About the journal

This Journal publishes original contributions related to breeding. Three types of manuscript may be accepted, Research papers, Research communications and Notes. Since the objective of Research communications is to bring new findings quickly to the attention of the research community, these may be published somewhat more rapidly than Research papers. Notes are covering new breeding materials or techniques. If Research paper is longer than 6 printed pages, the author will be charged for excess pages. For Research communication, full page charges should be paid. If Note is longer than 4 printed pages, the author will be charged for excess pages. Page charge is 9,000 yen per page. Four sheets with double-space (26 lines) correspond to one printed page. At least one author must be a member (except group and supporting member) of the Japanese Society of Breeding. All the manuscripts should be written in English.

Instructions to Authors

I. General Instructions

1. Please check the most recent issues of Breeding Science for current format and style.

2. All sections of the manuscript should be typed double-spaced on one side only of A4 (21_29.5 cm) paper with margins of at least 3 cm all round. A word at the end of a line should not be divided.

3. Manuscripts should be arranged in the following order: Title Page, Summary, Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, Acknowledgment(s), Literature Cited, Figure Legends, Tables and Figures. All pages must be consecutively numbered except for figures.

4. Standard international units (SIU) should be used. Latin names are written in italics. The name of the author of a scientific name and words such as var. are written in Roman characters. The first time an abbreviation is used it is in parenthesis after the non-abbreviated name.

II. Title Page (page 1)

At the top, write each author's last name and a running title (about 10 words). Next write title (begin each word with capital letters except for prepositions, articles and conjunctions. Do not divide into a main title and a subtitle), author(s) full name, name and address of the institution where the work was performed and postal number. Superscript number after an author's name should be used to indicate a different address. Numbers of figures and tables should be indicated on the title page. The title page should include telephone and fax numbers and E-mail address of the corresponding author. Name of more than two Review Editors requested by authors should be written in the title page, too.

III. Summary Page (page 2)

Summary is a single concise paragraph (less than 350 words). The author should describe the objective of the study, materials, methods and results in the summary without using references. Summary should include key words characterizing the scope of the paper. Up to seven Key Words should be provided following the summary.

IV. Text (page 3, etc.)

Main headings (Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion and Acknowledgment(s)) are not numbered but written in Gothic characters (begin with capital letters). Second-level headings should be written in italic characters (capitalize first letter of first word). All figures and tables must be mentioned in the text. The author should cite references by author last name and year of publication. When there are two authors, write the last name of each author, but when there are more than two, write ?/SPAN>et al.?/SPAN> after the first author's last name.

V. Literature Cited

References are limited to those cited and should contain complete titles and inclusive page numbers. References should be listed alphabetically, by the author(s)' last name, according to the following rules and examples. When there are more than two references by the same author, they should be listed by the year. ?/SPAN>In press?/SPAN> citations must be accepted for publication and the name of the journal or publisher must be included in Literature Cited. It is the authors' responsibility to obtain permission from colleagues to include their work as a personal communication.

Khalafalla,M.M. and K.Hattori (2000) Differential in vitro direct shoot regeneration responses in embryo axis and shoot tip explants of faba bean. Breed. Sci. 50:117-122.

Kurata,N. and T.Sasaki (1997) Molecular analysis of the rice genome. In "DNA Markers: Protocols, Applications, and Overview" Caetano-Anolles,G. and P.M.Gresshoff (eds.), Wiley-Liss, New York. p.271-282.

Bos,I. and P.Caligari (1995) Selection methods in plant breeding. Chapman & Hall, London. 347p.

VI. Figure Legends

Figure legends should be numbered consecutively with Arabic numerals and typed continuously. Each should begin with a short title for the figure. All symbols and abbreviations used in the figures should be explained.

VII. Tables

Each table must start on a separate sheet. Tables should be numbered with Arabic numerals. The first words of the title and each entry in each column should be capitalized. Vertical lines should not be used. When the author wishes to make a comment as a footnote, he/she should use a superscript number in parentheses where the comment as directed. The symbols * and # should not be used.

VIII. Figures

Figures are black and white half-tones (photographs), drawings or graphs. Authors should consult the Editorial Office about color figures. Figures with marks, letters etc. should be drawn on appropriate size so that they can be printed in the Journal on a scale of 1:2. Authors should prepare figures using professional standards. Failure to provide good-quality copies of figures may be grounds for returning a manuscript without review. The title and footnotes should not be written on the original figures but on a copy of the figure. Write the number, the title and author(s) name in the corner of the figure.  Figures should be received flat.

IX. Notes

Notes do not include summary. Key Words should be written on the Title page. Text should be written without starting items such as Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, etc. The rest of the Note should be written according to the above-mentioned instructions.

X. Submission of Manuscripts

Three clear copies and original manuscript with figures should be submitted to

Editorial Office of the Breeding Science,

c/o Dr. Masahiro Yano

National Institute of Agrobiological Sciences,

2-1-2 Kannondai, Tsukuba, Ibaraki 305-8602, Japan

XI. Disk Submission of Manuscripts

Breeding Science requests authors to submit the revised version of an accepted manuscript on 3.5 inches floppy disk prepared with any one of following word processing programs; MSWord, Ichitaro, Word Perfect and LaTex. Text file is also acceptable. The disk must contain all final revisions and must be accompanied by a hard copy printout. Tabular material should be included on the disk as a Text file or an Excel file.

XII. Review Procedure and Publication

A manuscript submitted to the Editorial Office will be sent to the Review Editor requested by authors after checking the style. All manuscripts will be reviewed by at least two referees with expertise in the research area. The Review Editor determines acceptance of a manuscript on the basis of reviewers' comments. Final acceptance of a manuscript is contingent upon strict compliance with Journal format and style. As a rule, the order of publication corresponds to the date of receipt. Manuscripts will not be returned except for the photographs and figures upon the author's request.

XIII. Reprints

100 copies will be supplied for free of charge. Additional reprints will be available at cost. Charge will be informed at proof reading stage.

XIV. Copyright

The copyright on any published materials in Breeding Science is owned by the Japanese Society of Breeding. Anyone who intends to use these materials must obtain the authorization from the Japanese Society of Breeding.
