About the journal

The INFORMS Journal on Computing (JOC) is a quarterly that publishes papers in the intersection of operations research (OR) and computer science (CS).  Most papers contain original research, but we also welcome special papers in a variety of forms, including Feature Articles on timely topics, Expository Reviews making a comprehensive survey and evaluation of a subject area, and State-of-the-Art Reviews that collect and integrate recent streams of research.  All papers are refereed.
We take a very broad view of what constitutes the "the intersection of OR and CS."  Topics and formats include, but are not limited to:

  • OR is applied to a CS problem.  For example, queueing theory or simulation is used to help design a telecommunications system or a network of computers.

  • CS is applied to an OR problem.  For example, advanced data structures are used to improve an optimization or scheduling algorithm.

  • Results draw from both OR and CS.  For example, a new heuristic is used to accelerate a data-mining algorithm.

  • Results explore uncharted areas with the potential of advancing OR or CS and are in their intersection.

Instructions to Authors
  • Submission of a manuscript is representation that the paper has neither been published nor submitted for publication elsewhere, and that, if the work is officially sponsored, it has been released for open publication.  For papers that are accepted, the authors (or their employers -- whoever holds the copyright) will be required to fill out, sign, and send to the Editor-in-Chief the JOC Assignment of Copyright form transferring the copyright to INFORMS.  If there are multiple authors, only one author's signature is needed on the Assignment of Copyright form, and it may (preferably) be scanned and e-mailed to the Editor-in Chief, mailed as hardcopy to the Editor-in-Chief, or faxed (with a cover sheet) to the Editor-in-Chief.  As a condition of final acceptance of a paper for publication in the INFORMS Journal on Computing, the author(s) must indicate if their paper is posted on a working paper website, other than their own. They are responsible for assuring that, if any part of the paper has been copyrighted for prepublication as a working paper, the copyright can and will be transferred to INFORMS when the paper has been accepted. This includes both print and electronic forms of the paper. On acceptance, the text, or any link to full text, must be removed from working paper websites, other than the author's own website.

  • Authors should submit manuscripts directly to the appropriate Area Editor.  If there is question about which area is appropriate, papers may be submitted to the Editor-in-Chief, but it is preferable for authors to submit directly to an Area Editor.  Papers should not be submitted to Associate Editors.

  • Electronic submission is strongly encouraged, but authors should first check with the person to whom the submission will be sent to ensure compatibility of file types (e.g. PDF, PostScript, LaTeX, Word) and transmission mode (e.g., e-mail attachment with a particular encoding, anonymous FTP).  LaTeX is strongly preferred over office-type word-processing packages for preparation of manuscripts.  In the unlikely event that it is for some reason necessary to submit hardcopy, please send five copies of the manuscript and alert via e-mail the person to whom the submission is being made.  When a paper is accepted, authors are also asked to transmit the electronic file containing the text of the paper, as well as electronic or high-quality original hardcopy of any figures.

  • There is no a priori page limit for JOC, but conciseness and clarity of presentation are important. For Subject classifications and Other key words (which appear just before the abstract), consult the list at http://www.informs.org/Biblio/topics.html.

  • The logical style of the manuscript, including sectioning, figures, tables, mathematics, references, and appendix matter, is described in "Preparing Manuscripts for the INFORMS Journal on Computing", which is itself written in the appropriate style and can thus be used as an example.  This document is available in several alternative formats (all of which have the same information, content, and style).  Accepted papers must conform very closely to this style since the production process uses authors' files to create the actual journal paper; this includes details of references, sectioning, figures, tables, and layout of the first page.  Some specific points:

    • With respect to the References, it is very important that accepted papers conform exactly to our style, both in the References list at the end and at their point of citation in the text.  Authors also need to check that each entry in the References list at the end is cited in the text, and that each citation in the text has an entry in the References list.

    • In the References list at the end, please abbreviate names of journals, etc., in accordance with our list of Commonly Used Journal Abbreviations.

    • Do not use footnotes or endnotes, but rather work such material into the text itself.

    • If LaTeX is used, we ask for a single integrated LaTeX file, except for the file secdot.sty (available in the table below) and any external graphics files.

    • At present, we cannot accept color graphics.

    • Please check every web address in the paper to make sure that it works and is correct.
