for preparing your electronic manuscript can be found at www.tandf.no/sjpublic.

Layout
Type the manuscript with double-spacing, allowing margins of at least 2.5 cm. Page 1 should bear: a brief but informative title; first name, middle initial, and surname of each author; institution( s) to which the author( s) is / are affiliated; name and address of author responsible for correspondence, and of author to whom requests for offprints should be sent.

Abstract. Page 2 should carry an abstract of no more than 250 words structured according to Aims, Methods, Results and Conclusions. List up to ten key words below the abstract, using terms from the Medical Subject headings list from Index Medicus whenever possible. Provide a word count for the whole manuscript, excluding the abstract, references, figures and tables.

Text. Organise the main text under such suitable headings as Background, Aims, Methods, Results, Discussion, Conclusions, Acknowledgements and References, with figure captions and tables separate. Begin each of the following sections on a new page: title page, abstract, main text, acknowledgements, references, individual tables and list of figure captions. Appendices and footnotes in the text are not allowed.

References
A maximum of 30 references, except for review articles, are to be listed separately, numbered consecutively in the order in which they are first mentioned in the text (arabic numerals in parentheses). They are to follow the Vancouver style as described in "The Uniform requirements for manuscripts submitted to Biomedical Journals". Note that non-English titles must include a translation within brackets.

Authorship
All authors must have contributed substantially to conception and design or analysis and interpretation of the data, drafting or revision of content, and approval of the final version.

Acknowledgements
Acknowledge only persons who have made substantive contributions to the study. Authors are responsible for obtaining permission from everyone acknowledged by name. The source of grant support should also be acknowledged and any conflict of interest indicated.

Early Electronic Offprints: Corresponding authors can now receive their article by e-mail as a complete PDF. This allows the author to print up to 50 copies, free of charge, and disseminate them to colleagues. In many cases this facility will be available up to two weeks prior to publication. Or, alternatively, corresponding authors will receive the traditional 50 offprints. A copy of the journal will be sent by post to all corresponding authors after publication. Additional copies of the journal can be purchased at the author’s preferential rate of ?5.00/$25.00 per copy.

Figures and tables
Full length articles can have a maximum of five tables and/or figures. Short communications should have no more than three tables and/or figures.

Figures should be professionally designed. Mark the back of each figure with its number, author's name and the Journal's initials (SJPH). Type figure captions on a separate sheet.

Tables should be on sheets separate from the text and should be self-explanatory. Type the key to abbreviations and symbols plus any other explanatory text in footnote form-not in the heading, which should be kept brief. Number tables consecutively with roman numerals. Construct the tables so as to fit in one or two columns. Frequency tables must contain absolute sample sizes. Omit internal horizontal and vertical rules.

Supplements
Thematic sets of papers, symposium reports as well other documents of Public Health relevance may be published as supplements, the full cost being borne by the authors. Contact the Managing Editor for further information.
