About the journal
Plant Biosystems is the research journal edited by the Societ?Botanica Italiana. It is a quarterly journal, open to papers dealing with all aspects of plant biology, systematics, and ecology. Research studies containing novel and significant findings, from the molecular level to ecosystems and from micro-organisms to flowering plants, are welcome. Plant Biosystems succeeded "Giornale Botanico Italiano", the historical journal of the Societa' Botanica Italiana, from the year 1997. Plant Biosystems has been conceived in consideration of the recent progress in botanical research. An editorial board divided into 9 main sections has been devised to ensure that all the main trends of contemporary plant science are represented. Manuscripts are classified as Full Paper, Rapid Report or Short Communication. A Rapid Report is intended for publication, in a concise form, of new and relevant findings. The classification as Rapid Report is determined by the Editor. A Short Communication (no more than two printed pages) is for a concise but independent report. It is not intended for publication of preliminary results. Review articles are also published, but only upon invitation by the Editor. An international panel of highly qualified referees warrants the highest scientific standard.
Instructions to Authors
Manuscripts are considered for publication only if they are in accord with the following instructions. The latest issues of the journal should be used as a guide to the formal layout.
1. Plant Biosystems is an international journal which publishes original papers pertaining to all aspects of plant biology. Manuscripts that contain new and significant findings are welcome with the understanding that the contents have not been published in or submitted to any other journal. Manuscripts are classified as Full Paper, Rapid Report and Short Communication. A manuscript can be published as a Rapid Report if it presents novel and relevant findings in a concise form. The Editor will determine whether or not a submission can be classified as Rapid Report. A Short Communication (no more than two printed pages) is for a concise but independent report. It is not intended for the publication of preliminary results. In addition, Review Articles will be published, but only upon invitation by the Editor.
2. Manuscripts are examined by two independent referees before any decision is taken regarding acceptance and changes required. Papers should be clearly and concisely written in correct English; this is the responsability of the authors. If the manuscript has not been reviewed by a native-English speaker, it will be sent for language review by the Editor. If the language is exceedingly poor, however, the authors may be asked to have it corrected by a linguist prior to re-submission of the revised version.
3. Manuscripts should be typewritten, double- spaced throughout, on one side only of A4 paper with margins of at least 3 cm all around.
4. The original manuscript and three copies should be sent to: The Editor, Plant Biosystems. Biology Department, University of Bologna. Via Irnerio 42. I-40126 Bologna.
5. Manuscripts should be arranged in the following order: a) Cover page, containing the Running title, not exceeding 40 characters including letters and spaces, the name and address of the corresponding author, including telephone and fax numbers and E-mail address. b) Title page, containing the title of the article, the full name of the author(s), the abstract (no more than 200 words for a Full Paper, less than 50 words for a Rapid Report or Short Communication), the key words (up to six, in alphabetical order), the list of abbreviations used (if applicable). c)Text. d) Acknowledgements. e) References in alphabetical order. f) Tables. g) Legends to figures. h) Figures. i) Complete addresses of the author(s).
6. The text should be subdivided into the following sections : Introduction (without heading), Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion. The approximate desired position of all figures and tables should be indicated in the margins of the text.
7. The names of the authors should be written in SMALL CAPITALS. All taxonomic names subjected to the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature should be written in italics. Latin names of plant communities should also be written in italics. The International System of Units (SI System) should be used throughout. Herbaria should be quoted using the abbreviations published in the Index Herbariorum.
8. Details should be given on the origin and the identification of every organism quoted. Scientific names should conform to the international rules of nomenclature. Authors of the genera, species and infraspecific taxa must be either cited when first mentioned in the text or all included in a single list. The location of voucher specimens should be indicated.
9. When quoting references in the text, the author's name and year of publication should be given [ e.g. ROSSI (1997) or (ROSSI, 1997)]. Different papers by the same author(s) published in the same year should be distinguished in the text and in the list of references by a letter (a, b,... ) after the year of publication. The symbol & is to be used between the names of two co-authors. In the text, "et al." should be used in the case of more than two authors. Authors of unpublished data and personal communications should not be cited in the reference list, but only in the text and in brackets. Articles that have been accepted for publication can be cited as being "in press" in the list of references .
10. References should be listed according to the following examples: GAHAN, P.B., 1984 - Plant Histochemistry and Cytochemistry. Academic Press, London. LINN?K. af, 1753 - Caroli Linnaei... Species Plantarum, exhibentes plantas rite cognitas... 1: 536-537. impensis Laurentii Salvii, Holmiae. TERRACCIANO N., 1891 - Synopsis plantarum vascularum Montis Pollini. Annuario Reale Ist. Bot. Authors and titles of papers published in languages which use alphabets other than Latin should be transliterated using standards such as ISO-1 or ISO-2 (see Taxon 30: 168-183).

Authors should not place letters or symbols on the original photographs. Each photograph should be accompanied by a xerographic copy with the necessary letters and symbols correctly positioned.
