4. MANUSCRIPT TYPES ACCEPTED
Original Articles: The Journal considers articles on curriculum development, teaching methodologies, assessment strategies or techniques, and quality assurance in the fields of dental undergraduate and postgraduate education and dental auxiliary personnel training. This includes the dental educational aspects of the basic medical sciences, the behavioural sciences, the interface with medical education, information technology, distance learning and educational audit. Papers embodying the results of high-quality educational research of relevance to dentistry are particularly encouraged as are evidence-based reports of novel and established educational programmes and their outcomes.
Commentaries: The Journal considers commentaries which are either invited personally by the Editor or submitted on issues relevant to dental education, which are considered to be of interest to the readership. If authors are considering the submission of an uninvited Commentary, they are advised to seek guidance from the Editorial Office at an early stage.
Book Reviews: The Journal will consider providing book reviews where the topics presented are of relevance to dental education.
Guest Editorial: Guest Editorials will be solicited by the editor.
5. MANUSCRIPT FORMAT AND STRUCTURE
5.1. Format
Language: The language of publication is English. Authors for whom English is a second language must have their manuscript professionally edited by an English speaking person before submission to make sure the English is of high quality. It is preferred that manuscript is professionally edited. A list of independent suppliers of editing services can be found at http://authorservices.wiley.com/bauthor/english_language.asp. All services are paid for and arranged by the author, and use of one of these services does not guarantee acceptance or preference for publication
Abbreviations, Symbols and Nomenclature: Use only standard abbreviations. All units will be metric. Use no roman numerals in the text. In decimals, use a decimal point and not a comma. Consult the CBE style manual: - a guide for authors, editors and publishers in the biological sciences, 4th edition, Arlington, VA, 1978. Avoid abbreviations in the title. The full term for which an abbreviation stands should precede its first use in the text unless it is a standard unit of measurement.
5.2. Structure All manuscripts submitted to European Journal of Dental Education should follow the Uniform requirements for manuscripts submitted to biomedical journals: International Committee of Medical Editors. Uniform requirements for manuscripts submitted to biomedical journals. Br Med J 1988: 296; 401-405. All manuscripts should include: Title page, abstract, main text (see below), references and tables, figures, figure legends and acknowledgments, if necessary.
Title Page: should provide the title of the paper and a running title of no more than 50 characters, the names and institutional affiliations of all authors and at least two keywords. As the journal conveys blinded reviews, the title page must be uploaded independently.
Abstract: should be no more than 250 words in length and should follow the same headings as the main text.
Main Text of Original Articles: should include introduction, materials and methods, results, discussion and conclusions. This structure may vary from this format if the article is a report of, for example, new curricular design or provides an academic commentary on a dental educational issue.
Introduction: the background and essential research questions should be laid out clearly and succinctly, with detailed reference to the published literature, culminating in the reasons for the necessity of the work and what it hoped to achieve..
Materials and Methods: there should be a concise description of precisely how the study was performed, including reference to any copyrighted material or service that was employed, which methods of analysis were chosen and how these were used.
Results: should be presented clearly and systematically, so that the reader is able to gauge the outcomes of the study and see their relevance. The use of tables and figure should be complementary to the written text, providing detail and framework, rather than duplication of the written word .
Discussion: should contextualise the relevance of the results in light of the published literature and seek to position the study in its rightful place, explaining its meaning and providing a critical appraisal of any answers it provided. Clearly, it needs to address whether the research questions have been addressed.
Conclusion: a short summary statement should be provided that provides an overview of the work.
Main Text of Commentaries No firm guidance can be given on the format of Commentaries, as this will vary depending upon content and purpose. Authors are recommended to seek individual guidance from the Editorial Office at an early stage of development of such an article.
Acknowledgements: Please specify contributors to the article other than the authors accredited and any disclosure of conflict of interest, if applicable. Please also disclose any possible conflict of interest. These include financial interests (for example patent, ownership, stock ownership, consultancies, speaker's fee).
5.3. References The Journal follows the Vancouver referencing system.
We recommend the use of a tool such as EndNote or Reference Manager for reference management and formatting. EndNote reference styles can be searched for here: or www.endnote.com/support/enstyles.asp. Reference Manager reference styles can be searched for here: www.refman.com/support/rmstyles.asp.
Number references consecutively in the order in which they appear first in the text. Identify references in text, tables and legends by Arabic numerals (in parentheses). List all references cited, and only these, at the end of the manuscript. Abbreviate journal titles according to Index Medicus. Use the full titles for unlisted journals. Please see below for examples:
a. Standard journal article (List all authors where 6 or less, otherwise list only the first 3 and add et al) Allen DL, Finnegan N. A perspective of dental education in the twenty-first century. Br Dent J 1989: 166: 269-270.

5.4. Tables, Figures and Figure Legends
Figures: All figures and artwork must be provided in electronic format. Please save vector graphics (e.g. line artwork) in Encapsulated Postscript Format (EPS) and bitmap files (e.g. half-tones) or clinical or in vitro pictures in Tagged Image Format (TIFF).
Preparation of Electronic Figures for Publication: Although low quality images are adequate for review purposes, print publication requires high quality images to prevent the final product being blurred or fuzzy. Submit EPS (lineart) or TIFF (halftone/photographs) files only. MS PowerPoint and Word Graphics are unsuitable for printed pictures. Do not use pixel-oriented programmes. Scans (TIFF only) should have a resolution of 300 dpi (halftone) or 600 to 1200 dpi (line drawings) in relation to the reproduction size (see below). Please submit the data for figures in black and white or submit a colourwork agreement form. EPS files should be saved with fonts embedded (and with a TIFF preview if possible).
For scanned images, the scanning resolution (at final image size) should be as follows to ensure good reproduction: lineart: >600 dpi; half-tones (including gel photographs): >300 dpi; figures containing both halftone and line images: >600 dpi.
Further information can be obtained at Blackwell Publishing's guidelines for figures: http://authorservices.wiley.com/bauthor/illustration.asp.
Check your electronic artwork before submitting it: http://authorservices.wiley.com/bauthor/eachecklist.asp.
Permissions: If all or parts of previously published illustrations are used, permission must be obtained from the copyright holder concerned. It is the author's responsibility to obtain these in writing and provide copies to the Publishers.
Colour Charges: It is the policy of European Journal of Dental Education for authors to pay the full cost for the reproduction of their colour artwork. Therefore, please note that if there is colour artwork in your manuscript when it is accepted for publication, Blackwell Publishing require you to complete and return a Colour Work Agreement Form before your paper can be published. Any article received by Blackwell Publishing with colour work will not be published until the form has been returned. If you are unable to access the internet, or are unable to download the form, please contact the Production Editor, Enrico Jay Ventura, for a form. The Colour Work Agreement Form should be sent to Production Editor Enrico Jay Ventura at the address below:
