Instructions to Authors
General
1. Manuscripts (three copies) and correspondence should be addressed to the Editor-in-Chief, Professor K. Burke, Department of Geosciences, University of Houston, 312 Science and Research Building 1, Houston, TX 77204-5007, USA or the Deputy Editor-in-Chief, Dr A.J. Barber, Department of Geology, Royal Holloway, University of London, Egham, Surrey TW20 0EX, UK. 2. Papers should be original and comprise previously unpublished data, interpretations, or syntheses. Invited review papers will also be considered. 3. Papers should be in English, but if they concern the geology of a non-English speaking region, or if the one or more authors are resident in a non-English speaking country, they may include an abstract in an appropriate language which uses the Roman alphabet. 4. Papers should be less than 10,000 words equivalent although in special circumstances longer papers will be considered. 5. Papers will be reviewed by at least two referees. 6. Three copies of the text, tables and captions, typed using double-spacing on good-quality A4 paper should be submitted. At the time of first submission all illustrations should be in the form of glossy, black-and-white photographic prints at the suggested size for reproduction. Authors should retain an identical copy of their manuscripts. 7. All authors must sign the 'Transfer of Copyright' agreement before the article can be published. This transfer agreement enables Elsevier Science Ltd to protect the copyrighted material for the authors, but does not relinquish the author's proprietary rights. The copyright transfer covers the exclusive rights to reproduce and distribute the article, including reprints, photographic reproductions, microform or any other reproductions of similar nature and translations, and includes the right to adapt the article for use in conjunction with computer systems and programs, including reproduction or publication in machine-readable form and incorporation in retrieval systems. Authors are responsible for obtaining from the copyright holder permission to reproduce any figures for which copyright exists.
Text
1. The first text page should contain the title of the paper, the name(s) of the author(s), their institutional address(es), and an abstract not exceeding 200 words. Consult a recent issue for journal style. It should also contain a clear indication of the author to whom proofs and any further correspondence should be sent; otherwise all correspondence will be sent to the first named author at his institutional address. 2. The main text should follow and may be subdivided into primary and secondary sections. 3. Any acknowledgements should follow the main text and be headed Acknowledgements in the left-hand margin. 4. An alphabetical list of all literature cited in the text should follow and be headed "References". References in the text should appear as, e.g. (Pitcher and Bussell, 1977) or "according to Pitcher and Bussell (1977)". If more than two authors are involved, refer in the text to their work as e.g. "Sibson et al. (1975)"; in the reference list all authors should be named. All references listed in the references mentioned in the text should be listed in the reference list, and no references which are not mentioned in the text should be included in the reference list. It is the author's responsibility to check the text against the reference list in this respect. Names of periodicals should be presented in full. References in the alphabetical list should be in the form of,
Harrison, T.M., Leloup, P.H., Ryerson, F.J., Tapponnier, P., Lacassin R., Chen, W., 1995. Diachronous initiation of transtension along the Ailao Shan-Red River shear zone, Yunnan and Vietnam. In: Ann Yin, Harrison, T.M., (Eds.), The Tectonic Evolution of Asia. Cambridge University Press, pp. 208-226. Shi, G.R., Shen, Shu-zhong, 1998. A Changhsingian (Late Permian) brachiopod fauna from Son La, northwest Vietnam. Journal of Asian Earth Sciences 16, 501-511. Sudarmono, Suherman T., Eza, B., 1997. Paleogene basin development in Sundaland and its role to the petroleum systems in Western Indonesia. Proceedings of the Petroleum Systems of SE Asia and Australasia Conference. IPA, pp. 545-560. Wang, H., Dai, T., Fan, S., Yang, X, 1985. K-Ar dating of Hannouba basalts at Zhanjiakou. Geochimica 3, 206-215 (in Chinese with English Abstract).
5. Captions to Figures and Tables should be typed, double-spaced, as separate lists. All illustrations, including photographs, are called Figures, and should be referred to as Fig. throughout the text. 6. The text should be paginated from one onwards including the title/abstract page. 7. Dimensions-S.I. units are preferred. Use negative indices rather than / and leave space between symbols, e.g. m s-1, not ms-1 or m/s. 8. Footnotes should not be used. 9. Indicate in pencil in the left-hand margin the desired location of Figures and Tables. 10. Concise, well-prepared papers requiring a minimum of revision are likely to be published sooner than those needing extensive editing.
Mathematics
1. Authors must provide clear instructions about how they wish symbols to be set. The editors will supply a style sheet. 2. If your manuscript contains Greek or other non-Roman letters please indicate in words in the left-hand margin the name of the symbol the first time that it is used in your text. 3. Equations are generally introduced as parts of sentences: they require punctuation.
Tables
1. Tables should be numbered consecutively and given a suitable caption and each table typed on a separate sheet. 2. Footnotes to tables should be typed below the table and should be referred to by superscript lowercase letters. 3. No vertical rules should be used. 4. Tables should not duplicate results presented elsewhere in the manuscript, (e.g. in graphs). 5. References used in tables, should also be listed in the relevant table caption.
Illustrations
1. All illustrations should be provided in camera-ready form, suitable for reproduction (which may include reduction) without retouching. 2. Photographs, charts and diagrams are all to be referred to as "Figure(s)" and should be numbered consecutively in the order to which they are referred. They should accompany the manuscript, but should not be included within the text. 3. All illustrations should be clearly marked on the back with the figure number and the author's name. 4. All figures are to have a caption. Captions should be supplied on a separate sheet. 5. Line drawings: Good quality printouts on white paper produced in black ink are required. All lettering, graph lines and points on graphs should be sufficiently large and bold to permit reproduction when the diagram has been reduced to a size suitable for inclusion in the journal. Dye-line prints or photocopies are not suitable for reproduction. Do not use any type of shading on computer-generated illustrations. 6. Photographs: Original photographs must be supplied as they are to be reproduced (e.g. black and white or colour). If necessary, a scale should be marked on the photograph. Please note that photocopies of photographs are not acceptable. 7. Colour: A charge will be made to the author for part of the extra cost of reproducing illustrations in colour. If colour original figures are to be published in black and white, authors should pencil in B/W on the reverse of the figures. 8. References used in figures should also be listed in the relevant caption.
Electronic Submission
Authors should submit an electronic copy of their paper with the final version of the manuscript. The electronic copy should match the hardcopy exactly. Always keep a backup copy of the electronic file for reference and safety. Full details of electronic submission and formats can be obtained from http://authors.elsevier.com or from Author Services at Elsevier Science.
Proofs
1. Proofs will be sent to the author (first named author if no corresponding author is identified of multi-authored papers) and should be returned within 48 hours of receipt. 2. Corrections should be restricted to typesetting errors; any others may be charged to the author. 3. Any queries should be answered in full. Please note that authors are urged to check their proofs carefully before return, since the inclusion of late corrections cannot be guaranteed. 4. Proofs are to be returned to the Log-in Department, Elsevier Science, The Boulevard, Langford Lane, Kidlington, Oxford OX5 1GB, UK.
Offprints
1. Twenty-five offprints will be supplied free of charge. For review articles one hundred reprints will be supplied free of charge. 2. Offprints and copies of the issue can be ordered at a specially reduced rate using the order form sent to the corresponding author after the manuscript has been accepted. 3. Orders for reprints (orders received after publication) will incur a 50% surcharge.
Author Services Authors can also keep a track on the progress of their accepted article, and set up e-mail alerts informing them of changesto their manuscript's status, by using the 'Track a Paper' feature of Elsevier's Author Gateway.
