Instructions to Authors
I. General Information

The Archives of Neuropsychiatry is the official publication of the Turkish Association of Neuropsychiatry. It is published quarterly and four editions annually constitute a volume. The Archives of Neuropsychiatry is a peer reviewed scientific journal in which clinical and basic science manuscripts in the fields of psychiatry, neurology, neurosurgery, clinical psychology and behavioral sciences are published.

The language of the journal is both Turkish and English. Manuscripts submitted to the journal should not have been previously published, accepted for publication or be in the process of evaluation for publication in any other journal published in Turkish and English. This requirement does not apply to manuscripts presented as bulletins in scientific meetings and whose summaries are published. In such cases however, the name, date and place of the meeting, in which the paper was presented, should be stated.

The format of the manuscripts should be in accordance with the rules of “Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals: Writing and Editing for Biomedical Publications” (http://www.icmje.org).

The authors are asked to declare any financial relations concerning the study. All authors should state that they scientifically contributed to and took responsibility in the study and declare that there is no conflict of interest. The authors should acknowledge and provide information on grants, contracts or other financial support of the study provided by any foundations and institutions or firms.

No fee or compensation will be paid for manuscripts published in the journal. Editorial board assumes that the author(s) are obliged not to submit the manuscript to another journal before the completion of the evaluation process.

In the “method” section of the manuscript concerned with experimental research on humans or animals, a sentence showing that the informed consent of the patients or volunteers has been obtained following a detailed explanation of the interventions carried out on them. In such studies, author(s) should clearly state the compliance with international guidelines such as “Declaration of Helsinki” and “The Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals”. Declaration of Helsinki can be found at www.wma.net/e/policy/pdf/17c.pdf. In experimental animal studies, ethical considerations within “The Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals” (www.nap.edu/catalog/5140.html) should be followed. Moreover, the author(s) must comply with “Regulation on Medical Research” issued by the Republic of Turkey Ministry of Health and published in the Official Journal dated 29 January 1993 and numbered 21480; and more recently published rules laid out in government ethics rules. They should forward a copy of the Ethics Committee Approval received from the relevant institution.

Standard abbreviations used in the text are written in full when first mentioned. For example, when first cited in the manuscript, the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS) should be written, thereafter given as HDRS. In the use of drugs’ names in the manuscript, generic names should be written. Measurement units are given according to the metric system; e.g. written as mg, no punctuation is used, in the case of extensions (‘) is used as a separator. Laboratory measurements are reported in International System units (US; Systéme International: SI).

II. Editorial and Peer Review
All submitted manuscripts are reviewed initially by the Editors-in-Chief and Associate Editors. Manuscripts are evaluated according to the following criteria: material is original and timely, writing is clear, study methods are appropriate, data are valid, conclusions are reasonable and supported by the data, information is important, and the topic has general interest for the scope of the journal. From these basic criteria, the editors decide whether a manuscript reaches a priority score to justify peer review. Manuscripts with insufficient priority for publication are rejected promptly. Manuscripts which have not been straightly rejected are sent to expert consultants for peer review. Although rare, it is possible for an exceptional manuscript to be accepted upon submission.

Manuscripts considered to be of interest by the editors will be peer reviewed by internationally recognized experts on the subject. Each manuscript is sent to 3–5 reviewers. When necessary, a biostatistician will also review manuscripts. A copy of the study protocol may be requested during the review process.

Reviewers are matched to the paper according to their expertise. Our reviewer database is constantly being updated to ensure the reviewer profile matches that of the topic being discussed in the manuscript. We welcome suggestions for reviewers from the author though these recommendations may or may not be considered.

III. Types and Characteristics of the Manuscripts to be submitted to the Journal
The Archives of Neuropsychiatry publishes manuscripts prepared in accordance with the fifth edition of the Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals established by the Vancouver Group (International Committee of Medical Journal Editors, ICMJE), originally published in New England Journal of Medicine 1997;336:309-15.

The manuscripts should be typed in Arial or Times New Roman font and double spaced with a 2 cm margin on all sides. Each section should start on a separate page and should be prepared in the following order: 1) title page, 2) abstract, 3) text, 4) references, 5) tables and/or figures.

The first author serves as the primary contact for all correspondence regarding the manuscripts, unless otherwise stated. The category of the manuscript should be specified (i.e. research manuscript, brief report, case report) and the Copyright Transfer Form signed by all authors should be attached to the manuscript. All properly submitted manuscripts will receive an acknowledgment of receipt and a manuscript number. In addition, a paragraph, which should be written as follows “This manuscript whose compliance with Archives of Neuropsychiatry rules of writing has been checked, was read and approved by all the authors. All publication rights were transferred to the Archives of Neuropsychiatry”, must be included and signed by all of the authors.

B. Abstract and Keywords:
This is written in two languages, Turkish and English and also includes the title of the manuscript. The abstract includes subtitles of objective, method, results and discussion and consists of 300 words. At the end of the abstract, at least 3, at most 5 keywords in both languages are included. Keywords must be written in appropriate quality and standard terminology. Turkish keywords should be chosen from among “Turkey Science Terms”. In the introduction, following a brief statement of basic information and justifications which constitute the basis of the manuscript, the objective is clearly given in the last paragraph. If necessary, the method section may be organized according to the subtitles such as research/patient/test group, instruments, application and statistical analysis. This section should be written with clarity so that a person not involved in the study may easily understand. The results section summarizes the findings of the study and, when necessary, basic findings are supported with tables and figures. In the discussion section, the findings are discussed in the light of relevant national and international studies. This section includes the discussion of original findings, not a general review.
