About the journal

Turkish Chamber of Civil Engineers (IMO) is the widest technical organisation, having over 72,000 members, 26 branches and 129 representation offices throughout Turkey as of 2008. IMO was founded in 1954 by law, under the umbrella Union of Chamber of Turkish Engineers and Architects (TMMOB), which is a unique and the largest technical union of professional organizations in the country. TMMOB is composed of 23 chambers and in total the number of members is around 280 thousand.
Since 19 December 1954, the week of foundation has traditionally accepted as National Civil Engineering Week in the country. By investigations (surveys, etc.) and other sorts of activities, IMO has sought to provide the best evaluation of national resources in the benefit of the country. It has supported and contributed to the formation of necessary public arrangements in the idea of a more civilized society; it has opposed and debated attempts that are against the national will and has always observed the fulfillment of the responsibility of engineering in a sustainable and consistent manner.
In Turkey, every civil engineer in possession of a valid university diploma from a civil engineering department has to become a member of IMO in order to work for private sector as an engineer. Being a member of IMO is voluntary for public sector engineers. Within this framework, IMO has around 72,000 members out of the current total of around 85,000 Turkish civil engineers. This provides consistency in civil engineering within Turkey and forms a strong organization of professional standards. One of the principles of IMO is to protect and maintain the rights of civil engineers where need be.
IMO actively participates in planning and preparation of laws, legal arrangements, and rules and regulations about civil engineering and its applications. While doing this, IMO always prefers to be in close contact with both public and academic stakeholders to achieve common, admissible and practical results. It proposes upgrading the legality of applications in civil engineering in favour of the public and the country.
IMO controls the validity of civil engineering projects and the application of legal treatments in order to protect labour rights and workers’ health and safety regulations, and at the same time, maintains production of appropriate materials with specific standards and provides the quality management of material application in Turkey; carries out studies on city planning features and problems of the country concerning social and economic structures of regions and improvement of structural typologies. All of these issues are discussed and evaluated in several activities held all around the country with the active participation of IMO members. This provides a wide perspective approach to the daily issues and helps to provide necessary solutions to all parties.
IMO follows developments and achievements in the field of civil engineering through participation in several international congresses and conferences as much as possible. Following the global publications, it consequently shares the professional advances with the public and particularly with Turkish civil engineers.
