Editorial policies
Editorial board members, as well as a large group of external reviewers who have broad expertise in research areas of environmental health and preventive medicine, will fairly and thoroughly evaluate manuscripts submitted to EHPM.
Authors must indicate whether or not they have a financial relationship with the organization that sponsored the research. This note should be added in a separate section before the reference list as follows;
Conflict of interest
A (author name) serves as a consultant to Z (entity name); B's spouse is chairman of Y; C received a research grant from X; D received lecture fees from V; E holds a patent on U; F has been reimbursed by T for attending several conferences; G received honoraria for writing promotional material for S.
If no conflict exists, authors should state: The authors declare that they have no conflict of interest.
- Protection of human subjects and animals in research
When reporting studies on human subjects, authors must indicate whether the research was in accordance with the ethical standards of the committee responsible for human experimentation (institutional and national) and with the Helsinki Declaration. It should be stated in the text that the participants' informed consent was obtained on the basis of a procedure that is officially approved by the authors' institutions or governmental regulations or guidelines. When reporting experiments on animals, authors must indicate that the institutional and national guidelines for the care and use of laboratory animals were observed.
Editors and reviewers are expected to maintain a strict ethical code regarding the confidentiality of the material under review. After the review, authors will be promptly informed of editorial decisions. Only written inquiries regarding the status of manuscripts will be answered. The copyright of articles accepted by this journal will be transferred from authors to the Japanese Society for Hygiene.
Permissions
Authors wishing to include figures, tables, or text passages that have already been published elsewhere are required to obtain permission from the copyright owner(s) and to include evidence that such permission has been granted when submitting their papers. Any material received without such evidence will be assumed to originate from the authors.
How to submit
Authors should submit their manuscripts online. Electronic submission substantially reduces the editorial processing and reviewing time and shortens overall publication time. Please go directly to the site https://www.editorialmanager.com/ehpm and upload all your manuscript files following the instructions given on the screen. Please use the Help option to see the most recently updated system requirements.
Authors entering the journal's Editorial Manager site can either create a new account or use an existing one. When you have an existing account, use it for all your submissions; you can track their status on the same page.
If you have forgotten your username and password, please click the link "Send Username/Password" and enter your e-mail address. You will then receive an automatically generated e-mail with your username and password. Alternatively, please create a new account and then follow the instructions given on the screen.
Once you have logged into your account, Editorial Manager will lead you through the submission process in an orderly, step-by-step process. If you cannot finish your submission in one visit, you can save a draft and re-enter the process later at the same point for that manuscript.
While submitting your electronic manuscript, you will be required to enter data about your manuscript. These include full title, author names and affiliations, and other information, as listed below under Manuscript preparation. Support for special characters is available.
Main Documents: Main documents of articles should be uploaded in rich text format (.rtf) or as Microsoft Word documents (.doc).
Tables: Use the table functions of your word-processing program, not spreadsheets, to create tables. Tables may be uploaded separately from the main document or inserted into the main document.
Figures: Common graphic files such as GIF, JPEG, EPS, and TIFF are supported. Please upload figures that are satisfactory for the review process and for printing according to artwork guidelines described in the end of this instruction.
After the components of the article have been uploaded in this manner, the system will convert the files to PDF format. You can view the result of the conversion with Adobe Acrobat Reader. You will also be notified by e-mail that your submission was successful.
At any point during this process, there are Help buttons available to see frequently asked questions.
If the total size of the files exceeds the file volume (10 MB) for online submission, reduce the resolution of large files for initial submission.
After submission, you may return and monitor the progress of your submission through the review process.
Manuscript preparation
The manuscript should be submitted with a cover letter stating the following. (1) That the manuscript is submitted for consideration for publication in EHPM. Please specify the category of the submitted manuscript. (2) That the research contained in the manuscript has not been published, and the manuscript is not under consideration elsewhere. (3) That all authors have participated in the concept and design, analysis and interpretation of data, drafting or revising of the manuscript, and that they have approved the manuscript as submitted.
Manuscripts should be organized in the following order, starting each section on a new page: (a) title page, (b) abstract, (c) text (introduction, materials and methods, results, and discussion), (d) acknowledgments, (e) references, (f) footnotes, (g) tables, (h) figures, and (i) figure legends. Manuscripts should be typed on ISO A4 size with double spacing throughout, including table and figure legends, with 25-mm margins. Consecutive numbering of all pages is required, with the title page as page 1. Numbering of lines in the margin is requested to facilitate review (consult the “Help” menu for “Insert Line Number” on word-processing programs).
Manuscripts should be written in clear and grammatically correct English. When written by authors whose first language is not English, the manuscript should be checked by an editing service company employing native-English-speaking scientists. Terminology and abbreviations not consistent with internationally accepted guidelines should be avoided. Abbreviations for scientific units must conform to the SI units. Manuscripts that are not in the style of EHPM or not in good, standard English will be returned to the author without being reviewed.
Title: The title should be informative and brief.
Names and Affiliations of Authors: Full names of all authors (first, middle initial, and surname) and affiliations (names of institutions and subsidiary laboratories or departments, city, country) should be provided. The name and complete address, including postal code, telephone and fax numbers, and an e-mail address, of the corresponding author should be provided.
Key Words: Five key words identifying the nature of the subject matter should be listed.
The abstract should be no more than 250 words and should indicate the content of the manuscript. In both Regular Articles and Short Communications, a structured abstract should be written under four headings: objectives, methods, results, and conclusions. Abbreviations should be kept to an absolute minimum; however, if they are needed, they should be defined at first use in both the abstract and text so that the abstract can be viewed independent of the text.
Regular Articles and Short Communications consist of an introduction, materials and methods, results, and discussion. In Short Communications, the results and discussion sections may be combined. Introduction: State why the investigation was carried out, note any relevant published work and delineate the objective of the investigation. The significance of the work and its contribution to the area of study should be stated. Materials and Methods: The methods should be briefly but clearly explained. Procedures published previously need only be cited as references. New and significant modifications need complete exposition. Describe statistical methods with sufficient detail to enable a knowledgeable reader with access to the original data to verify the reported results. Authors must describe the protection of human subjects and animals in research. Results: The results of the study should be concisely summarized. Textual description of the data must be presented in tables and figures, and duplication of the text of this section and materials presented in tables and figures should be avoided. Discussion: The discussion section should emphasize the major findings of the study and its significance to existing knowledge. Information presented in the previous section should not be repeated. Concise interpretation of the data with well-founded speculation should be included.
Text formatting: For submission in Word, Springer provides a Word template
・Use a normal, plain font (12-point Times New Roman) for text.
・Use italics for emphasis.
・Use the automatic page-numbering function to number the pages.
・Do not use field functions.
・Use tab stops or other commands for indents, not the
space bar.
・Use the table function, not spreadsheets, to make tables.
・Use the equation editor or MathType for equations.
Heading levels: Please use no more than three levels of displayed headings.
Abbreviations and acronyms: Abbreviations should be defined at first mention and used consistently thereafter.
Terminology: Generic names of drugs and pesticides are preferred; if trade names are used, the generic name should be given at first mention.
Equations: Please use the standard mathematical notation for formulae, symbols, etc.:
・Italic for single letters that denote mathematical constants, variables, and unknown quantities.
・Roman/upright for numerals, operators, and punctuation, and commonly defined functions or abbreviations, e.g., cos, det, e or exp, lim, log, max, min, sin, tan, d (for derivative)
・Bold for vectors, tensors, and matrices
Authors are responsible for recognizing and disclosing financial and other conflicts of interest that might bias their work. They should acknowledge in the manuscript all financial support for the work and other financial or personal connections to the work.
Authors must indicate whether or not they have a financial relationship with the organization that sponsored the research. See the Editorial policies section for more information.
The list of References should include only works that are cited in the text and that have been published or accepted for publication. Personal communications and unpublished works should not be referred. Do not use footnotes or endnotes as a substitute for a reference list. If you have or editorial office suggests supplemental figure or table, they will be appear on the ONLINE publication. Thus, do not use "Data not shown" in the text. List all authors when six or fewer; for seven or more authors, list the first six followed by et al.
Citation in text
Citations in the text should be identified by numbers in square brackets. Some examples:
・Negotiation research spans many disciplines [3].
・This result was later contradicted by Becker and Seligman [5].
・This effect has been widely studied [1-3, 7].
Style for reference listings
Reference list entries should be numbered consecutively.

(http://www.springer.com/ehpm) to the specific instructions for electronic supplementary material on the right.
After acceptance
During the production phase the following issues must be clarified:
The purpose of the proof is to check for typesetting errors and the completeness and accuracy of the text, tables, and figures. Substantial changes in content, e.g., new results, corrected values, title, and authorship, are not allowed without the approval of the Editor. After online publication, further changes can be made only in the form of an Erratum, which will be hyperlinked to the article.
Authors will be asked to transfer copyright of the article to the Japanese Society for Hygiene. This will ensure the widest possible protection and dissemination of information under copyright laws. Open Choice articles do not require transfer of copyright as the copyright remains with the author. In opting for open access, authors agree to the Springer Open Choice License.
In addition to the usual publication process (whereby an article is submitted to the journal and access to that article is granted to customers who have purchased a subscription), Springer now provides an alternative publishing option: Springer Open Choice. A Springer Open Choice article receives all the benefits of a regular subscription-based article, but in addition is made available publicly through Springer's online platform SpringerLink. We regret that Springer Open Choice cannot be ordered for already published articles.
Offprints can be ordered by the corresponding author.
(1) Authors of accepted manuscripts will be charged 4000 yen per page, if the first author or the corresponding author resides in Japan.
(2) Exception: Authors may request to be exempt from page charges when neither the first author nor the corresponding author has research funds available. The decision to grant such exemption will be made by the Editorial Board.
Online publication of color illustrations is free of charge. For color in the print version, authors will be expected to make a contribution toward the extra costs, otherwise the figures will be printed in black and white. Please note that, in such cases, it is authors’ responsibility to prepare figures to be illustrative enough to convey the necessary information even after they are converted into black and white.
An article will be published online after receipt of the corrected proofs. This is the official first publication citable with the DOI. After release of the printed version, the article can also be cited by issue and page numbers.
Advertisements should be received 5 weeks prior to the date of publication. Issues are published bimonthly. Inquiries regarding advertising should be directed to:
