Instructions to Authors

Submission Policy

Manuscripts will be considered for publication in the form of original articles, reviews and letters. Letters to the Editor are possible and encouraged by Dr. Camilleri and Dr. Schemann. 'Hot Topics' are also possible and encouraged by the Editors. Submission of a paper implies that it reports unpublished work, except in abstract forms, and is not being submitted simultaneously to another publication. Accepted manuscripts become the copyright of Neurogastroenterology and Motility and may not be published elsewhere without written consent from the publisher. On acceptance, a Copyright Assignment Form must be completed and returned to the publisher.

Neurogastroenterology and Motility does not make the payment of page charges an absolute condition for the acceptance of a manuscript for publication. Authors will be charged at $50 per printed black and white page, or $550 per page including colour illustrations. However, in exceptional cases, upon appeal by the author before publication of the article, the Editors may waive the assessment.

Manuscripts describing studies involving animals should comply with local/national guidelines governing the use of experimental animals and contain a statement indicating that the procedures have been approved by the appropriate regulatory body. Manuscripts concerned with human studies must contain statements indicating that informed, preferably written consent has been obtained, that studies have been performed according to the Declaration of Helsinki and that the procedures have been approved by a local ethics committee.

All articles are subject to review by experienced referees. The Editors and the Editorial Advisory Board judge manuscripts suitable for publication. All decisions made by the Editors are final.

Material accepted for publication is copy-edited and typeset. Proofs are then sent to contributors for a final check, but extensive changes to the proofs may be charged to the contributors.

Hot topics

Manuscripts to be submitted for the HOT TOPICS section are to be no more than 3 printed journal pages in length including only one figure and a maximum of six references; not to exceed 1500 words in total. They will be reviewed and accepted by the Editors on the basis of their outstanding scientific value and the presentation of novel insights into neural control on gut functions in health or disease. HOT TOPICS articles will be only accepted with very minor changes. Publication will be in the next available issue with the aim to publish the manuscript about 2 months after submission. The Editors reserve the right to reject the manuscript without formal review. Rejection for inclusion in the HOT TOPICS section does not disqualify for resubmission as an original article.

Instructions for Contributors

Please submit your manuscript online at http://ngm.manuscriptcentral.com. Full instructions and support are available on the site. A user ID and password can be obtained on the first visit. All parts of the manuscript must be available in an electronic format. Text files should be submitted as Microsoft Word or general rich text format (RTF) files and figures as GIF, JPEG, EPS, TIFF, PNG, Microsoft Excel or PowerPoint. Apple Macintosh users should add the correct filename suffix. Where possible it is recommended that all parts of the manuscript, except for figures, be combined into a single Microsoft Word document. Support can be obtained by phone (+1 434-817-2040 ext 167), e-mail (support@scholarone.com) or over the Web (http://blackwellsupport.custhelp.com).

If you cannot submit electronically, submit in paper form as outlined below, and mail 4 copies of the manuscript and glossy prints to: Dr. M. Camilleri, Mayo Clinic, Charlton 8, Rm. 110, 200 First Street SW, Rochester, MN 55905, USA.  If you have any queries, contact the Editorial Office:  tel.: + 1507 266 3422; e-mail: johnson.kathleenj@mayo.edu.

Form of Manuscript

The entire manuscript should be double-spaced with 1¡± margins all around.

Place the page number and first authors last name in the upper right-hand corner of each page. Number consecutively in this order: title page, abstract and key words, text, acknowledgements, references, tables and figure legends.

Title Page

On the title page provide the complete title and a brief title (for use as a running head). List each contributor's name and institution affiliation. Provide the name, postal and e-mail address and telephone number of the contributor responsible for the manuscript and proofs. This is the person to whom all correspondence and reprints will be sent. The corresponding author is responsible for keeping the Editorial office updated with any change in details until the paper is published.

Abstract and Key Words

The abstract must not exceed 200 words. It should summarize the problems presented and describe the studies undertaken, results and conclusions. In addition, you may list up to 6 key words in alphabetical order.

Text

The text of the manuscript should be in the following sequence: Introduction, Material and Methods, Results, Discussion, Acknowledgements, References, Tables and Figure legends. Type footnotes (double-spaced) at the bottom of the page in which they are mentioned. Cite all tables and figures in the text, numbering them sequentially as they are cited.

References

References must be numbered consecutively and cited in the text using arabic numerals within parentheses. The reference list should conform to the style used by the National Library of Medicine and Index Medicus. Spell out single-word journal titles and abbreviate all others as shown in the latest edition of the List of Journals Indexed in Index Medicus. Sample reference citations follow:

Journal

List all authors when six or fewer; when seven or more, list only the first three and add et al.

Caniano DA, Kanoti GA. Newborns with massive intestinal loss: difficult choices. N Engl Med 1988; 318: 70-87.

Books and Monographs - Personal Author(s)

Bateson M, Bouchier I. Clinical Investigation and Function, 2nd edn. Oxford: Blackwell Scientific Publications Ltd, 1981.

Unpublished material and personal communications should be referenced in the text only with the author's name and initials.

Abbreviations

Include in the manuscript a list of new or special abbreviations along with the spelled out form or definition. For commonly accepted abbreviations, word usage, symbols, etc., authors are referred to the CBE Style Manual published by the American Institute of Biological Sciences or Units, Symbols and Abbreviations published by the Royal Society of Medicine.

Tables

Tables should be numbered consecutively within the text. Tables and text should not duplicate each other. If possible, hold tables to one standard manuscript page; if the table continues past one page, repeat all column headings and the stub (left-hand column). Explain all abbreviations in a footnote. Provide a number and title for each table. Regardless of authorship or publisher, permission must be received in writing for its use if a table has been previously published. Include an acknowledgement of the original source in a footnote. Tables should not be submitted as photographs.

Figure Legends

Each figure must have a corresponding legend. Each legend must be numbered with an arabic number that corresponds to the illustration as it appears in the text. Explain all symbols, arrows, numbers, or letters used in the figure and provide information on scale and/or magnification. For photomicrographs, include information on the method of staining.

Figures

Figures submitted with an online submission should be of sufficient quality for on-screen viewing and desktop printing. Higher quality hard copy and electronic (TIFF or EPS) figures should be provided upon acceptance. Magnifications should be noted on print legends for any photomicrographs.  Authors may be asked to contribute to printing costs if the space requested for illustrations is considered too large or if colour photographs are requested.
