About the journal
|
 |
The Information Systems Journal (ISJ) aims to promote the study of, and interest in, information systems and to publish articles that reflect the wide and interdisciplinary nature of the subject. Articles are welcome on research, practice, experience, current issues and debates. The journal seeks to integrate technological disciplines with management and other areas such as psychology, philosophy, semiology and sociology. Papers reporting on research conducted using any appropriate research method are acceptable although ISJ has particularly built its reputation by publishing qualitative research. Articles from practitioners as well as academics are appropriate.

Instructions to Authors
Review information
The ISJ is double-blind refereed, that is reviewers do not know the identity of authors nor authors the identity of reviewers (Editors and Associate Editors are aware of the identities of authors). Each paper accepted into the review process is reviewed by a minimum of two reviewers, plus formal or informal reviews by Associate and other Editors. Papers may be rejected, prior to the review process, by the Editors for perceived scope and/or quality reasons. Reviewers are asked to complete reviews within one month and authors should receive feedback within three months, with a view to publication within six months following acceptance. Factors such as cycles of revision, publication backlogs, reviewer delays, and so on, may extend these target durations. Reviewers receive feedback (all reviews) after the paper has been processed, including names of authors, if the paper is accepted. No charges are made for submissions nor fees paid to reviewers.
Submission
Manuscripts in English in any area relevant to information systems should be submitted electronically to Carolyn Bailey at isj@brunel.ac.uk You will normally receive an acknowledgement within a few days. Please provide email addresses for all authors.
Papers are accepted in electronic format, with Microsoft Word being the preferred format (other formats are acceptable by prior arrangement). Files should not be security protected, and should be anonymized, e.g. in MS Word the properties, particularly author, should be blank. The editors reserve the right to make the style of presentation uniform prior to publication, whilst making every effort not to alter the content of an article. Paper submission will be acknowledged via email. Subsequent enquiries concerning paper progress should be made to Carolyn Bailey at isj@brunel.ac.uk
Preparation of the manuscript
Authors are urged to write as concisely as possible. Submissions should be line spaced at 1.5 with wide margins on one side of the page. A manuscript, which should not exceed 7000 words, should consist of the sections listed below.
Title page: This should include in the following order of presentation: title of paper, suggested running headline of not more than 45 characters including spaces, followed by the author's name, department, institution, city, country and number of words. A second copy of the title page should be provided without the author's details to facilitate 'blind' refereeing.
Main text: The text should begin on a new page, preceded by a short abstract, and a list of between four and six keywords should be provided for guidance. All pages should be numbered consecutively including the title page.
Author biographies: A biography for each author of about 100-200 words should be supplied as a separate file, including email addresses of all authors.
References
The Harvard System of referencing should be used in the text (Smith, 2003). All literature cited in the text should be arranged in alphabetical order at the end under the heading References. The following examples illustrate the style to be followed.
Article in journal Keil, M., Tiwana, A. & Bush, A. (2002) Reconciling user and project manager perceptions of IT project risk: a Delphi study. Information Systems Journal, 12, 103-120.
Book Avison, D. & Fitzgerald, G. (2002) Information Systems Development: Methodologies, Techniques and Tools, 3rd edn. McGraw-Hill, Maidenhead.
Chapter in book Willcocks, L. & Fitzgerald, G. (1996) IT outsourcing and the changing shape of information systems function. In: Information Management: The Organisational Dimension, Earl, M.J. (ed.), pp. 270-294. Oxford University Press, Oxford.
Illustrations and tables
Tables and figures should use the Arial font (or Helvetica if you don't have Arial). They should be referred to in the text as Figures using Arabic numerals, e.g. Figure 1, Figure 2, Table 1, Table 2, etc. in order of appearance.
Electronic artwork
We would very much like to receive your artwork in electronic form. Please save vector graphics (e.g. line artwork) in Encapsulated Postscript (EPS) format and bitmap files (e.g. half-tones) in Tagged Image File Format (TIFF). Detailed information on our digital illustration standards is available at http://www.blackwell-science.com/elecmed/authors.htm. Always enclose a hard copy of digitally supplied figures.
On acceptance
If accepted, the final typescript should be submitted electronically, together with a hard copy, to Carolyn Bailey. Include all parts of the text of the paper in a single file. Include all figure legends, and tables with their legends if available. The final version of the hard copy and the file on disk must be the same. It is the author's responsibility to ensure that they are identical. If different, the electronic copy will be used. A checklist for authors is available at http://www.blackwellpublishing.com/authors/checklist.asp
Author material archive policy
Please note that unless specifically requested, Blackwell Publishing will dispose of all hard-copy or electronic material submitted 2 months after publication. If you require the return of any material submitted, please inform the editorial office or production editor as soon as possible if you have not yet done so.
Proofs The corresponding author will receive an email alert containing a link to a web site. A working email address must therefore be provided for the corresponding author. The proof can be dowloaded as a PDF (portable document format) file from this site. Acrobat Reader will be required in order to read this file. This software can be downloaded free of charge from the following web site:
http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
This will enable the file to be opened, read on screen and printed out in order for any corrections to be added. Further instructions will be sent with the proof. Hard copy proofs will be posted if no email address is available. Excessive changes made by the author, excluding typesetting errors, will be charged seperately.
Offprints
Authors will be provided with electronic offprints of their paper. Paper offprints may be ordered at prices quoted on the order form, which accompanies proofs, provided that the form is returned with the proofs. The cost is more if the order form arrives too late for the main print run. Offprints are normally despatched within three weeks of publication of the issue in which the paper appears. Please contact the publishers if the offprints do not arrive; however, please note that offprints are sent by surface mail, so overseas orders may take up to six weeks to arrive. Electronic offprints are sent to the first author at his or her first email address on the title page of the paper, unless advised otherwise; therefore, please ensure that the name, address and email of the receiving author are clearly indicated on the manuscript title page if he or she is not the first author of the paper.
Exclusive Licence Form
It is a condition of publication that authors grant the Publisher the exclusive licence to publish all articles including abstracts. Papers will not be passed to the publisher for production unless the exclusive licence to publish has been granted. To assist authors an exclusive licence form is available from the editorial office or by clicking here: click here.
Authors are themselves responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyright material from other sources.
