About the journal
In 1998, Genitourinary Medicine changed its title to Sexually Transmitted Infections to emphasise the true content and international nature of the journal.
Sexually Transmitted Infections remains the oldest journal in the field dealing with issues of sexual health, sexually transmitted diseases, and HIV.
First published in 1925, the journal attracts original articles on the clinical, microbiological, behavioural, epidemiological, social, and historical aspects of sexually transmitted diseases, including viral infections such as HIV and AIDS, human papillomavirus, herpes simplex virus, and the sexually transmissible hepatitis viruses.
Sexually Transmitted Infections currently has an impact factor of 2.181.

Instructions to Authors
Papers for publication will be accepted on the understanding that they have not been, and will not be, published elsewhere. Publication of abstracts (fewer than 500 words) presented at national and international meetings is excepted. Submitted papers must be accompanied by the following statement: "No paper resembling the enclosed article has been or will be published except in Sexually Transmitted Infections". All authors of accepted papers are asked to grant Sexually Transmitted Infections an exclusive licence to publish the article in all media.
All manuscripts should now be submitted via Bench>Press, however, if you are unable to do so, please send the manuscript electronically via email (mdimler@bmjgroup.com) or on a floppy disk to the Editorial Office. Manuscripts should be typed in double line space and paginated, with the name, postal and e-mail address of a corresponding author clearly marked on the title page.?/font>

A hanging committee, the membership of which is published in each issue and whose meetings are open to readers and authors, will examine all manuscripts. The hanging committee will select articles, including commissioned articles, for peer review. Rejected papers will not be returned. Figures will be returned if requested at the time of submission.
Authors should keep the raw data upon which the manuscript is based for at least 2 years and may be requested to produce these for examination by the hanging committee. Authors are encouraged to read the CME articles published in Genitourinary Medicine volumes 72 and 73. These cover the most important points regarding the validity of various forms of research.
Authors must conform to the uniform requirements for manuscripts submitted to biomedical journals (JAMA 1997;277927-34). Brief details follow:
Manuscripts
Manuscripts including correspondence and book reviews, must be typewritten in triplicate on one side of the paper in double spacing with 2.5 cm margins.
Title Page
The title page should include a (brief) title, list of authors, address for correspondence, telephone and fax numbers, an email address, and a word count. The text should be divided into appropriate sections: introduction, methods, results, discussion, acknowledgments, references, tables (each on a separate sheet), and legends for illustrations. The introduction should be brief (maximum of three paragraphs) and not duplicate the discussion section. Type a structured abstract (<250 words) on a separate sheet, under the headings of objectives, methods (including study design, selection methods, and interventions), results, and conclusions followed by up to three keywords suitable for use in indexing.
Authors
Authors should include only people who have made a direct contribution to the project. List the exact contribution to the manuscript of each author at the end of the text.
Conflict of Interest
State only the institution(s) where work was done by each author. Identify the sources of funding. Declare any conflict of interest.
SI Units
Use only SI units. If imperial units are used, give SI units in parentheses or, for tables and figures, add a conversion factor as a footnote.
Abbreviations
Keep abbreviations to a minimum, and only use recognised ones. Give others in full the first time they appear in the text.
Acknowledgements
Limit acknowledgments to workers whose courtesy or help extended beyond their paid work, and to supporting organisations.
Figures
Number figures in the order in which they are first mentioned in the text. Type captions on a separate page. Authors will have to pay a small charge for colour figures. Photomicrographs must have internal scale markers.
Black and white images
Black and white images (photographs, line drawings, graphs etc.) should be saved and supplied as:
TIFF, GIF, or high quality JPEG files to a minimum of 300 dpi.
Colour images
Colour images should be saved and supplied as:
TIFF, GIF, or high quality JPEG files to a minimum of 600 dpi.
Colour images should not exceed 2MB at a minimum resolution of 600 dpi. If you choose a higher resolution your image dimension should be reduced accordingly to keep the file under 2MB.
NB Scanners may automatically increase image size at a higher resolution.
Powerpoint files
SINGLE PAGE Powerpoint files can be submitted. Please submit ONE slide per file ONLY.
Alternatively Powerpoint files can be saved as JPEG or TIFF files and submitted as a single image file.
ALL IMAGES SHOULD BE SUBMITTED TO BENCH>PRESS AS SEPARATE FILES AND
NOT EMBEDDED IN THE MANUSCRIPT TEXT. Wherever possible colour images should be supplied digitally. These should be on formatted floppy disks as TIFF files, preferably at a minimum resolution of 600 dpi or high quality JPEG files along with at least one hard copy of the figure.
Tables
Tables should be submitted in the same format as your article and embedded in the article.
Please note: Bench>Press CANNOT accept Excel files. If your table(s) are in Excel, copy and paste them into the manuscript file (where cited is preferable). In extreme circumstances, Excel files can be uploaded as supplementary files; however, we advise against this as this will not be acceptable if your article is accepted for publication.
Tables should be self-explanatory, and the data they contain must not be duplicated in the text or figures.
Statistical Methods
State clearly the statistical methods used. Authors are strongly advised to seek expert statistical advice. Manuscripts may be sent to a statistical reviewer at the discretion of the reviewer or editor.
References
Number references consecutively the first time they are cited and identified by arabic numbers in the text, tables, and legends to figures. References should be in the Vancouver style (BMJ 1982;284:1766-70). Authors are responsible for the accuracy of their references. References should be typed in numerical order, and should include the following details
Journals
author's name and initials, title of paper, name of journal (in full or abbreviated according to the list in Index Medicus), year of publication, volume number, and first and last page numbers
Books
author's name and initials, full title, edition, place of publication, publisher, and year of publication.
When a chapter in a book is referred to, the name and initials of the author of the chapter, title of the chapter, "In:", name and initials of the editor, and "ed" should precede book title, etc as above.
When there are more than three authors the names of the first three should be given followed by et al.
Names of journals no longer published or not in Index Medicus should be given in full, for example, British Journal of Venereal Diseases or Genitourinary Medicine.
Randomised controlled trials
Randomised controlled trials should be reported in the format suggested by the Revised CONSORT statement published in JAMA (2001;285:1987-91)
Patient Consent
Consent: All trials involving patients or human volunteers must have ethics committee approval, which must be explicitly stated in the paper. Volunteers must have given written informed consent. All case reports must have the consent of the patient for publication. When reporting on deceased patients make certain that they cannot be identified. Manuscripts not meeting these criteria will be rejected
Ethics
Authors of manuscripts dealing with race and ethnicity are encouraged to refer to, "Ethnicity, race and culture: guidelines for research, audit and publication," BMJ 1996;312:1094.
Manuscript Length
Length of articles: limitation of space means that the journal encourages brevity. Manuscripts longer than suggested in the table will only be published if warranted by their content. Additional data which may be of interest to specialised readers can be kept in the journal office or placed on STI Online for reference or retrieval.
Proofs
Contributors receive one proof, and should read it carefully for printers' errors and check the tables, figures, legends, and any numerical, mathematical, or other scientific expressions. Alterations should be kept to a minimum.

Online submission using Bench>Press
Please note: the following instructions apply to submission via Bench>Press only. Manuscripts must still adhere to the standard layout guidelines above.
Registering with Bench>Press
Users are required to register with the system when accessing the system for the first time. Click on ‘CREATE A NEW ACCOUNT? You will be asked to complete 3 steps:
1. ?Email/Password:
Enter your email address: This is your unique user identification and will be needed to log into the system on ALL occasions.
Enter a password: This will be encrypted for security reasons, and will not be known to either the STI editorial office or HighWire Press. If you forget your password you will need to click on ‘I HAVE FORGOTTEN MY PASSWORD?and follow the steps outlined.?br> Choose a ‘password hint?question and provide an answer: You will need to provide this answer if you forget your password.
Please note: a single password will be created which applies to ALL journals using the Bench>Press online submission and tracking system. Once you have registered for your first journal, you do not need to re-register in order to use another journal's system. Simply log in with your existing email address and password.
2. ?Verification:
An email containing an URL will be emailed to you. Click on the URL. You email address will then be verified. This helps ensure that your email address is not being used fraudulently.
3. ?Profile:
You will then be asked to provide a basic profile consisting of your contact information, plus expertise terms. Although you may use the same e-mail address and password to access any journal using the Bench>Press system, you must create an individual profile with each journal.

Submitting a manuscript
To submit a manuscript enter the author area and click on the "SUBMIT A NEW MANUSCRIPT" hyperlink. You will be presented with a series of fields for entering your manuscript metadata and the uploading of your text and figure files. Supplemental data can also be uploaded. The system will automatically convert your files to a single PDF for reviewing purposes. You will be asked to approve the conversion before it is considered formally submitted to the journal. The conversion process can take up to a maximum of 15 minutes; an email will be sent informing you when the conversion is complete. Click on ‘SUBMISSIONS READY FOR YOU TO PROOF?in the Author area to approve your article. During conversion the system will automatically hyperlink the references to Medline and/or the journal the article was published in (if the journal is hosted on the web by HighWire Press). Please ensure you include the heading "References" at the top of the citations for optimum linkage.
You are able to start your submission and continue the process on another occasion. By clicking on ‘SAVE/CONTINUE?at the bottom of the screen when entering your metadata enables you to save that page or continue to the next page. If you choose not to complete the submission on that occasion, the submission will appear in the ‘SUBMISSIONS IN PROGRESS?queue in the Author area. If you decide not to complete the submission at all please choose ‘WITHDRAW?
Please note:
- Do not include the cover letter in the body of the manuscript. This needs to be copied/pasted into the field available.
- If your paper does not include an abstract, please include the first paragraph of your article in the Abstract field.
- Supplemental files for upload may include: articles published/in press elsewhere; supplemental data; questionnaires, videos etc.
- Detailed help files are available throughout the process on Bench>Press.
File formats
Papers can be submitted in any standard word processing software, although Word is preferred.
Tables

Submitting a revision
To submit a revision enter the author area and click on ‘SUBMIT A REVISION/RESUBMISSION? You will be presented with your original manuscript metadata. This can be edited where necessary. You will then be required to upload your revised manuscript files (see Submitting a Manuscript for further details). Please include your response to the reviewers?comments in the letter to the editor.
Miscellaneous
- You can keep track of the status of your manuscript throughout the peer review process. Enter the Author area and click on ‘MANUSCRIPTS UNDER REVIEW (CHECK STATUS)?
- Any reviewers?comments on your article will be found in the Author area. Enter ‘MANUSCRIPTS WITH DECISIONS?and click on ‘REVIEWS? This will link you direct to any comment on your paper.
- An invitation to write an article for the journal will also be requested via the online tracking system. Enter the Author area and click on ‘REQUESTED COMMISSIONS? You can accept or decline the invitation online. When submitting your commissioned article, click on ‘ACCEPTED COMMISSIONS ?PAPERS TO BE SUBMITTED? The procedure for submission is the same as an unsolicited article (see Submitting a Manuscript).
