About the journal

The international mathematics education community is maturing at a rapid and exciting rate. Although this community has developed its own research perspectives and theoretical frameworks, it continues to expand its horizons by drawing upon new theories and research in mathematics, psychology, sociology, philosophy, anthropology, and information technology. Mathematical Thinking and Learning is directed at researchers interested in mathematics education from any of these perspectives, with a particular focus on mathematical thinking, reasoning, and learning.
This journal seeks high-quality articles that address one or more of the following topics:
- interdisciplinary studies on mathematical learning, reasoning or thinking, and their developments at all ages;
- technological advances and their impact on mathematical thinking and learning;
- studies that explore the diverse processes of mathematical reasoning;
- new insights into how mathematical understandings develop across the life span, including significant transitional periods;
- changing perspectives on the nature of mathematics and their impact on mathematical thinking and learning in both formal and informal contexts;
- studies that explore the internationalization of mathematics education, together with other cross-cultural studies of mathematical thinking and learning; and
- studies of innovative instructional practices that foster mathematical learning, thinking, and development.
In addition to receiving research articles, the journal invites articles that present theoretical and philosophical analyses of issues related to the previous topics.

Instructions to Authors
Mathematical Thinking and Learning , a fully refereed journal, is directed at researchers interested in mathematics education from the perspective of psychology, sociology, philosophy, anthropology, mathematics and information technology, with a particular focus on mathematical thinking, reasoning and learning.
The journal seeks original, high-quality articles that address one or more of the following topics: interdisciplinary studies on mathematical learning, reasoning and thinking, and their developments at all ages; technological advances and their impact on mathematical thinking and learning; studies that explore the diverse processes of mathematical reasoning; new insights into how mathematical understandings develop across the life span, including significant transitional periods; changing perspectives on the nature of mathematics and their impact on mathematical thinking and learning in both formal and informal contexts; studies that explore the internationalization of mathematics education, together with other cross-cultural studies of mathematical thinking and learning; and studies of innovative instructional practices that foster mathematical learning, thinking and development. Mathematical Thinking and Learning would prefer to receive manuscripts that are no longer than 40 pages (excluding cover page, letter, abstract, references, tables, and figures). Longer manuscripts will be reviewed at the discretion of the editor.
In addition to receiving research articles, the journal invites articles that present theoretical and philosophical analyses of issues related to the previous topics. MTL also publishes Short Reports as one means of reporting on larger, more comprehensive studies that might be documented elsewhere in non-journal format (e.g., doctoral dissertations). Short Reports might also address introductory or pilot studies, with proposals included for futher research. Theoretical pieces that address significant and timely issues on mathematical thinking and learning could likewise form a Short Report. Such reports typically comprise 6–14 manuscript pages. The editors would also consider publishing an occasional discourse section comprising timely dialogue among researchers on significant issues pertaining to mathematical thinking and learning. Letters to the Editor and more extensive Critical Commentaries on published articles are welcomed. These should comprise critical, timely, and responsible comment on issues of significance to mathematical thinking and learning. Suggestions for such topics are welcomed and should be sent to the Editor, Lyn D. English ( L.English@qut.edu.au ).
Readers are also encouraged to recommend books and other scholarly publications for review. Recommendations should be sent to the Review Editor, Michael N. Fried, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Israel (E-mail: mfried@bgu.ac.il ).
Please note that Mathematical Thinking and Learning uses CrossCheck™ software to screen papers for unoriginal material. By submitting your paper to Mathematical Thinking and Learning you are agreeing to any necessary originality checks your paper may have to undergo during the peer review and production processes.
Manuscript Preparation: Mathematical Thinking and Learning is now using an online submission and review system, Editorial Manager, through which authors submit manuscripts and track their progress until acceptance for publication. Authors will enter pertinent information into the system and submit the following files: (a) cover letter file, containing (i) any comments to the editor as well as a statement indicating that the manuscript is not previously published or simultaneously submitted elsewhere (manuscripts copyrighted electronically or online will also not be considered) and (ii) confirmation that all original research procedures were consistent with the principles of the research ethics published by the American Psychological Association, except as may be detailed in the manuscript; (b) manuscript file, containing the entire text of the article, including abstract, all text, references, footnotes and appendices; (c) figures and tables, which may be submitted as separate files if desired.
Please log onto http://www.editorialmanager.com/mtl for information and instructions regarding registration and manuscript submission. Manuscripts should be prepared according to the guidelines of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (current ed.). Double-space all material and place in the following order: title page, abstract, text, quotations, acknowledgments, references, appendices, footnotes, tables and figures. To facilitate blind review, authors’ names and affiliations should not appear on the title page or elsewhere in the manuscript file (they can be keyed into the system and placed in a separate page in the cover letter file). The first page should include the manuscript title and an abstract of no more than 100 to 150 words. Number all manuscript pages, including the figures.
Illustrations: Illustrations submitted (line drawings, halftones, photos, photomicrographs, etc.) should be clean originals or digital files. Digital files are recommended for highest quality reproduction and should follow these guidelines:
-
300 dpi or higher
-
Sized to fit on journal page
-
EPS, TIFF, or PSD format only
-
Submitted as separate files, not embedded in text files
Color Reproduction: Color art will be reproduced in color in the online publication at no additional cost to the author. Color illustrations will also be considered for print publication; however, the author will be required to bear the full cost involved in color art reproduction. Please note that color reprints can only be ordered if print reproduction costs are paid. Print Rates: $900 for the first page of color; $450 per page for the next three pages of color. A custom quote will be provided for articles with more than four pages of color. Art not supplied at a minimum of 300 dpi will not be considered for print.
Permissions: Authors are responsible for all statements made in their work and for obtaining permission from copyright owners to use a lengthy quotation (500 words or more) or to reprint or adapt a table or figure published elsewhere. Authors should write to the original author(s) and publisher of such material to request nonexclusive world rights in all languages for use in the article and future editions. Provide copies of all permissions and credit lines obtained. As an author, you are required to secure permission if you want to reproduce any figure, table, or extract from the text of another source. This applies to direct reproduction as well as “derivative reproduction” (where you have created a new figure or table which derives substantially from a copyrighted source).
Proofs and Reprints: Page proofs are sent to the designated author using Taylor & Francis’ Central Article Tracking System (CATS). They must be carefully checked and returned within 48 hours of receipt. Reprints of individual articles are available for order at the time authors review page proofs. A discount on reprints is available to authors who order before print publication. Authors for whom we receive a valid email address will be provided an opportunity to purchase reprints of individual articles, or copies of the complete print issue. These authors will also be given complimentary access to their final article on Taylor & Francis Online .
