Traffic covers the cell biology and biochemistry of intracellular transport in health and disease and aims to publish manuscripts at the forefront of this field. Specific topics of focus include membrane protein and lipid traffic, intracellular motility, protein transport across membranes, membrane protein assembly and degradation, antigen processing, and the structure, function and regulation of molecules involved in these pathways. Infectious and hereditary diseases with intracellular pathogenesis affecting these processes are also a major focus.
Traffic publishes cutting-edge research and review articles dealing with structural biology, cell biology, protein biochemistry, molecular biology, morphology, intracellular signalling and genetic and infectious diseases in the following areas, for mammalian and non-mammalian systems:

Submission of Research Articles
Traffic will consider manuscripts of any length with significant scientific content that conforms to the style outlined below. QuickTime movies or other supplemental materials can be published on the Traffic Web site, and must be included at the time of submission. Authors must provide a letter of permission for any personal communication, and permission from the copyright holder for the use of any material previously published. Authors may suggest potential reviewers and/or identify persons to be excluded as reviewers for professional reasons at the time of initial submission.
Electronic Submission of Manuscripts
Manuscripts can be submitted to and reviewed by Traffic entirely electronically (no hard copies are necessary until the manuscript is accepted). Electronic manuscripts can be submitted either as a PDF file (both text and figures, contact the editorial office for help in making the PDF file if necessary). Alternatively, the text can be submitted as a Word document and the figures submitted as JPEG, GIF, TIF or EPS files (figures in PowerPoint are not suitable). Organization of Research Articles
¡¤ Title must be concise and contain no more than 100 characters including spaces. The title page should include a running title of no more than 50 characters; 5-10 key words, complete names of institutions for each author; and the name, address, phone number, fax number and e-mail address for the corresponding author.
¡¤ Abbreviations Traffic adheres to the conventions outlined in Units, Symbols and Abbreviations: A guide for medical and scientific editors and authors. Non-standard abbreviations must be used 3 or more times and written out completely in the text when first used.
¡¤ Abstract is limited to 200 words in length and should not contain abbreviations. References must be cited in full.
¡¤ Introduction should be focused; exhaustive literature reviews are not appropriate.
¡¤ Results and Discussion can be combined (particularly for short communications) or can be written as separate sections.
¡¤ Materials and Methods must contain sufficient detail such that, in combination with the references cited, all experiments reported can be fully reproduced.
¡¤ Acknowledgments Traffic requires that all sources of institutional, private and corporate financial support for the work within the manuscript must be fully acknowledged, and any potential conflicts of interest noted
¡¤ References should be cited in the text parenthetically by number, listed at the end of the manuscript in the order cited and include only articles that have been published or are currently in press. 'In press' manuscripts that are necessary to understand and evaluate the submitted manuscript must be included at the time of submission. Traffic uses the Vancouver style of references that is outlined below. In all cases, the author list should be abbreviated to et al. after 15 authors, and the journal name, volume and page numbers replaced by the statement 'In Press' where appropriate.

¡¤ Figures All figures should be planned to fit within either 1 column width (8cm), 1.5 column widths (13 cm) or 2 column widths (17 cm), and must be suitable for photocopy reproduction from the printed version of the manuscript. The editors recommend using the guidelines below.
¡¤ After reduction for publication uppercase text and numbers should be at least 1.5-2 mm high (10 point Helvetica).
¡¤ After reduction symbols should be at least 2¨C3 mm high (10 point).
¡¤ All half-tone photographs should be submitted at final reproduction size.
¡¤ Figures in PowerPoint are not suitable for reproduction.

¡¤ Figure Legends and Tables should be a separate section of the manuscript. Tables should be double-spaced with no vertical rulings, with a single bold ruling beneath the column titles. Units of measure must be included in the column title.
¡¤ Submission of Supplementary Materials (i.e. movie clips, reference databases). Supplementary video clips may be submitted by FTP (see directions above) or on 100 MB Zip, DVD or CD-ROM disk for inclusion on the Traffic web site as self-contained and flattened QuickTime movies. Video clips must be referenced in the text and representative micrographs included in the print version of Traffic. Movie clips should not be larger than 5 MB, and run no longer than 1 minute.
Review Articles, Toolbox, Transit Authority, Traffic Interchange, Traffic Report Articles and Case Reports
Traffic welcomes proposals for alternative types of articles or correspondence in the following categories:
¡¤ Reviews should be focused (4,000 word maximum with judicious use of references, less than 50), represent a critical and balanced view of the field, and will be subject to editorial approval.
¡¤ Toolboxes are either a methodological resource/review or a general reference database. They should compile information or review methodological advances. Toolboxes are not intended as a primary publication.
¡¤ Transit Authorities are brief commentaries of interest to the readership of Traffic, and can be up to1500 words long
¡¤ Traffic Interchanges discuss current issues or controversies, and should not be more than 1500 words.
¡¤ Traffic Reports are meeting reports, and can be up to 1500 words long.
¡¤ Case Reports are original research articles on clinical cases relevant to intracellular transport.
Proposals should be directed to the Editors or Managing Editor. Figures and references should conform to the conventions of Traffic as described above.
Cover submissions
Authors are encouraged to submit original micrographs, molecular structures or graphic art for consideration as cover art. Submission of cover art is not limited to authors. Black and white or color images can be submitted, should be trimmed to fit into the photograph area of the cover (20.2-cm wide, 16-cm high), supplied at full size and accompanied by a cover legend. Pictures accepted for covers will be copyrighted, and will be made available in the Traffic web site photo gallery.
Publication Schedule
Papers that do not conform to the general aim and scope of the journal will be returned immediately without review. All other manuscripts will be reviewed by experts in the field. Traffic aims to forward reviewer's comments and to inform the corresponding author of the result of the review process within 3 weeks of submission. Revised manuscripts will be considered at the discretion of the editors, and may be subject to re-review. Manuscripts will be considered for "fast track publication" under special circumstances after consultation with the Editors.
Distribution of Material
Publication of a research article in Traffic dictates that all materials described in the published paper will be made available to the academic scientific community. Nucleic acid and amino acid sequences, as well as X-ray crystallographic data, must be deposited and made accessible in the appropriate database.
Copyright Assignment
Authors submitting a paper do so on the understanding that the work has not been published before, is not being considered for publication elsewhere, and has been read and approved by all of the authors. If and when a manuscript or cover art is accepted for publication in Traffic, authors must agree to assign exclusive copyright, which covers translation rights and the exclusive right to reproduce and distribute all of the articles printed in the journal, to Blackwell Munksgaard. No material published in the journal may be stored on microfilm or videocassettes, or in electronic databases and the like without written permission of the publisher.

Page Charges
Upon acceptance of an original research manuscript the authors will be charged $500 for manuscripts with only black and white figures, and $1000 for manuscripts with color figures. Authors need to complete a Publication Charge and Colour Work Agreement form to confirm their agreement to pay these charges.
