About the journal

Theoretical Medicine and Bioethics provides a forum for interdisciplinary studies in the philosophy and methodology of medical practice and research. Matters of particular interest are the developments of the philosophy and methodology of clinical judgment and clinical decision making; the study of problems of medical language, of knowledge acquisition and of theory formation in medicine; the analysis of the structure and dynamics of medical hypotheses and theories; the discussion and clarification of basic medical concepts and issues; the application to medicine of advanced methods in the general philosophy of science, classical and non-classical logics, and mathematics; and the study of the interplay between medicine and other scientific or social institutions. Particular attention is paid to heuristic approaches in developing new methods and tools for the better analysis and understanding of the conceptual and ethical presuppositions of the medical sciences and health care processes.

Theoretical Medicine and Bioethics is an important communication medium in the area of the philosophy and methodology of medicine and, as such, offers comprehensive bibliographies, reviews of significant literature, information about current scholarly activities in the field, including partial proceedings of selected meetings, and an opinions section for readers' commentaries.

Manuscript Presentation

The journal is published in the English language only. Please submit all manuscripts in English.

The Chicago Manual of Style, 14th edition, is the general guide for all matters of style. Authors are advised to consult the manual for answers to their questions regarding style. However, in general, manuscripts presented to Theoretical Medicine and Bioethics should include the following:

Title Page

running head (shortened title)

title

author(s)

affiliation(s)

full address for correspondence, including telephone and fax number and e−mail address

Abstract and Key Words

The abstract should be between 100−250 words. It should not contain any undefined abbreviations or unspecified references. There should also be 5 to 10 key words or short phrases placed in alphabetical order on the bottom of the abstract page.

Abbreviations

Abbreviations should be explained at first occurrence.

Section Headings

First, second, third, and fourth−order headings should be clearly distinguishable but not numbered.

Appendices

Supplementary material should be collected in an Appendix and placed before the Notes and References section.

Notes and Bibliography

Please supply both Notes and a Bibliography. Use endnotes rather than footnotes. However, you should not use the endnote or footnote command on the word processor program. The numbers for the notes should be placed in superscript inside the text. Notes and bibliography should be typed double−spaced in a separate section, and numbered consecutively. They will be printed at the end of the paper. The first mention of the book or journal article should offer complete bibliographical information. All subsequent references to the same book or journal article in the endnotes should indicate the author and reference the first citation in the notes (e.g. Smith, cited in n. 3, above).

Example of Notes:

John Smith, Urban Turmoil: The Politics of new Hope (New City: Polis Publishing Co., 1986).

Penelope Wise, ``Money Today: Two Cents for a Dollar,' No Profit Review 2 (1987): 123−142.

Smith, cited in n. 1, above.

Example of Bibliography: (IN ALPHABETICAL ORDER)

Alexandre, Aimee. The Myth of Tolstoy. Edited and translated by D. Luscombe. Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1971.

Anscombe, G.E.M. ``Modern Moral Philosophy.' Philosophy 33 (1958): 1−19.

Since reviews are double−blind, self−identifying citations and references in the article text should either be avoided or left blank when manuscripts are first submitted. Authors are responsible for reinserting self−identifying citations and references when manuscripts are prepared for final submission.

Acknowledgements

Acknowledgements of people, grants, funds, etc. should be placed in a separate section before the notes and bibliography.

Figures

All photographs, graphs and diagrams should be referred to as a 'Figure' and they should be numbered consecutively (1, 2, etc.). Multi-part figures ought to be labelled with lower case letters (a, b, etc.). Please insert keys and scale bars directly in the figures. Relatively small text and great variation in text sizes within figures should be avoided as figures are often reduced in size. Figures may be sized to fit approximately within the column(s) of the journal. Provide a detailed legend (without abbreviations) to each figure, refer to the figure in the text and note its approximate location in the margin. Please place the legends in the manuscript after the references.

Tables
Each table should be numbered consecutively (1, 2, etc.). In tables, footnotes are preferable to long explanatory material in either the heading or body of the table. Such explanatory footnotes, identified by superscript letters, should be placed immediately below the table. Please provide a caption (without abbreviations) to each table, refer to the table in the text and note its approximate location in the margin. Finally, please place the tables after the figure legends in the manuscript.

Proofs

Proofs will be sent to the corresponding author. One corrected proof, together with the original, edited manuscript, should be returned to the Publisher within three days of receipt by mail (airmail overseas).

Offprints

25 offprints of each article will be provided free of charge. Additional offprints can be ordered by means of an offprint order form supplied with the proofs.

Page Charges and Colour Figures

No page charges are levied on authors or their institutions. Colour figures are published at the author's expense only.

Copyright

Authors will be asked, upon acceptance of an article, to transfer copyright of the article to the Publisher. This will ensure the widest possible dissemination of information under copyright laws.

Permissions

It is the responsibility of the author to obtain permission to quote from works in copyright. See ``fair use' in the University of Chicago Manual of Style.

Review Procedures

Editor's review: 1−2 weeks

If sent out for peer−review: 4−6 weeks

Editorial review of referees comments: 1−2 weeks
