Instructions to Authors
Types of Manuscripts
Genes to Cells publishes papers describing significant research progress. The journal does not, in general, publish papers or results that are confirmatory, preliminary or incomplete. It does not accept papers that simply document well known processes in organisms or cell types not previously studied. Papers in the field of biotechnology, and those describing structures without direct implications for biological mechanisms, are only accepted for publication if they are considered by the Editors to be of exceptional merit. Submission of Manuscripts
One original and three copies of the manuscript should be submitted to the appropriate Editor or Associate Editor. Papers should not be submitted to the Editor-in-Chief. It is recommended that the author contact the Editor or Associate Editor in advance in order to ensure his or her availability. In addition, authors are asked to send a copy of their manuscript to the Editor-in-Chief at the time of submission. This will be used to track the status of the manuscript. Once accepted, papers become the copyright of the Journal.
A Copyright Assignment Form must be completed for all articles accepted for publication in the journal.
A File Description Form must be completed for all electronic submission of manuscripts.
Refereeing of Manuscripts
The Editor or Associate Editor will supervise the refereeing of the paper and the decide on acceptance, revision or rejection of the paper. The Editor-in-Chief and Editors will be consulted where necessary. On resubmission, authors are requested to respond point by point to the referees' comments. Presentation of Manuscripts
Manuscripts should be typed double-spaced throughout on A4 paper or 8" ¡Á 11" paper. The manuscript should be arranged as follows: (1) title page; (2) abstract page; (3) the main text, followed in order by acknowledgements, references, tables, table legends, figure legends, and figures. Where appropriate, original photographs should be provided with each copy of the manuscript. Title page
The title page should be in the conventional style, including up to five keywords and a running title of not more than 40 characters. Abstract page
The abstract of no more than 200 words should be divided into three sections: Background, Results and Conclusions. The abstract should be written so as to be intelligible to the non-specialist.
Main text
(1) Introduction: the introduction should summarize briefly the background and aims, and end with a very brief statement of what has been achieved by the work.
(2) Results. The results section should present the experiments that support the conclusions to be drawn later in the Discussion. The Results section should conform to a high standard of rigor. Extended lines of inference, arguments or speculations should not be placed in the Results.
(3) Discussion. The Discussion section should be separated from the Results section. This section allows authors to propose their interpretation of the results, and to suggest what they might mean in a wider context. It should end with a clear statement of the main conclusions of the research, and a clear explanation of their importance and relevance.
(4) Experimental procedures. Most of the experimental details should be placed in this section, leaving the results section for exposition of the experimental design and results.
(5) Acknowledgements. This should be brief.
(6) References. In the text, references should be cited by author and year. At the end of the paper, references should be listed alphabetically according to the first-named author. The full titles of papers and books or abbreviated journal names and the first and last page numbers should be given. Abstracts of work presented at meetings should not be cited.
Examples of reference style are given below:
Roth, D.B., Chengming, Z.M. & Gellert, M. (1993) Characterization of broken DNA molecules associated with V(D)J recombination. Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences USA 90, 10788-10792.
Tomizawa, J. (1993) Evolution of functional structures of RNA. In: The RNA World (eds R.F. Gesteland & J.F. Atkins), pp. 419-445. Cold Spring Harbor, New York: Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Press.
Summary figure Authors are encouraged to provide a summary figure that encapsulates the biological mechanism central to the paper. This single-column figure will be placed after the abstract. The figure presented by the authors will be redrawn by the publisher's artists and reproduced in one or two colours (black and light blue).
Tables and Figures Tables should have a brief title and be typed on separate sheets. For figures, good quality drawings or glossy prints of photographs should be supplied. Figures will be reduced to single column width (80 mm), two-thirds page width (110 mm) or full page width (169 mm). Lettering should be planned accordingly. Colour figures will be included where necessary. Summary figures in 2 colours are free, and Review articles may have the first two colour figures free.Figures should be numbered, excluding the summary figure. Figure legends should be typed on sheets separate to those containing the figures and be clear and consise, containing sufficient information to be understood without reference to the text, and should only contain minimal methodology. All symbols and abbreviations used in the figures should be explained. Authors of Review articles are allowed two colour figures free of charge.
It is the policy of Genes to Cells for authors to pay the full cost for the reproduction of their colour artwork. Therefore, please note that if there is colour artwork in your manuscript when it is accepted for publication, Blackwell Publishing require you to complete and return a colour work agreement form before your paper can be published. This form can be downloaded as a PDF* from the internet. The web address for the form is:

Disks When the manuscript is accepted, the authors should provide the Editor-in-Chief with a disk in addition to the final version of the manuscript. The final version of the hard copy and the file on disk must be the same. All disk formats are acceptable. Details should be given of the type of computer used, the software employed and the disk operating system. Text should not be justified. Particular attention should be taken to ensure that references conform to the Journal style. Figures should be saved using the normal 'save' procedure, and also as a postscript or EPS file. Reprints Twenty five reprints of each article will be supplied free of charge to the main author. Additional reprints may be purchased.
